Moody Tongue Sushi New York Reviews from The Last Year
I want to be nice because the staff was so sweet and
I want to be nice because the staff was so sweet and helpful but my allegiance is to the potential diner. The food was ok- nothing was "bad" but what I had was just "ok". This is not "good sushi", it is decent food. Sushi I have had at $95 fifteen course one hour sushi bars is tastier and more varied. My daughter enjoyed the vegan omakase but says she had better for half the price elsewhere . The rice had so much vinegar that I couldn't taste the crab in one of my rolls. The other roll had scallop but again the other ingredients so overpowered it that the scallop which accounts for most of the cost of the roll was untastible. The cost was not justified by what we had IMO. Vegan Omakase with beer pairing, forgetable gyoza and two rolls, one bottle of sparkiling water and an individual (delicious) beer came to $350 all in. At half that it would have been slightly expensive but this cost is totally out of proportion to the quality of the food. I think this company makes wonderfull beer and should offer it with a different menu of food. Burgers would be great or if they want to stick with sushi there needs to be a MAJOR upgrade in sushi quality and execution . As I've said the staff was friendly and professional but the menus they gave us were "outdated" and most of the actual offerings differed from the menu. They did not explain this until I started to order things on the menu only to be told they were unavailable or were now offered in a significantly altered form. This is bizzare and shoddy. Why not get a chalkboard and display the ACTUAL menus offerings so diners can peruse it and think their choices through instead of being thrown off balance and rethinking while taking in verbal descriptions of replacements and differences from the written menu ( which is there WHY?!) ? Oh, yes I was asked about allergies and related that I have a dairy allergy yet I was offered on three occasions (a total of 5 items) that were very obviously milk based. Sure they apologized each time I pointed it out but as we were the only two people in the resturant one would have hoped this was not too much to keep in mind. Come to think of it strike the proffessional comment.
Love this place, great beer, amazing eats and friendly
Love this place, great beer, amazing eats and friendly staff. If you're planning on going keep in mind it's a small space, making a reservation in advance is recommended
We were really looking forward to eating here and left
We were really looking forward to eating here and left quite disappointed. We've been trying all the different omakase places in the city which have been fantastic and this one was did not compare at all. Got the Brewmaster's tasting menu which includes the beer pairing. Did not live up to the hype. Wish we spent our money elsewhere.
Fabulous experience.
Can't say enough about it. Food and drink almost perfect. Couple of small nits (hamachi roll with bell pepper was a bit heavy, salad had a bit too much dressing) but small nits to pick in the grand scheme of what a great experience the rest of it was.
Extra star for great service, but I can't recommend.
Probably the worst quality sushi in Manhattan that you can get at this price point. Pacing was also pretty slow. I did love the beer pairings, but you're mainly paying for sushi and it isn't up to par here. Fish is fresh but not flavorful and I think they use normal rice instead of sushi rice which is really noticeable
SUCH a fun night! The staff were super friendly and kind!
SUCH a fun night! The staff were super friendly and kind! My friend and I both got the omakase with the beer pairings. Beer pairings! How long have I waited for that, beer affecioando that I am? Everyone else does wine or sake, but these guys have an in-house brewery with beers made especially. Fab! We sat outside on a beautiful evening and enjoyed the food, the service, the people watching... it was all great! Definite recommend!
This is hands down, my favorite restaurant in New York.
Life has simply been much better since discovering it. The sushi is some of the best quality fish that I've ever had. The ginger salmon and tuna hand roll is my go-to order. The atmosphere is always a vibe (great date spot). The presentation is always fantastic. And the staff makes every meal feel like home. Daniela goes out of her way to make sure I have an amazing meal every time and the rest of the staff is always so nice and accommodating. Shout out to Max, Anna and the entire staff. If you like great sushi, good drinks and amazing service look no further this is your spot.
Delicious and fresh sushi, unique and interesting drink
Delicious and fresh sushi, unique and interesting drink menu, cozy ambiance with fun music at an appropriate volume (not too loud!) Heated toilet seats lol. Overall amazing experience!
Need a top notch tasting experience in the West Village?
Need a top notch tasting experience in the West Village? You found it! Service was tailored to your every need, and special requests were easily granted. My Wife and I enjoyed the 15 course with Beer Tasting. Every dish was superb and super fresh. Our host Bix was phenomenal, and made our night one to remember!
