My husband and I were very much looking forward to our dinner here this evening, I having lived in KL for a few years and he being born and raised in Malaysia. I knew to check my expectations. One cannot expect exact replication from a far-off land due to the availability of exact ingredients and expertly trained staff. However, the execution tonight was poor. We were greeted by hurried door staff who were not rude, but not pleasant. Our only option was to sit at the bar. I was happy too, but my husband questioned why we were not seated at one of the many opened tables, inside or out. Possibly staffing shortages? It was not explained nor did we ask. The bar server was quick to assist and asked if we needed help with the menu, we did not [our mistake]. The plain roti was brought first. What was served was a roti drenched in butter. Had we asked for a roti bomb and they added sugar to this dish it would have been perfect, but for plain roti, it had far too much butter, no flavor of the bread could come thru. The Satay was very good. The peanut sauce was not what I was used to, but it went very well with the chicken. This was the best dish of the night. For the main course, we both ordered Pan Mee. I knew it would be spicy. In tonight's dish, we suspected they used too much of the oil from the chill oil pot. My mouth was so hot I had to ask for milk, which they did not have to serve. My husband's eyes were red and tearing. He was able to eat 75% of his. I only 25% of mine. I then ordered the coconut and pandan rice as a side hoping it would help absorb the chili oil. The flavor was fine, I could not taste any pandan. I suspect this should be expected because we cannot get pandan leaves here in the US and they must have used extract. We boxed the leftovers and brought them home hoping we can find a way to serve them for lunch tomorrow. Oh, the pulled tea with milk. It was actually the first thing served to us. We ordered it hot. It is close to authentic. We surmised that this restaurant uses evaporated milk and not condensed milk because the sweetness was lacking. When the bill came I was surprised to see a 22% service fee added. I thought it, well presumptuous to demand a tip. The tipping amount is for the customer to decide. I would have not given this amount of my own accord. I think 18% would have been my choice. As far as the service, once our server took our order, we did not see her again until we had to waiver her down for additional drinks, the ordering of the coconut and panda rice, the boxes to go, and the check. I don't know if she was afraid I was going to be upset over the fire in the bowl that was served to us or if that was her usual skill set. $99.18 for an incorrectly prepared meal and minimal service that included a forced 22% tip/service fee leads me to think that we may try this location again, but I won't be suggesting it. If my husband wants round two we will go. I am left...unimpressed.
