I feel honored every time I go to Nonna Dora's.
The food is superb, the menu choices varied, and the service is fine and friendly. The owner is gentle, caring, and dedicated... When the pasta maker is there behind the window, it is interesting to watch her work!! I have nothing but words of praise for this wonderful place...

Pasta from here reminds me of being back in the motherland of good old Italia. Simple dishes yet extremely tasteful is all a restaurant needs sometimes. Would strongly recommend this pasta joint as the service was good, atmosphere was nice and the pasta was some of the best in nyc!

Two minutes into our evening at Nonna Dora's-before we had been served anything except water-I told my dining companion, 'We need to come back here another dozen times.' Because that's how many delicious--sounding pastas and unusual wines/cocktails I had already spotted on the menu..Who doesn't love an entire page of Negroni variations? The Quattro, swapping out Sardinian aperitivo for the Campari, had a sunny, Mediterranean disposition. But I''ll definitely return for the one described as 'an homage to the Japanese satsuma.', not to mention a Bee's Knees made with a funky Mexican gin. And wine: this Italian wine geek practically did backflips after spotting a Biancolella, the rare white grape of Ischia, poured BY THE GlLASS. The puréed fava with dandelion greens was superb, laced with fruity green olive oil and garlic. And our pastas: 3 or 4 top quality ingredients combined with minimal fuss, the whole even better than the sum of its parts. This is true Italian cooking, a cuisine focused on perfectly ripe, seasonal ingredients rather than complicated sauces or techniques. You could close your eyes and imagine you were in Rome. Attentive, knowledgeable, but above all friendly service, water both still and sparkling at no charge, and absolutely stunning pasta-run, don't walk to their odd location next to a Chipotle in Kip's Bay. You'll be really glad you did!Perfect semi-freddo, perusal of an extensive list of after-dinner drinks (5 different Nocinos, a Recioto di Valpolicella BTG), and it was time for espresso and the check. That espresso was the only misstep of the night, more American style than the thick, almost syrupy teaspoon. of caffe you'd be served in southern Italy. Next time, I'll ask for it 'short'. And there will definitely be a next time!
Be the first to Replythe only thing that hurts me every time is the price.
i like going here on a more last minute whim when i know all the other popular pasta places have no reservations left. a bit loud and less of a romantic ambience if you're looking for a dimmer dinner long list of negronis to try! extensive alcohol list. drinks are strong! super tasty homemade pasta. lot of different and unique options. if you prefer more noodles or ravioli types. truly can't go wrong with any, it's what texture you like. cooked al dente which is the best some tomato bread provided too.
Be the first to ReplyWhat an amazing neighborhood gem.
The pasta is INCREDIBLE. I highly suggest the pasta flight. It's good for a date night, or friends dinner. It is pricy. With drinks expect to pay over $100 a person with apps etc. But def worth it and the service is excellent.
Be the first to ReplyVery good ambience.
Always busy when i'm walking by it during the weekdays and weeknights. We shared the sampler, all items were good. Good drink selection too. Just wish the place was larger and easier to get a table at. As for italian food though - in general i feel that the disparity between mediocre italian and excellent italian is small, and thus dont feel like the value is there. Hence the 4 stars.

Nonna Dora is a small little restaurant within walking diatance, that I've been trying to like, and even TRYING to love due to its proximity and popularity. The first time I went there, the manager was slightly off-putting while over sharing facts about his personal life. The second time I went, I wanted to get some warm focaccia to take home to my family, and he immediately responded harshly that I should've ordered it earlier, which quite frankly made zero sense since they serve it all night. The third time I went, I walked in with my husband around 7pm. Before even asking if we had a reservation, he came up to us and told us to come back at 9:30pm. We didn't respond because we were a little confused, and he repeated himself. We then realized that this was due to blatant racism and profiling. He looked at us and didn't even consider that we made a reservation ahead of time. We responded with, "okay can we put our names down?", and he said "nope, just come back and see." His response was harsh and disrespectful, and most of all, unwarranted and undeserving. This restaurant may attract people in Murray Hill for whatever reason, but it is managed by an unkind, ill-mannered, and discourteous team. I tried to appreciate this spot, but they have only disappointed me time and time over.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing experience.
The pasta was so fresh, perfectly cooked and seasoned beautifully. The staff is really friendly, specially our waiter Francisco. He was so attentive and took time to explain the menu and gave us some recommendations. Would definitely recommend for date night or just a night out.

This neighborhood has never had more delicious food than Nonna Dora's: I have lived here 34 years. Also, try the fried oysters...

