Nostrana Portland Reviews from The Last Year

First off they now add a mandatory 22% service fee to the check that does not include gratuity. I brought a couple friends here before we went to an event. Ambience is nice and their pasta is hand made. Fettuccine was good. The crust on the Lemon tart was so hard I could not cut through it. The waitress brought me a steak knife and I still couldn't get through it. :-( The waitress did not offer a replacement or refund which was shocking for a $15 dessert. There are many great authentic Italian restaurants in Portland...Just sayin! This made me sad.
Food was incredibly expensive and had almost no wow factor.
Ambience and environment was very pretty and cozy. The food was just not worth the price tag at all. I got the beef tagliata and for a $40 steak, you only get 6 pieces of thin steak slices paired with arugula that doesn't combine at all with the steak. The spicy rotisserie chicken is very basic and doesn't wow you at all but comes at a hefty $33. Worst part is that the restaurant automatically charges a 22% service charge for service that was fairly mundane and mediocre. Aside from the environment, this restaurant really doesn't have any wow to the food or service.

My sister was in town and I made a last minute decision to take her out for pasta. We tried the gnocchi and it was so savory and tender. Our server was warm and friendly also! Will definitely return!
Great food and wonderful atmosphere.
Their rotisserie chicken is delicious and the strawberry rhubarb crisp is a great ending. Their menu has expanded over the years with more options and bigger wine list.

Nostrana dipped in quality for a little while but they're back on track! Dinner was great and was exactly like I remember the first time I came here many years ago.
Service was great.
Food and drinks were flavorful and did not disappoint. We came on a busy weekend and didn't have any tables but they had room at the bar which was a quaint space. Would definitely go back
"Good Italian! Just Be Ready For The Service Fee"
I reached out to Nostrana with an unusual request: ordering food to go. They really don't do takeout, but the host I spoke with over the phone obliged me(ordered 30 mins before closing). The service was warm and attentive, and my order was ready within 15 minutes. However they didn't pack any napkins in my to-go bag. Also, they don't have to go cutlery at all. So, me being from out of town diring this visit, that caused me to have to make another stop. However, the food made up for it. We did a couple of gnocchi entrees, the pork ragu gnocchi & the pancetta gnocchi. Both were excellent, and fulfilled us after a long day of flying across the country. The restaurant itself is beautiful, and was very busy for a Thursday night. I was okay with the 22% service charge added on "to pay our staff a living wage." Just know the dishes are pricy for the portion size, so just be prepared to spend a nice amount of money here, especially on a large party.

I came here for an early dinner recently and had a great time. As it was a nice day out, my boyfriend and I sat outside on their patio. However, I also noted that the inside of the restaurant is so beautiful that it makes me want to dine here again (but inside next time haha). My boyfriend and I ordered their foccacia & ciabatta, their cacciucco, the polpettine pizza, and meatball capellini. Everything was delicious. The foccacia and ciabatta came out with the most fragrant and delicious olive oil; we had to ask the waitress where it was from (and we'll definitely be buying some of our own). The cacciucco was delicious and light, with lots of seafood. The polpettine was amazing with a light and thin dough. And the capellini was delicious, with generous portions of meatballs. I would definitely come back and would love to try their wine bar next time.

We made a reservation but still were asked to wait for our table despite arriving 5 min earlier than our reservation time. The food did not justify the price, it isn't the most expensive food ever but my partner's entree left him still hungry and the pizza I got had a salad dumped on it which made cutting it a little tedious. We also had gone for our anniversary and listed so on our reservation (they asked) and it wasn't recognized by a complimentary dessert or anything similar. Kind of a bummer but not that big of a deal. The drinks were yummy and ambience was nice but that's about it.

