Wonderful stay, great food and lovely staff.
A lovely stay, made even more special by such skilled, friendly staff. For the past few years we’ve been travelling over an 8 hour round trip to stay at Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons because we didn’t know that this wonderful place, Moor Hall was almost on our doorstep! Only 20 miles away from our home is the gem which is Moor Hall. Mark seems such an unassuming, humble guy but my goodness, he and his team produce some of the best food we’ve ever eaten. We loved the sweet and savoury gougère served as a small afternoon tea. The canapés before dinner were a delight, every mouthful just delicious. We are pescatarians & our menu was well thought out & was perfect, perfect portion size, perfectly seasoned & one can see why Mark has 2 Michelin stars. The dishes were fresh & exciting and we can’t wait to return. Even the breakfast was delicious, a set meal consisting of yoghurt & fruit compôte, salmon with a dill sauce & perfectly cooked oeufs poché florentine served on a crumpet. We stayed in the Bilberry Room which was a well appointed room with a beautiful bathroom. Beautiful smelling bathroom products too from Pure Lakes. Every member of staff we spoke to was welcoming, knowledgeable and looked happy to be in such a lovely work environment. Thanks to all for a fabulous stay, still can’t believe we didn’t know this wonderful place was so close to home but we do now!

Really special experience. We have dined at quite a few Michelin stared restaurants but this is probably our favourite. it is intimate, the lounge aperitifs before dinner are lovely and being shown the kitchen is a nice touch. It was relaxing, the room was huge and well appointed (Damson Suite), the staff very attentive and the food was excellent. It was a lovely stay from start to finish and breakfast was great too. Don't hesitate to book, you won't be disappointed. My only tiny gripe is that there were no slippers in the room and there was no lattes or cappucinos available at breakfast but these are only extremely minor details. The other thing, which was not Moor Halls fault is that we could could hear really loud music when we went to bad which lasted till 4am. I did call reception who said they were aware of it and it was coming from a neighbouring property. My husbanded commented "if i wanted to come to an 18-30 I would have booked it!" This was probably a one off and like I say did not ruin our stay which was amazing in every other way.

From arriving to leaving what an amazing experience the food is absolutely delicious. Tasting menu in the 2 Michelin Star restaurant to dinner in the 1 Michelin star Barn restaurant could not fault anything, the staff are so attentive without being intrusive and knowledgeable. Absolutely incredible, thank you for a wonderful culinary experience.

We are fortunate to only live about 30 minutes from Moor Hall, and have had the pleasure of eating/staying here a few times since it first opened. However it has been a few years since our last visit, so felt a review was in order. The grounds and the buildings themselves are immaculately maintained. All the staff we encountered from the moment we checked in until we left were friendly, helpful and you could see and hear the pride they had for the place when talking to them. Chef patron Mark Birchall is the most unassuming, humble and quiet person you could meet. Yet his vision for this place and the culinary expertise of him and the whole kitchen brigade under his guidance, is astounding. They deserve every 1 of the 3 stars they have accumulated between Moor Hall and The Barn. The food, and it feels derogatory calling it that as it’s so much more, is course after course of visual delights and explosions of flavour on your tongue - paired with amazing and sometimes quirky wines. Service was excellent. Nice touch having a little stool for ladies bags to sit on and keep them away from the floor. We have stayed in 4 different rooms there, and none of them disappoint. Mulberry is the biggest, and this time we stayed in Rosehip, which was also very spacious. Lovely freestanding bathtub and separate roomy shower. The bed was so comfortable and there were 2 big squidgy chairs to sink into, as well as a mini fridge with a selection of drinks and fresh milk for your tea/coffee. Breakfast is also a set menu, but of course if you let them know of any dietary requirements in advance, they will accommodate. It’s somewhere you would go for a special occasion. On the pricey side yes…but once you experience it, you come away thinking it was well worth it. Nowhere else, except perhaps Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir, even compares. Book it - you won’t be sorry!