... Excellent pasta with very extensive wine list. However, it is quite noisy and the high tables in close proximity to the bar, could make for serving challenges. Although our server was efficient, he evinced an attitude, which appeared that he felt 'put upon'. Perhaps he was disappointed that we did not order appetizers a bottle of wine or dessert. Whatever... we probably won't be back

The food isn't bad here and I've eaten here several times but NEVER again. I'm leaving this review because they charged me $100 for a canceled reservation. To be fair the cancellation policy is stated clearly when you make a reservation but it has been my experience if you call and cancel the fee is not charged. I called 2 hours in advance of the reservation and spoke to a gentleman. He said to make sure I canceled on RESY which I did and was charged the $100 the next day. This place is always busy and I've seen them turn many walk ins away so I am certain they filled our table with a walk in or thru RESY When I stopped into the restaurant a few days later a woman reiterated the policy and refused to refund. Terrible customer experience.
Be the first to ReplyThe pasta here.
.. . For the mushroom one they shave a whole truffle on top of it! It's been packed every time I've been there, with all different ages/groups of people. It's a much welcomed injection of delicious coolness to the neighborhood

We're from out of town and went with our respective sons, 16 y/o. It's an intimate, personal, and friendly experience. The food was solid, with a nice cocktail and wine selection. We had a solid, unpretentious, and homey meal.
Be the first to ReplyVery good restaurant.
The pasta is incredible and freshly made by Nonna Dora herself.

The reason to come here is the pasta, however, don't miss the Melanzana (eggplant) antipasti. Also good was the Cavolo (kale). The cannelloni pasta was very good and the cavatelli was good. This is a small restaurant -- a few high tops and a large bar for seating. Service was efficient and Nanna Dora was present.
Be the first to ReplyI had high hopes for this place because I've heard great
I had high hopes for this place because I've heard great things. It was good but not great. I didn't really enjoy the truffle tagliatelle, it was very oily. I expected it to have more of a sauce. The gnocchi with sausage and tomato was very good just needed a little salt. The chocolate mousse was the star of the show it was amazing. It had some nuts in it and I loved it. The owner was very nice and chatted with us during dinner, and the waiter was super sweet and helpful.
Be the first to ReplyDefining Murray Hill as a foodie destination feels very
Defining Murray Hill as a foodie destination feels very much like an oxymoron. If you're looking for cheap beers and post-college-frat-parties, then you're in the right neighborhood. But Nonna Dora's is here to change your perception completely. Nestled in what feels like a slightly obscure location is this gem of a pasta destination. From the grandma behind I Trulli comes this absolutely fantastic little pasta joint. The press as of late has been talking up how the pasta is hand rolled by Nonna Dora herself..which is 100% accurate... I actually walked by one early afternoon to see if I could make a reservation and there she was in the back right behind that glass wall making her perfect pasta. If you're jonesing for high quality italian fare, then make your way over to 2nd avenue asap. My orders below:- Panzerotti :: mini calzones made with burrata, make sure you get them warm.. tasty as hell- Calamari Fritti :: nothing too over the top here, just decent calamari, lightly fried and dusted with sea salt. I will say the dipping marinara with red chili flakes was a nice touch- Dora's Lasagna :: Perfect thinly layered pasta over a meat sauce lasagna. Can't go wrong ordering this one- Mezzelune :: These pillowy beauties were perfect, the mix of umami from the mushroom and the touch of the sea from the shrimp made this one of the best items we ordered- Ravioli Per Olivia :: hands down my favorite dish of the night and I am not even a pesto fan... this one is made with pistachios instead of pine nuts. You can taste the difference and it works perfectlyAll the pastas are cooked al dente and feel light as a feather. Unless you order the entire menu, you won't walk out of here feeling 1000 lbs
Be the first to ReplySimply outstanding food.
We loved the atmosphere. And the fresh pasta taste - wow! Try the truffle pasta. And the cheese calzone minis are amazing. Love the attention of the wait staff too! Only 3 months and it's this outstanding. Can't wIt to see how large of place you will have to get in a few years if it remains this amazing.