The service was really amazing, but the food was very limited and just ok- especially for the extremely high prices. We showed up early and we weren't allowed to sit at either of the bars to have a drink in because they use those seats for dinner reservations only never heard of a nice restaurant where you couldn't have a drink before dinner at the bar Lauren, our server deserves 10 stars though- he service and attitude completely saved us from not getting up and leaving.
Great service from Trevyn! She was really sweet and helpful
Great service from Trevyn! She was really sweet and helpful with drink recommendations. Pizza was amazing!!
Mandatory service charges and paying for bread left a bad taste in my mouth.
Will not return since mandatory service charge and charging for BREAD! Was a loyal customer since they opened but no longer. Too expensive, food getting lackluster, resting on their laurels, etc, etc. Don't get me wrong, some things were still great but I won't be going back to see how things evolve. Goodbye!
Authentic!
An authentic Italian restaurant with a menu which changes nightly. The wine list was extensive and the variety of craft cocktails was entertaining. Very tasty dinner with great flavor and very attentive service.
The service charges are over-the-top ridiculous.
We have loved Nostrana over many years, but Covid and reduced hours, etc. kept us away until my birthday. We split a salad, split a tortellini and split a dessert, with two glasses of wine each. ( we are seniors—can’t eat large portions anymore). We also purchased a loaf of bread to go. The bill including the 22% was something like $158!! (For essentially one total meal and 4 small glasses of wine!). On top of that was an extra slip for a service charge for the waitress. She said we didn’t have to do that, but we felt intimidated , so we tacked on another $10. The total was about$195 something. We love Nostrana, but after 25 years, we will not be returning. It’s just too much! We felt we were paying your servers more than you were! We spent a little over 90 minutes there, and the server was probably serving several tables. It was ridiculous! Please rethink this policy. We felt taken advantage of. Just think— if each of us had had a modest three course dinner, the bill would have come to close to $400!!
Sadly, it was not a good experience for us.
I think the 2 most shocking things were the two small triangle pieces of bread in the burrata dish for $18 (it was ridiculous, honestly. 3 people and only two small pieces of bread that were even too small for the little ball of cheese and large dollop of relish) And then the required 22% service fee so they can pay their employees a “robust” wage. No, we are being forced to pay them a robust wage and you are gouging us accordingly. Aside from that, there was WAY too much arugula on the thin and soggy bottomed pizza (the Margherita pizza was thin and a little less soggy, but still soggy, as well) and the skin on the roasted chicken wasn’t brown or crispy enough. The server was very nice though, but when I asked if the tip was already added to the bill, she said “well, that’s the service fee for the restaurant, but yes, I guess”. So was the expectation to add more as a tip there? It sure felt that way. A lovely atmosphere, to be sure, but we won’t be back and we would not recommend it.
Fish Friday sucks
We’ve been here several times. We love the restaurant and the ambience and the great service. They are pushing Fridays as “Fish Friday”, or something like that. I was looking forward to the sea scallops. I am so stupid. They have this on their online menu. But they haven’t had sea scallops in YEARS. Please stop the false advertising. And update your stupid website. Crab cakes? 75% bread with the essence of crab. That is not fish. Mussels? I hate mussels. And, that is not fish. Trout? You have that on your menu all the time. I’ve had it five times. There was no Fish Friday fish. Please just stop the false advertising. You are embarrassing yourselves. Please just stop it.
Good restaurant, but service fees are a shakedown
The food, service, and ambiance were all very good. What caused me the most heartburn was the 22% service fee added to the bill. This was not a surprise, and I really don't mind paying it. Per their menu: "A Service Charge of 2% is applied to all checks at Nostrana, providing a professional and equitable wage for all team members. 100% of collected service charges are distributed to employees in the form of an elevated, fixed hourly rate. " Fair enough. BUT . . . we were also presented with a separate gratuity slip along with our bill. At this point, it felt very much like a shake-down. This restaurant needs to make this an "either/or" policy on service fee (tips), not a "both/and". I won't be back.
Outstanding
Great food and drinks and wonderful service, highly recommend. Such a pretty space and we loved the patio—inside is beautiful too!
Great food
Awesome Italian food, with a beautiful, comfortable outdoor patio. Kids had delicious pizzas. Adults tried a variety of pastas and desserts. All great!
Way expensive
I have been eating at Nostrsna for years. Enjoyed the tents during covid. The meal was good as was the service. Nothing exceptional especially considering the cost. Then comes a 22% mandatory tip and the waitress explaining that it is for the house. “If you want to give me a tip that is extra.” It felt like she wasn’t being treated fairly and I wanted to encourage her to work elsewhere if that was the case. I used to tip more than 22% unless the service was bad. I ended up leaving the 22%.
