This Is A Top-Notch Restaurant.
The Oriole is a fine dining restaurant in Chicago's West Loop. It is home to a number of constantly evolving testing menu's as well as a string of Michelin awards. As a quirky arrival, I was husked up a freight elevator to the dining room given a glass in hand (not so quirky). The design of the Oriole is impressive, with imposing high ceilings and an elegant bar. The food items here reflect the passion of the culinary chieftain and crew as illustrated with a food catalog that ranges from hiramasa in apple broth to Sablefish bedded in rice. The wine program is very strong with 3 pairing options for meal accompaniment. My tasting menu skewed toward seafood ..oh..la..la the likes of Sablefish Belly, Raw Oysters smothered in pork broth and other creations from the sea. The presentation was so pretty I didn't know whether to stare at it or eat it.............I ate it. This is a top-notch restaurant.

The freight elevator opens and you are transported into another world! The detail that went into transforming this industrial space into a fine dining restaurant is incredible. I love the progression with small bites at the bar, an amazing dish in the kitchen and then on to the table! Forget about "supplements" The foie gras, caviar and wagyu beef are all included. Standing in the kitchen, an oasis of calm and concentration, we had a bite of foie gras on brioche that was simply amazing. It just got more creative from there. The "crudites" with brandade and caviar was perfectly balanced, each of the vegetables perfectly cooked. The matsutake mushroom dish was simply an umami bomb, set off by a perfectly chosen sake. Sablefish was up there with one of the best fish dishes I have ever had but the brioche that accompanie it? It's what dreams are made of. The capellini with truffles, a signature disk, was so delicious. The A5 wagyu with kohlrabi was a fantastic bite. I actually thought it might have been better without the peppercorns, I felt they distracted more than enhanced. The deserts were great, certainly technically well done and delicious. After the creative and surprising savory courses they did feel rather... well... like really good deserts. As an ending to an incredibly creative and surprising meal I felt they could have been a bit more original. Set the pastry chef free! The staff was amazing, well trained, incredibly knowledgeable and clearly enjoying what they do. The sommelier is nothing short of genius the wine pairings were perfect. The wines are actually very accessible, there were several that I wanted to try more of and I found them easily on line. Oriole may not have the most Michelin stars in Chicago but I know where I would go for my next special occasion. Highly recommended.
Be the first to ReplySuperlative Chicago Dining
I have been to at least a half a dozen super-high end tasting menu restaurants in Chicago and Oriole is simple superb and superlative. The food is divine in addition to its presentation rather than the other way around. They get the number of courses just right as opposed to too many. The ambiance and dining experience is special and just the best. This is now my go-to restaurant for those special guests who want an ultimate dining experience.
Be the first to ReplyWhere’s that third star, Michelin?
Exceptional on all levels. Fun exploration of cuisine and space, surprises at each turn. Not sure why they don’t have three Michelin stars!!
Be the first to ReplyA one of a kind dining experience
The experience of a lifetime. From the second you walk in the door, to the time you walk out, Oriole gives you the perfect dining experience. We were fortunate enough to spend our 10 year wedding anniversary here, and our time spent was amazing. Each of the 12 courses were sublime (the second course was a foie gras with strawberries and anise, and it was perfection). The other courses ranged from sea urchin with king crab to a capellini and a sablefish. All I keep thinking about is our next visit (which will be soon) Definitely the best meal I've ever eaten. Thank you Leroy, Jason, Daniel, Ravi and the rest of the team, for making our anniversary a memorable one. See you soon!
Be the first to ReplyDefinitely a three star experience.
The multi-course tasting menu is Kaiseki inspired, and the restaurant delivered a meal that competes with the best in Paris or Kyoto. Every one of the 14 courses had a unique and excellent flavor. Service was impeccable. Their wine list was not extensive but had a good selection of properly aged wines. We had a large group so we made our own wine paring: a 10 year old champagne "La Grand Dame", an 8 year old Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru, and a 13 year old Chateauneuf. Definitely a three star experience.
Be the first to ReplyVery good, but not great
My first visit to Oriole, what they call Oriole 1.0, several years ago, made me very happy. A fine dining experience that felt comfortable. Every note was pitch-perfect. Over time, things have become more stuffy, and it feels like the staff is reading their reviews, and getting cocky. The hostess started things off badly. She could not have been less interested in our party, and honestly never stopped looking at her phone, even while talking with us. Within seconds it felt like we had broken many unspoken rules, and we were on her bad list immediately. We were not to sit down on the bench in the lobby, but rather forced to stand in front of a blazing space heater while she texted furiously. She would take our coats, but not our wine, and seemed irritated that we didn't know what she was willing to do. Etc. Service was confusing and distracting as around a dozen people appear as your server throughout the night - so you never know who to talk to. And the friendliness from past years seems to have been replaced with smugness - as in be glad you're here. Many of the food courses were truly amazing. However, several were just too salty, and this for a person who is never shy with salt. All in all, it was a good dinner, it just wasn't special, like it was the first time. The chef and his wife were not present, so maybe that affected the evening to an extent, but that still wouldn't explain the service that kept us on edge all night, wondering what we were going to do next to upset them. After this visit, it will be a while before I consider returning.

