When the DC 2020 Michelin list was published, we were very curious about Little Pearl. A $49.00 tasting menu with a Michelin star?
Ridiculous. How is it possible?
While I have a better understanding how it is possible after eating there, it is still very impressive a laudable accomplishment.
For those not willing to shell out for Komi, Plume, or Metier prices, we believe Little Pearl is worthy of a Michelin star after evaluating our usual three-legged stool criteria of service, food, and price.
Service is relaxed, informal – youthful, if you will. But it is definitely attentive and competent. For example, we expressed a minor concern about the temperature, and it was quickly resolved. Furthermore, staff checked back a couple of times to ensure we remained comfortable. This is the mark of a high-quality product. The staff read the notes in our reservation about the lactose allergy and were aware throughout the meal without prompting by us. Water glasses stayed full, clean plates and utensils were promptly replaced between courses, and clear explanations of the wine and food with clear interest, instead of stagnant boredom like at Masseira (a much more expensive Michelin one-star option). Little Pearl voluntarily split a single wine pairing into two glasses. The Inn at Little Washington (Three Michelin Stars) can’t/won’t do this, and we’ve been there half a dozen times. If you can look beyond the Urban Outfitter attire of many of the staff, you will clearly see a quality product. To be fair, there were a couple of hiccups of the lactose free dish initially served to the wrong person. However, since the explanations were so clear, the mistake was obvious and easily correctable. Plus, at this price point, you have to give a little leeway.
For the food, we really wondered if we would leave starving given the low price. Granted, neither of us were entirely full (but we are both big eaters), but we were not hungry either. The portions were civilized, even if a little light. I give a great deal of credit for the quality and creativeness.
We received five courses, a palette cleanser, and dessert. Our first course was certainly creative. Meringue constructed to look like an egg with more traditional devilled egg fillings on top. It was a nice surprise to begin and was just the right amount of gimmickry we need in a meal. The next course was a baguette with butter with some roe mixed in. This helped give a little body and filling to the menu and was an adeate nod to the savory to move into the next course. I really enjoyed the scallops, pickled vegetables and crème. It was a great blending of tastes and the scallops were very fresh tasting. Next, we had a cabbage spring roll, which once again, was extremely harmonious with the right texture and frankly delicious. The main course was pork belly and potato salad. The quality was first rate and once again…the chef is acutely aware of the harmony of texture verified through multiple courses.
The lactose-free dessert was a coconut milk/flavored frozen dessert. It was creamy, tasty, and natural. The other dessert was a chocolate ganache and gelato enhanced with truffles. The truffles were (once again) very well balanced to perfectly enhance the flavors.
We had the standard wine pairing offered (I believe called off the beaten path with another more expensive option). All of the wine was fine and competently paired with the courses. For the low price of $39.00, it definitely did the job and then some to enhance each course. Plus, the wines were unusual enough that it made for some good conversation during the meal. The dessert pairing was a cocktail of brandy, amaro, and honey. I loved the taste of this cocktail. It was a good closer, but given my affinity for Campari, I could have just as easily enjoyed this cocktail as an aperitif instead of a digestif.
The total price for two tasting menus, one standard wine pairing, tax, and a 26% tip was $190.00. Frankly, this was a great value.
However, keep a few points in mind: (1) If you are big eaters like us you likely will not leave completely full. (2) The staff are overall great and competent, but it is not always as polished as some more expensive alternatives (of course a lot of the more expensive alternatives are noticeably less competent), and (3) the quality of the food is quite good, but with a $49 tasting menu there are noticeable cost cutting measures-- dont expect duck, foie gras, or roasted lamb.
I’m not being critical. On the contrary, we were very impressed such a high-quality product could you be offered at such an economical price. I just want other diners to walk in with the right perspective and expectations.
This is really a great value and worth the effort to secure a reservation to try for yourself. Bon Appetit!