This is not about the restaurant which I have reviewed separately. Stayed one night in the Damson suite . Expensive. Big room though decor not to my taste. Main issue was I spent six hours in Southport A&E after missing my step on the step in the room. Manager helpful in sorting the initial problem but surprised that no one in the restaurant at breakfast knew we had spent most of the night elsewhere. Note also the breakfast is set so if you have a pescatarian evening meal you get a pescatarian breakfast.

We stayed as a birthday treat and it was first class from start to finish. we had one of the lodge rooms which was v comfortable, especially the bed. Pre-dinner drinks and canapes (excellent) were served in the bar, we then had a tour of the kitchen garden on the way to dinner which was a superb experience, we opted for the matching wines which were well paired. The food wines and service were some of the best that we have experienced anywhere. You can understand why the restaurant and chefs get so many richly deserved accolades. The breakfast was also brilliant. You do get what you pay for and we will return.

Love the sleep quality of this incredible place. Very spacious car park - with electric charging points, walk through the most amazing walled garden that is like a scene from Alice in Wonderland passing the most amazing and modern looking kitchen that has carefully been grafted on to this incredible historic building - reception is a breeze then you are led to your room - each one the Ames slightly different but all amazingly spacious. With its extra large amazingly comfy bed - your guaranteed a peaceful night. Breakfast as you can imagine is the most incredible event. Course after course of delicious treats to navigate. Our favourite breakfast of all. As if this isn’t enough - you are gifted a small box of pastries for the journey home - just as a reminder of the evening before. Just perfect
Be the first to ReplyMoor Hall - a treat!
Had a great evening at the Barn - a treat to celebrate husband’s birthday. It’s not cheap but we found it exceptional value for food of this quality - 3 courses and 3 unexpected amuse-bouches for £48. We’ve paid as much for far less remarkable food! Service was excellent and pitched perfectly. Professional and personable without being too stuffy or fussy! Rob and Laura gave a masterclass in the art of getting this right. Thanks to all for a memorable evening.

A treat for my Daughter's 18th birthday and what a treat it was. The welcome was lovely, drinks and snacks in the lounge (the snacks were superb) followed by a look at the kitchen. Every course was delicious, obviously beautifully presented but also came with a story on sourcing and inspiration. Certainly not an everyday experience (at that price!) but a very special occasion venue.

Thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of our one night stay here. The tasting menu was outstanding, staff delightful. Decor in the restaurant was lovely. Our bedroom was beautiful. We enjoyed strolling round the grounds and the beautiful view of the lake from our room. Cannot wait to visit again. Surely a third star will soon be awarded. A gorgeous breakfast compled a wonderful experience. A faultless experience.

We had dined at Moor hall before and also at The Barn. This time we booked the package to stay and dine with breakfast the following morning The whole experience was sublime from start to finish. We arrived and looked at the garden and greenhouses where micro herbs were being nurtured for the kitchen. Winter vegetables were coming ready to pick and bed ready for spring planting. We checked in and we’re Shown to our room which is much better than we expected. Huge and luxurious with a gigantic bathroom with Moor hall toiletries. Bed huge and comfortable and all so luxurious We were offered tea and homemade cake in the lounge from4pm which was complimentary and a lovely touch. Needles to say we had gin instead ! Dinner started in the bar where several tasting snacks prepared us for the delight to follow. We especially like how we were taken into the open kitchen where Mark Birchall was overseeing his brigade of chefs. They explained each section and what was happening and we also had a further delicate snack here before being show to our table. Dinner was expected, sublime with a skilfully balanced offering of seasonal food cooked, presented and served with 2 Michelin Star flair. It was all simply stunning and faultless from start to finish Our last treat was served back in the lounge the bar with a nightcap After a very comfortable night’s sleep, breakfast was equally as stunning with homemade pasties and bread with a selection of preserves, delicious smoked salmon and thin rye bread and dill Creme fraiche. A skillet of hot sausage, bacon and the best black pudding was accompanied by a free range soft boiled egg. The whole experience was a triumph of British hospitality at its finest Thank you, we’re are looking forward to returning to do this all over again

Myself and my husband had the lunchtime tasting menu. It was the most amazing experience. From start to finish the service was absolutely seamless. Each course was exceptional in flavour and presentation. The sommelier went above and beyond in his explanation of the wines and the teas and infusions. It was an absolute delight to be served by somebody with such passion for his profession. I can’t recommend this restaurant enough.

