Poor quality meat. Very expensive.
I have been going to Mildred's for over twenty years, but never again. The $43 pris fixed menu featured an appetizer, entree and desert. I didn't want an appetizer or desert and paid much more just for an entree! I should have gotten the fixed price deal and thrown away the appetizer and desert. My NY Strip was very tough and fatty. Most was wasted. I had a coke, while my guests had one glass of ordinary house wine. After adding the nonsensical 12% just because we can "service charge" plus tip, the total was over $250. Gainesville is a cheap university town, but I've never felt so ripped off in my life. I used to like Mildreds, but I'll never go again.
Be the first to ReplyBest, fantastic, loved it ...
First class, like the very best home cooked food (only better). They were fileting a whole snapper in back which we had the good fortune to eat. Great servers, wine list, everything, these people are not messing around !! Certainly one of the best in town.

I really like this place - it's fancy but not pretentious. I've enjoyed everything I've had there - feels like comfort food made with really good ingredients. highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyWe loved the food and the service
We arrived at Mildred's BIg City Food at 8 PM after a long day of travel. The host seated us without a problem. The food was wonderful as was the service.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and service. The 3 course dinner is a terrific idea and worth it! I had the lamb neck.
Wonderful choice of food. I had a very unusual and tasty lamb neck with a side dish that wasnโt very good . Caesar salad and dessert of chocolate peanut butter cheesecake were excellent! Great service!

My wife and I had dinner recently at Mildred's. Their specialty is a three-course meal. I decided to be adventurous and order the carrot & cardamom bisque as my appetizer while my wife stuck to the Florida tomato salad. Hers was very good, while mine was amazing, in both the presentation and the flavors. For entrees, she ordered the braised lamb and I ordered the mousse of scallop en planche. Both were excellent, with the lamb fully cooked, tender, and tasty. My scallop dish was offbeat, but delicious. I recommend getting the rouille on the side (as I did) as it could easily overwhelm the seafood. The third course was dessert from their excellent selection. We plan on returning soon.

The manager, Claudine, was working all ends but found time to say hello, as we sat at the bar on a busy night. Try the Caesar Salad, crisp with tiny crunchy croutons. The Hen dish and N.Y. Strip Steak were perfectly portioned and not overly sauced. This is highly recommended as the best food in Gainesville.

Menu always showcases best of local ingredients. Great slightly upscale option for families visiting students at U of F. Reasonable wine list and intriguing cocktails. And those homemade desserts are simply superb. Go to experience great local cooking.
Be the first to ReplyLUNCH for the College Elite
Passing through Gainesville we searched from the car for an upscale lunch spot. Not to far off our path we went to Mildred's Big City Food. My wife had the daily salad special and a cup of Black Bean Soup. She like her salad which had beets, chicken, Blue Cheese crumbles, and mixture of greens. The Soup had diced onions which wasn't a favorite item. Still the focaccia bread was a nice touch. My Buffalo Crisp Chicken Salad was good. I did think the dressing was a bit skimpy, so I had to ask for more dressing. Over all it's a nice clean place and I wouldn't hesitate and I would go again.
Be the first to ReplyGreat gem of a fine restaurant in Gainesville
Food is fantastic, the wait staff is incredible, and overall, the experience is very enjoyable. There's simply not a better restaurant in Gainesville. Mildred's delivers the best quality dinner you can get in town.
Be the first to ReplyMany years ago top restaurant , times have changed
In town for football game- Mildredโs was alswsys known as a top place to dine in Gainesville. As soon as we entered it felt like this was a completely different place. hostess who appeared like college aged student waited on us. Had several courses and all were terrible- fish was horrendous. even the dessert which Mildredโs was always known for was barely edible. empty on weekend night.. If you used to go to Mildredโs many years ago beware the place has changed quite a bit.
Be the first to ReplyTired Looking but Good Food
I hadn't dined here in a few years, and since my last experience was so so, I wasn't expecting much. The restaurant looks the same, if a bit tired looking. But the food and the service was excellent. Our table ordered the hangar steak and the snapper and both entrees were delicious. The onion soup was very good too. Perhaps last time I was there was just a bad night, as the dining room was busy for a weeknight.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and staff
The food was rich but excellent, the staff were very pleasant and the cocktails were very good. Itโs somewhat lacking in atmosphere, the lighting in particular is not great. Still we had a lovely evening and left happy.

My husband and I were in Gainesville with friends and decided to go out to eat the last minute. We were very glad we found Mildred's in a strip mall. We went into the restaurant and it looked like, "oh, no, doesn't look so good - it looked like a diner out in the back woods. Well, it was wonderful, The halibut and scallop dinner was very fresh, (to our surprise) pork chop huge and the steak excellent. The service was fun, wine list good and overall, it was very good. We found out after dinner from the server that Mildred's had another side that was more formal, tablecloths - the whole deal - with the same menu. The side we went on, also had a menu with burgers and pizza. We went to look at the other side and it was very nice. We'll go next time if we're in Gainesville. But, our food and all was very good.

Stopped in for a weekday lunch. You order at a counter...there are daily specials as well as menu items.....you are given a number, find a seat and food is delivered, promptly, to your table. Food was good and fresh. Noise level astronomical.
The Gill family has 2 other venues in Gainesville and they are all worth a visit.
Hard To Find
Visiting Gainsville over a long holiday weekend, we turned to Trip Advisor for a recommendation for dinner. We chose Mildred's for our Friday night meal. It was a challenge to find; the entrance is on the side of the building with another restaurant facing the street front. Once inside, it was nearly empty at 8pm. I ordered the pork chop thinking it was going to be one maybe two thin flavorful chops but to my surprise it was a huge pork loin steak! Tasty and satisfying but far different than I had imagined and far larger than one could consume at a single sitting. Entree and soup came to $35 The experience was pleasant but with a dimly lighted restaurant nearly empty it was a rather uncomfortable setting. Perhaps next time will be different at an earlier hour.
