We have been eating at Merriman's Maui since 1986 (when it was called The Bay Club). We've never had a bad meal there, but last night's meal came close. I must start with the fact that they now charge $120 p/p prix fixe. I know that this Hawaii, food is expensive, etc., but that is a lot of money. We made our reservation knowing that. For that price, I think that it is reasonable to expect superb food and service. As usual, the food was quite good (with one caveat that I'll detail below. However, the service was not as expected, and not what we have experienced in the past. We waited a considerable period for our waitress to come to our table after being seated. After that, the service flowed well through the first two (of three) courses (which tasted quite good). We then waited far too long for our main course to be served. My lamb shank, which was done well and tasted good, was only lukewarm on the outside, although it was warmer on the inside. It makes me suspect that it was sitting on a counter in the kitchen for a while, although I don't know this. I would have sent it back to the kitchen (something that I very rarely do) if we hadn't already waited so long. Our waitress was very apologetic and referred to a staffing problem in the kitchen. We hope that was the problem and that it will be rectified. Again, when you are being charged prices that are close to a three-star restaurant in NYC, it is reasonable to expect the restaurant to function well at all levels.