Second visit this time with family. Supremely attentive service coupled with high quality food and wine. The setting is also superb making it well worth its status as one of the best resturants in the region.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Service and the food looks wonderful, but someone forgot to add any flavour
Took the eight course tasting menu at Moor Hall with an overnight stay. Staff could not be more welcoming and attentive and the Hall and grounds are amazing - a drink in the garden on a summer's day would be heaven. Unfortunately, the food (the tasting menu) was a complete let down. The eight courses are in fact about 12 or 13 (we lost count) when you add in all the pre- and post dinner add-ons. The food just keeps coming and in the end we were just willing it to end. Scallop and turbot courses were bland, tasteless white fish. I left the venison course untouched - if meat is going to be cooked rare then I don't expect to have to hack through it with a steak knife. And what is the fascination with beetroot with every single chef who prepares a tasting menu? The room we stayed in was great - huge, comfortable bed, roll top bath etc. Breakfast was very good. In summary, location and service great but the menu and food just not up to it. Perhaps I am jaded as I have done a good number of tasting menus but the inane questions from the server ("so what has been your favourite course so far") and the standard "flourish" of delivering at least one course to your table and finishing it in some way in front of you (i.e. pouring some gravy over it) is wearing thin with me. With any high-end tasting menu there is a balance in what you are paying for between the food and the "experience" (the BS factor). In my opinion, MH has got this completely wrong. It is not that they are completely gimmicky (take a bow Heston) but they are relying on the service and the presentation (and it seems to me the volume of food) and forgetting that at the end of the day that food needs to taste of something. Overall, I am afraid that Moor Hall is in Emperor's New Clothes territory. No one will tell you, because they have just forked out £450 for dinner for two (plus £100+ for a bottle of wine that they could buy from Majestic Wines for £25) and are too embarrassed to say so.

Wow wow wow. From beginning to end just sublime. The food is amazeballs. The presentation and thought that goes into each dish is incredible. Even the actual plates have for the most part been designed to but the food on it..! However it is the ambiance and service that are the garnish in this splendid experience. Not too much not too little. Just perfect.
Be the first to ReplyJust WOW!
My husband and I visited Moor Hall a few years ago (pre-COVID) and it was a “Wow” experience then….three years later and Mr Birchall and team, you have upped your game even more - unbelievable! We stayed over on this occasion in the Bilberry Suite which had a view of the lake. The bed was huge, bathroom was enormous and the room itself large and well proportioned. There was nothing I could fault - even the toiletries were my favourite - Pure Lakes!!! The food was as to be expected, sensational. I had the veggie menu whilst my husband had the fish / meat menu. The tastes were out of this world. We had the eight course taster menu and we had the wine flight to complement it. That was good fun and the sommelier knowledgeable, pleasant and no question about the wine was too stupid!!! The staff - from reception, to bar staff to chefs to waiters and waitresses were brilliant - professional, approachable, interesting and all seemed genuinely happy to be there. The icing on the cake was chatting to Mark at the end of our meal. He is a genius. I just can’t fault the experience. Is it pricey? Yes. Is it worth it? Every single penny…….can’t wait to visit again. Moor Hall, you were a delight.

I have been to both Moor Hall and The Barn. Both are absolutely fantastic. I have to say, Moor Hall's food is the best I have ever eaten, by a long way. It is however, intense and expensive, but you do get what you pay for.

Made it back here, and once agsin an awesome stay. This time the Rosehip Suite, a lovely room with views over the lake. Our staybstarted with a garden tour with Cieran, thank you so informative. Dinner was exceptional, great flavours, expertly delivered & explained by chefs & front of house staff. The accompanying drinks flight wonderful, the cheese room definitely worth a second visit. Thank you Mark & the team a great night, great sleep and a little too full to appreciate all the breakfast the following morning. Yet another wonderful meal.

