Le Coucou New York Reviews from The Last Year
The review submitted by Alex F.
on 3/20/24 is bizarre and untrue. I dined at le coucou on 3/19/24 with my friend. We were seated in a corner alcove area where there were three 2 tops. Next to us (in the middle table) was a man and woman. to the far right of us was a man and another man. My friend and I had a great time. We enjoyed our meal, the food was unique and tasty, the service was hospitable, and the ambiance was impeccable. The only thing that marred our experience was the behavior of the man and woman sitting in the middle table. At the end of our meal we noticed them arguing with each other when the bill was produced. The man was angry with his arms crossed and the woman was angrily talking loudly. We noticed a server coming to check on the bill and the two patrons loudly and angrily argued with him. The server seemed apologetic and contrite. The manager came as well and spoke to the 2 of them. My friend and I came to understand that their credit card had been charged incorrectly. The manager said "I am sorry, we have fixed the issue, we are offering you assistance to fix the issue, and we are offering complimentary drinks." The man said "this is not a small issue and your solution is not enough for me." The manager said "what solution can I offer that you would be happier with?" The man said "that is not for me to say, it is for you to decide. But this is a huge issue that occurred." The man exclaimed that he would give le coucou a negative review. etc. The conversation persisted and the man and woman's loud angry behavior was a sour note on an otherwise delightful experience and meal. The manager seemed only professional and courteous. I highly doubt "Alex F" was another patron viewing this unfold. I am positive he is actually the unhappy diner himself. I am also sure he wanted his meal comped. Credit card companies are usually very good at righting incorrect charges. Moreover, the restaurant agreed the charge was incorrect. This didn't seem like a "huge issue" to us. His reaction seemed entirely disproportional to the situation and excessively angry.
Service and food was good, but the general manager is
Service and food was good, but the general manager is HORRIBLE! I've never witnessed anyone handle a situation so badly in hospitality industry. He brought the wrong bill to a table near us 4 times! And then he threatened to call the police on them because they were upset that he might have charged them multiple times. Never NEVER go to le coucou. They should be ashamed of themselves. Horrible horrible restaurant. Edit: To address the response from the general manager below: that is a very one sided portrayal of what I saw. I do not agree with the GM's characterization of his behavior. And at the end of the day the guest was pissed and it's the restaurants job to fix it and not escalate it. I've seen annoyed guests many times in NY, I haven't often seen it handled so badly. Please don't believe this dumb letter. He's even handling my complaints badly too. Litterally implied I'm lying and didn't even apologize to me for the scene. Please find somewhere else to spend your hard earned dollars.
Amazing restaurant, top notch service, excellent wine
Amazing restaurant, top notch service, excellent wine selection with quiete and intimate ambiance.
One of the best restaurants in town.
It's our favorite restaurant for celebrating birthdays and anniversaries It's elegant and superb with equally fine dining.
Le Coucou is a wonderful French restaurant in NYC.
Their impressive menu boasts lots of great flavors and textures. The service here is stellar and the ambiance is always classy. There are lots of fine dining options in the city but not all of them are worth the $$. This fine establishment, however, is worth every penny (and calorie).
French restaurant with beautiful atmosphere.
Great service, candlelight dinner. Limited food choices. Limited beef options. Many options are lacking in flavor. Butter used as substitute for flavor. Overall visit if on your bucket list, otherwise many better tasting choices in walking distance. Bob appetit.
Great food.
Great service. Pricey, but so good! Our waiter brought us the most incredible bottle of wine which was delicious with our food. Ambiance is very nice as well.
We absolutely loved our dinner at Le Coucou last night.
The service was impeccable - very attentive and great recommendations. The space itself is beautiful and each table had a long stemmed candle. The food was French perfection - I don't think you could go wrong with a dish but I wouldn't miss the sweetbreads.
this place is very warm and welcoming, but as for the food
this place is very warm and welcoming, but as for the food ,i was very disappointed as it is flavorless and portion are very greedy for the price for a non Michelin star restaurant,i have been to the most famous Starr group places and had a blast with the food ,but Coucou is not deserving this success
A refined experience
A lovely restaurant close to Soho in lower Manhattan. Refined cuisine, great decor, nice tables with candles and tablecoths. That is a must in a Michelin star establishment, Very good service, perfect wine recommendations. The view of the kitchen is fun
Gorgeous dining room and elegant service are the two
Gorgeous dining room and elegant service are the two strongest elements of this fine dining establishment. The food is traditionally French and beautifully presented. A perfect place for a special occasion or date night. We enjoyed our meals and topped off dessert with an espresso martini. I have recommended this place to others and their experiences were similar to ours.
Big reputation
I have mixed feelings about this place. On the positive side it’s an impressive room with a really buzzy atmosphere. The food style is very very French. Big portions of rich food with a price to match. Now I’ve tried to be fair here and put some of my issue down to me. Had been eating quite lightly during this NYC visit. Lots of sushi and Asian food. As a result I really struggled to eat the food. I didn’t really enjoy it. I’ve realised how little I eat this kind of food any more. It feels quite dated. Kept waiting for our table but once seated service good. Main fault of this place is the entrance. We arrived early with a view of having a nice cocktail pre dinner. Unfortunately the two chairs by the front door is the bar. There is a tiny over engineered cocktail list. They only have the ingredients to make those cocktails so a Bellini or vodka martini is out of the question Aparantly. It’s more of a holding area than a bar really so arrive slightly late having had a drink elsewhere because nearly everybody has to wait for their table.
