Another surprise in Van
What a place, we had a bd dinner and experience a great evening. Shivan was our server and went the extra mile. We had multiple types of beef and veggies to close with a smir. Great evening thank you

A group of us came here for dinner. You need to make reservations online. Our group was given a 2 hour dining period which wasn’t enforced on a week night. We ordered the set menu which consisted a lot of meat dishes. If you are a carnivore, you’ll love this place. We had starters of Gyu - Kaku salad and edamame to S’mores for dessert. *Must order dish - Sukiyaki fried rice was everyone’s favourite! Flavourful and tasty! Ambiance: 4/5 Service: 5/5 - servers were helpful in telling us how long to grill various meats Food: 5/5 - good selection of meats but lacking a good selection of vegetables Parking: paid lot next to the restaurant at Nelson just before you turn right onto Howe. A challenge as restaurant is on a one-way street, Nelson.

This is a very friendly restaurant with a good and varied menu at very reasonable prices, 4 of us dined here and had a wide variety of food, some drinks and only cost $116. It’s well located. We actually visited here a second time during our 8 day trip to Vancouver

5/5 we ordered the party for 4 platter and few extra items! Absolutely delicious and tasty. All the meat was marinated in different sauces. We had a selection of condiments at our table. The sever was amazing and patient with us explaining how long to cook each bbq meat. Everything was eaten up. Best place to go with a group of friends.

There’s something about cooking marinated meats over a hot grill… Love this Gyu-Kaku! I know this is japanese but it reminds me of a Korean BBQ that I used to eat at in Richmond a long time ago.
We had their salad… because we knew we had a LOT of bbq on the way so we’re balanced.
Their chicken karaage felt like it just came out of the deep fryer as it was smokin’ hot, super juicy and delicious. The burnt tongue was worth it!
Next up with their beef sukiyaki bibimbap. It was absolutely delicious with that crispy crusty rice and the perfectly cooked and seasoned beef.
Now on to the cooking. You do your own so you can only blame yourself if it’s over or under cooked! We may have almost ordered all the proteins… Yaki-Shabu Beef,
Premium Ribeye, Kalbi Chuck Rib, Toro Beef,
Pork Belly, Chicken Thigh… My favourite was the Kalbi chuck rib. Just the right balance of flavour, fatty goodness and seasoning.
We were so full at the end of the meal but still ended up having enough room for their taiyaki which was filled with sweet red bean.
I can’t wait to come back here again!
Bbq delight
We didn't want to think much as to what to order and just did their Chef's Favorite option which was plenty of food for two people. All the items came up fast for us to cook and enjoy along with a pitcher of beer of course. Go hungry, leave happy.

Visited Gyu-Kaku on Nelson in downtown Vancouver for lunch in August 2021. All side walls at the restaurant were removed and it gave more open air set up. This was really great for COVID. I felt much more comfortable dining this way than in completely enclosed indoor set up. I chose two different cuts of meat for lunch special. It came with miso soup and small side salad. Everything was tasty and it was good for solo lunch.

What an unique experience. We had never eaten at a restaurant like this. The restaurant taking COVID precautions - taking tempature when you arrive, inform you they do not take cash, cards only. We had filet mignon, assorted veg., garlic noodles. The server advised us how long to cook the food , when to turn over. We had such a good time we went a 2nd time with our daughter, had the meat lovers combo. Service & food were awesome!

Cool staff, super fast service and amazing food! I highly recommend it to any meat lover!
*** 2020 update: Unfortunately, in our last visit, we found a hair in our dinner and then another one in the calamari! They replaced them, but two hairs in one visit was a very shocking experience!
Coping well in COVID times
Gyu-Kaku never fails to impress. It is one of our main go-to restaurants in Vancouver. Some of the selections have been dropped for the COVID-19 era (I miss you deep fried bacon pieces) but solid selections remain.
The service here is always top notch - fast, friendly, and focused.
We couldn't visit Japan this fall but this got us a little closer.
Authentic Japanese BBQ in Vancouver
I love gyukaku.
I used to eat at gyukakus in Tokyo when I lived there.
I am super happy that I can get to experience the authentic gyukaku flavor in Vancouver.
Great service, great selection of alcohol, grea variety of food to choose from. Double thumbs up.
Great intro to Japanese BBQ
I travelled through Japan about 12 years ago, and had Japanese Barbecue several times. After seeing Gyu Kaku on a friends Instagram the craving set in. We booked a table for 4 on a Saturday night, seated right away and our server was at the table promptly. We decided to get the Samurai BBQ Combo which was a variety of Appetizers, Meats and Vegetables(our server said it consisted of their most popular items). The highlights for me were the Short Rib, Filet Mignon, and Garlic noodles. All of our food was delicious, but I will say that 3 of our 4 guests felt a bit hungry still afterwards. I added on the Deep Fried Gyoza afterwards which were tasty as well. All in all, we enjoyed it and would definitely come back!
I should add that there is a bit of a social aspect to Japanese BBQ, grab a pitcher of beer/bottle of wine throw your food on the grill and enjoy yourself!