DONT COME HERE.
I have never left a review before and felt necessary to do so now. Food was mediocre but service was absolutely horrific and not what you would expect from a high end omakase spot... came with three girlfriends to celebrate the holidays. The place was almost entirely empty on a Sunday evening. After we spent over $1k and graciously tipped, a server we had not seen before came over telling us to be quiet. We were flabbergasted. We approached the hostess stand prior to leaving to ask what happened and that same server insulted us all. When asked to speak to a manager she claimed to be one though it was blatantly obvious she did not hold that title. Her colleague eventually gave us the name of the actual manager who was not the rude woman speaking to us (Daniella). That woman is very clearly unhappy to be working in hospitality and should find a job that is not client facing. There are so many incredible omakase spots in the city and unfortunately Daniella made the entire experience horrible. Would not waste your money here. There are so many other places that exceed this horrible level of service and quality of food.
A very fun and unique spot! I've never seen a sushi/beer
A very fun and unique spot! I've never seen a sushi/beer pairing, and the beer was excellent! The sushi was good, but some of the flavors overpowered the fish and for that reason, I might choose a different spot in the future. The bar was lovely though!
Something off about this place.
Food wasn't bad - but extremely expensive, and they also asked for a Chef's Tip in addition to a Service Tip with the check which might be illegal and certainly wasn't cool. Service was weird- people asking to clear plates with food still on them. Seats a little uncomfortable. Environment oddly inauthentic. It gave us the creeps a bit.

I had dinner at Moody Tongue Sushi with my daughter and a few cousins, about a year and a half after enjoying a terrific dinner at Moody Tongue in Chicago with one of those cousins. While Moody Tongue in Chicago has two Michelin stars and Moody Tongue Sushi just opened last spring, my cousin and I both agree that we prefer Moody Tongue Sushi's sushi tasting menu in New York City. Sorry, Chicago. The restaurant space itself is simple, clean and rustic, but small, especially compared to the expansive space of the Chicago restaurant, which also houses the brewery. The service was terrific. We learned that the general manager wasn't present, but the assistant general manager is amazing. When we asked whether a copy of the tasting menu were available, she told us that it was not, but then hand wrote it for us while consulting with the chef. Thank you! A very nice thing about Moody Tongue Sushi's tasting menu is that the entire table doesn't have to order it. My daughter was stuffed from four days of gorging in Manhattan, and one of my cousins is battling cancer and avoids raw fish, so, for them, being able to opt out of the tasting menu was ideal. However, my Chicago-dining cousin and I went for it, with the beer pairings, too, of course. Interestingly, the beers are all brewed in and shipped from Chicago. They would truly serve as courses on their own, each having different appearances, tastes and textures. The whole concept of pairing different beers with different courses of food in a tasting menu format is absolutely delicious and absolutely genius. The food was largely nigiri sushi and the fish was all excellent. The only course that wasn't ideal was the dish with two gunkan. At least one had too much Kewpie mayo in it that overwhelmed the fish. Fortunately, I love Kewpie mayo, but sea scallop and king crab taste better with less than more. Another very nice thing about Moody Tongue Sushi is that it saves seats for walk-ins. I guess that's a New York City good neighbor kind of thing to do. I see Michelin stars in Moody Tongue Sushi's future and look forward to dropping in for another meal the next time that I'm in the neighborhood.
The best sushi!!! High quality sushi with a great vibe.
The cocktails and sushi-beer pairings are on point. The nigiri pieces melt in your mouth. Waitstaff are all incredibly friendly. They tell you where each fish is sourced and help curate your meal. Do not skip the dessert!! The Strawberry Shortcake was incredible. 10/10 definitely going to be a regular here.
Did the tasting menu with beer pairings.
Yikes, I don't know. The beers were good and plentiful so that part was enjoyable. The sushi though, simply not good and like another review says, ranks low in this city full of fantastic sushi options. They were all off in terms of flavor (too sweet, too bitter, etc) and totally masking the fish itself. It was rare to be able to taste the fish while covered so heavily in the seasonings and accoutrements. The place is nice though and the service was ok. Might go back for beers and such but would definitely skip the sushi.

Good question. Currently the bidder will have to include the prepaid dinner price plus bid to secure the reservation. AT is currently working on an upcoming release where the prepaid amount and the bid amount are two separate transactions. Happy Bidding!