Pretty food that evidently no one tasted in the kitchen; All show and almost no substance.
I'm sorry to say that I found this to be a very disappointing meal - both in terms of the food and the service. It was my birthday, and my husband and I were in the city for work and pleasure. We decided to go here Saturday night to celebrate my birthday proper. Bottom line: I would never return, and I've told others (who commented on how pretty the restaurant looked from my few instagram posts) not to come here either. First, the good - it's a beautiful restaurant. The bar is lovely and the restaurant as a whole is well decorated. Honestly, it was one of the most aesthetically appealing restaurants I've ever been to. And the cocktails and wine menu are very good. So bravo on all that. Now, the bad - I think the easiest way to describe the experience is that this is a restaurant that strives to serve fine French cuisine without actually having ever eaten (or eaten often enough) good French cooking. True, the dishes looked like dishes one would eat in France but "looks" was where it stopped. It was like what someone thinks French food should be without actually tasting any of the food. We started with a few of the small plates. They were mostly good - the oysters and the yellowfin tuna. The yellowfin tuna was well done. Solid. But the oysters were sitting in so much camembert that you really couldn't taste anything else. It was essentially oysters Rockefeller with a ton of camembert. Then we ordered the chicken and foie gras as a next course. This was good. No complaints. Not amazing, but perfectly fine. We then moved on to the lobster dish. It was delicious but honestly it was just steamed lobster in a butter sauce. You can't really screw that up. Very good but not because of any real preparation. Things really went down hill with the duck. We ordered the Canette a l’orange (for two) at $129. This was a good example of a restaurant trying to be French (essentially, to make duck a l'orange) and making it look pretty on the plate but evidently never taking a bite to realize that it's bad. First there was a duck breast - so incredibly chewy from being cooked poorly. Also, it was very gamey. Now, of course, duck is a gamey meat. This is true. But a well-prepared duck breast will be paired with sauces and other accompaniments that blunt the gamey taste or weave together the gamey taste with other flavors that make it delicious. No such thing here. There was a very weak orange sauce and a cute little peeled orange on the side. That was the extent of the effort. Then, this was followed by a skillet with two of the duck quarters, set amid endives of various preparations. None of this worked. The duck was whatever (fine, not great) and the endives were so incredibly bitter. The duck and the bitter did not work together. Maybe they could have with a more skillful chef but this wasn't it. But, it looked beautiful in the skillet - again, pretty food that evidently no one tasted. We ordered two desserts (the caramel sabayon and another one that I can't even remember). The caramel sabayon was fine. Nothing to write home about, but competently done. The other dessert was forgettable. As my husband and I were talking about the meal at the end, the head waiter saw us and walked over to take our plates and ask how things were. I couldn't help myself, so I shared with him some of my observations. He seemed baffled...not that he was surprised that I had negative remarks but more that I had remarks at all. He didn't seem to know at all how to respond. As an aside, our own waiter also wasn't very helpful. For example, at the beginning of the meal we asked him if there was anything in particular that he would recommend on the menu. His response (I kid you not): "I never recommend anything. It all depends on the kind of experience you want to have. Some of these dishes are very French while some are more general crowd pleasers)." I almost had to laugh but just politely thanked him. For two people and for all these dishes and booze, it was not worth $680. This place is all show. Michelin really needs to revisit this selection.
Best in NYC
This restaurant exceed expectations, great staff food was fantastic, will go back when traveling to NYC.
Beautiful restaurant! Where is the food??
Without doubt, a beautiful restaurant with stunning lighting. Nevertheless, we were disappointed with the food. Incredibly tiny portions and rather boring side dishes. Prices were very high for such meager offerings. I am 95 lbs , not a big eater, but I was hungry when we left. Professional service, yet aloof and distant reception. Once is enough.
Good rather than great
Great food & a very extensive & expensive wine list . Slightly snotty ambience . I wasn’t allowed to go to my table until the whole table arrived . I enjoyed the meal & probably would try it again but compared to Michelin starred restaurants in London this place fell a little short. The prices were so much higher than better London restaurants. Other than the guy on entry the service was super friendly. It had been recommended to me so I probably had too high expectations. A good rather than a great experience
Incredible Experience and Night at Le CouCou
Anybody fortunate enough to get a table here will tell you the same thing: The food is amazing and the service is beyond the 1 Star Michelin they have been given. Truly an experience worth every moment we were there!!!!!
Outstanding Meal in NYC
Outstanding - staff were lovely & food was exceptional. Don't be afraid to try the classic French dishes. Make sure to get the beef tartare - a revelation.
Pre-Michelin was a better experience
We loved our 2018 experience before they got their Michelin star. Disappointed with food quality and average service. The Mediterranean inspired gazpacho entree was overly sour but the 2 pcs of tempura shrimp saved the dish. The sea bass seemed to have been marinated in salt too long. I had to drink 5 glasses of water lest it killed my kidneys. The halibut with beurre blanc was well seasoned, neither salty nor bland. The foie gras terrine was so-so, wouldn’t order it again. The decoration on the halibut was a half dead lettuce leaf! Limp and sad. If they placed a sprig of parsley or anything fresh, it would’ve looked more appetising. Bread side was seaweed (couldn’t taste the umami seaweed) and another forgettable one. In 2018, their bread was delicious, with walnuts and olive oil. Waitstaff back in 2018 was impeccable. This time it was average except for one, Nina, who was very attentive and asked if we wanted additional bread. I was hoping to make Le Coucou a place to keep returning but pre-Michelin experience was much better.
