Brixton is fast becoming my favourite place to dine in London. Today I went to Nanban, restaurant of former MasterChef winner Tim Anderson serving up "barbaric" Japanese food with more than a little influence from its Caribbean Brixton surroundings. I ordered two things:- Lazy Goat with added Onsen egg- Ackee & saltfish korokkeThe ackee & saltfish korokke arrived first, a breaded croquette with chunks of saltfish and a dark tangy sauce drizzled on top. I have a mixed opinion on saltfish but the potato, ackee and sauce gave this enough balance to avoid being overpowering. The portion is also well judged because as a starter this had the potential to be a tad filling.Shortly after polishing off the korokke the main event arrived. Without hesitation, the Lazy Goat was one of the best bowls of ramen I've ever had. In one dish this tells you everything that Nanban is about. Ramen and a lot of Japanese food in general is about subtlety and the enjoyment of gentle flavours. Nanban's mission is to take the method and ideals of Japanese cuisine and inject some added soul from other lands. There is so much flavour going on: spiciness, sourness, a slight bittersweet caramelisation from the shallots and a delicious rich umami flavour from the tea pickled egg. I'm not the biggest fan of bamboo shoots but the ones here soaked in some sort of scotch bonnet marinade were wonderful. The goat is cooked to perfection with the right amount of chew, my only suggestion is that perhaps a touch more fat would have made this the tiniest bit better. Also worth noting is that there is relatively little broth but it isn't missed. It's far from being a traditional ramen but is a delicate reminder for today's world that collaboration between different cultures can produce great things.Couldn't recommend the ramen dish more.