Totally worth the hype!! I don't think I'll say anything that hasn't already been said in previous reviews. Everything was incredible. My friend and I shared the pappardelle and the malloreddus. People came up to us and asked what we ordered and if we recommended it, I gather because it just looked and smelled so good. Absolutely get those two. They are unique and very well done. We also had the tiramisu, which was very rich and tasty.
Be the first to ReplyI love this place.
I've ordered to pick up and I've actually eaten inside -- the space is really cool-feeling, way cooler than anything else in the area. A few highlights: the negronis are to dieee for, and the malloredus is such a standout.
Be the first to ReplyJust went last evening.
I had wanted to go since seeing the NYT review but you need to plan in advance because this place has been insanely popular, and it is east to see why after eating there. The waiters are very attentive and friendly and great at guiding you through the menu. I started with prosciutto, a hard cheese (don't recall which one), marinated olives, and Rucola salad. The salad was amazing, particularly the confit tomatoes which were sweet and decadent. They also serve amazing olive oil/tomato focaccia bread which is great with the starters. I went with Malloreddus for the pasta and it was amazing, probably the freshest and best quality pasta I've had in NYC. For dessert, I had strawberry rhubarb panacotta which was also great. Also had a classic Negroni which was excellent and a great Italian red recommended by the waiter.
Be the first to Reply5 stars all the way.
All of the pastas here are handmade and delicious. We had the pasta flight which was 3 great pastas and also ordered the gnocchi which might have been the best out of the bunch. Friendly staff who also offered a good wine recommendation and apps/desserts were good as well (but pasta is the star of the show here).
Be the first to ReplySadly, Nonna Dora's was a disappointment.
I was so excited about eating here and did not have a a good time.I was prepared for the cozy space but was surprised at how poorly laid out it was given the relatively large space. There is an entire kitchen prep area that was barely used the whole evening, yet the dining tables were crowded together. The whole restaurant is essentially a bar area, with only high top tables and bar seats available. Not very comfortable. One of my dining companions had to move his chair at one point so an employee could take out trash behind him. Another had to switch chairs with a not yet filled table because his chair was so wobbly. The service was kind but lacking a bit. My friend's glass of wine arrived after the appetizers and cocktails the rest of the tables ordered. One of the entrees arrived 6-7 minutes after everyone else's food. The small table was over crowded with appetizers and yet only on asking did the server remove the unused wine glasses. The most surprising part of the service was that I was not offered to switch a dish or even offered to be able to order something else in addition when I complained about my food. When our server came over (late, after mostly people had finished food portions of their dishes), I explained that my dish was nothing like what I expected and that I was disappointed. He apologized but offered no remedy. He did not even offer to put in an order for a quick dish that I could have ordered in addition since clearly I was not going to eat this.I ordered the cannelloni ($26), which was described as "STUFFED WITH BURRATA & RICOTTA, WITH CONFIT TOMATO & BASIL". What arrived were a few sheets of pasta in a literal bowl of hot cheese with béchamel sauce and a few tomatoes. It was so salty and rich that I ate maybe 1/4 of it. I felt a bit sick after from the richness. My husband ended up finishing it once we learned there was no remedy to be provided, so I guess some people like this. It just wasn't what I was up for eating that evening. Also ordered by our table:Cavolo (baby kale salad) ($16) - Nothing special and smaller than expected for the price. It would be a good appetizer size for one person. I did appreciate the general serving of pine nuts on it.Polepette (meatballs) ($16) - Best part of the whole evening. These were fluffy and perfect.Tagliatelle with mushrooms and summer truffle ($32) - This was fine but not that good. It was fun that the truffle was shaved on table side.Paparadelle with wild boar ($28) - Nothing special but fineDora's lasagne ($28) - This had good flavor and arrived piping hot with generous tomato sauce. Overall the tomato sauce dishes seem to be what to get here. The Negroni ($20) was good (note that they are pre-batched, not made to order, but that is not uncommon). My "fruity tropical" mocktail ($10) was boring and not well balanced. It tasted like a too tart canned grapefruit soda. I've had much better at other restaurants recently. The restaurant still gets a few stars because the decor is nice and the meatball appetizer was amazing. If I had ordered differently, perhaps I would love loved this place. After this experience with underwhelming food and service, plus uncomfortable chairs, I won't be back.

Great experience! We went here on a Friday as a walk in and had an amazing experience. They were able to seat us and we had a fantastic meal. I will definitely be coming back!
Be the first to ReplyA highly WELCOME addition to the neighborhood.
I've lived within walking distance for almost 20 years, and never has there been an Italian restaurant like this in the area. It has sadly mostly been a wasteland for fine dining...until now. Placed an order for pick up on the way home on Thursday night after reading all the press (family owned and operated; great story!). Beautiful, lovely, warm space - the type of place you would expect to find in the West Village or LES. Chatted with the owner while waiting for my order, who couldn't have been nicer. When I got home, I opened my Arugula Salad and the Tagliatelle with Wild Mushrooms & Black Truffles. Also included were 4 slices of focaccia with tomatoes. Portions were generous (LOVE that!). I also popped the chocolate pudding cake into a 350 degree oven as instructed so it would be perfect for after my meal. Everything was fresh, fresh, fresh. The homemade pasta was super light. The flavors of everything were on point! A real treat. Just an absolutely delightful meal! I will definitely be heading back to Nonna Dora's pronto. I was eyeing tables that had the salumi & cheese plates with jealousy while waiting. Can't wait to try more dishes! A+ all around.