Ok so we actually visited last summer however I’ve only just remembered the trip advisor credentials to be able to log in!
This place was phenomenal! The grounds could fool you into thinking you are deep in the countryside! Sympathetically refurbished Moor Hall has been tastefully decorated and extended to incorporate the old features to tie in nicely with the beautiful modern dining room
We enjoyed a little tour of the kitchen gardens and loved that you could see into the kitchen from the table. Lots of fresh produce from their garden being utilised in the menu. Probably the way of many restaurants may be heading with the prices rocketing for produce. Makes sense, plot to plate and all that, fresher, cheaper and tastier!
The food was sublime, and the evening was just a treat for all the senses. It is definitely in my top 3 along side L’enclume and The Ledbury.
Favourite course? well they were all fantastic (see photos!)
The staff were friendly and while professional they were approachable and we were able to have a laugh with them.
The Wine pairing had some interesting choices on it and while it was fairly pricy worth it to compliment the meal.
A really excellent experience which we would love to repeat when we are next visiting the area! Thankyou to all the staff who made our visit really special!
Outstanding
We visited the restaurant for the first time on Friday. This certainly didn’t disappoint. Every area is tastefully decorated with lovely finishing touches. The staff we’re attentive & friendly. Before being seated, the staff show you into the kitchen, which is a lovely touch - means you don’t have to ask to meet the chef at the end of the dinner! We had the lunch menu, the food (even the choice of plates) was exquisite. We got to choose from a selection of petit fours to go with our coffee - they were like something out of a French patisserie, exceptional. I would definitely recommend Moor Hall & can’t wait to go back.

We had an amazing meal at Moor Hall. The 8 course menu was exceptional, the bar snacks absolutely amazing and the wine pairing was perfect. The Hall itself is simply stunning and the staff were fabulous - all in all a wonderful experience, would highly recommend a visit.
Be the first to ReplyWorld Class Experience
The phrase world class is often overused but in this instance it is well deserved. We had the 8 course tasting menu for lunch which in reality is is really 16 courses of some of the best food you will ever taste. Each course was stunning. The service was exemplary… not a foot wrong… the timing of the dishes was perfect.
There is no getting away that Moor Hall is not cheap BUT for me it’s value for money … this is the best of the best and I’d rather eat here once a year than have a load of mediocre meals throughput the year at average restaurants.
Just perfect!
An absolutely wonderful experience and not just the food.
We visited for our anniversary and had the 8 course tasting menu (you actually get delivered more like 17 courses in total). The service was impeccable, drinks perfect and we savoured every single mouthful of the beautifully put together food. Highlights were the beef tartare, the scallop and the dessert that looks like autumn on a plate!
If you’re going and can do definitely go for the 8 course menu as the experience needs to be appreciated to the full.
The cheese room was wow! The garden and kitchen tour a nice touch and the open fires were a perfect addition.
I was driving so had the paired non-alcoholic drinks (all different teas) and a lot of thought went into that… although I was jealous of the wine pairing!
All in all a very memorable day that we will remember forever… we’ve now decided a Michelin starred restaurant for every anniversary!
Amazing food in a relaxed atmosphere
We were celebrating our wedding anniversary. We could not have chosen a better venue. The tasting menu was absolutely superb with extra surprise treats. We also had the wine flight which again was excellent. The sommelier was very good at describing the wines. The food fully deserves the accolades it has received.
The general manager, Adam, and the rest of the staff were brilliant. Very friendly and they added to our enjoyment of the evening. We loved the dining room and the relaxed atmosphere.
We stayed in the Damson Suite which was lovely. Already booked for next year!
Stunning
My wife and I agree it’s the best restaurant experience we have had, it’s a beautiful setting, we had a lovely room and the food was incredible.
Huge thank you to all of the staff/chefs for making it so special.
Incredible place and so much food. Best breakfast ever too.
Can’t say enough good things about this place. Very special