This was an amazing experience. We had multiple courses—each one exceeding our expectations! Portions were small to allow for enjoyment of each one. Service was excellent. I highly recommend their eatery for a fantastic evening of dining.
Be the first to ReplyAn amazing Michelin 2-Star Experience and fabulous service!
I flew to Chicago this week for a meeting, and I managed to secure a late dinner reservation at Oriole. Although I could not get the first seating, I was still very excited to see what a 2-star Michelin restaurant had to offer. The service was excellent right from the start. and I was given a complimentary drink at the bar before the staff led me to my table. The food was amazing and the very creative. The service was attentive without being intrusive. At the end of night, the captain helped me to arrange an Uber to take me back to my hotel. I would definitely go back for another spectacular dining experience.
Be the first to ReplyRun, don’t walk
Unbelievable experience. I can’t say enough about the food, the service, and the space. I don’t know what I was expecting but it far exceeded it. The food was creative, interesting, and delicious. The service was attentive without being intrusive. The servers, of which there were many, were very knowledgeable about the food. The wine pairings were very nice. I really appreciated that the tables were not on top of each other and the noise level in the restaurant was low to moderate. A very special experience.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic Service
My fiancé and I had a lovely experience at Oriole. The customer service is top notch and the presentations are brilliant! Unfortunately, I didn’t really enjoy all the food during our visit. When staff learned I was not particularly satisfied with some of the selections, they went above and beyond to make things right! I will definitely give Oriole another try due to their excellent service!

Spectacular experience in every way.
The food was superb: elegant, flavorful, interesting, innovative. Worthy of the Michelin stars without being inaccessible.
The beverage pairings were fantastic, and each pour was served with just the right level of description. We did one regular pairing (which, interestingly, featured wines, a sake, and a cider) and one reserve pairing (all wines).
The service was spot-on. Not a single detail was missed from start to finish. Despite the high level of polish and professionalism, not one staff member the entire evening had a whiff of pretension. Many had great sense of humor. And one spoke about having never worked in a restaurant with a more inclusive environment.
Perhaps most impressive was the totality of the experience; this is a restaurant thinking about dining as something larger than the sum of its parts (food, beverage, service). From the very cool entry, to enjoying the first few courses in a chic lounge, to watching the kitchen in synchronized action at a standing counter for a course, to the energetic yet private-feeling dining room, to the uniquely typeset menus we were presented at the meal’s conclusion, this was a night we won’t forget!
Cannot recommend enough. Obviously pricey, but worth it.
feel Salty
The place is good. But I ate a shell of shrimp from New Zealand langoustine. It was so disappointing. I spent around 400 dollars for a meal, and I found sheep of shrimp? And the restaurant is a Michelin two star restaurant.
Besides, most dishes are too salty for me. I told the waitress dishes were too salty after the third dish. But they cannot adjust the level of salt for me. It was a tough time for me, one bite with one cup of sparkling water. I needed to drink some hot soup to relieve my stomach ache after I came back home
A Wonderful Dinner !!
This was without a doubt the best dinner I have ever had. To be sure, the restaurant itself was beautiful, and the service was superb. Beautiful dining room with very friendly and great service staff, and a well executed tasting menu. Wine list was very good. Would go again tomorrow if they had space.
Be the first to ReplyReally great experience...
My wife and I were celebrating our first anniversary and they did an amazing job by being our hosts during this first celebration for us. They made it friendly and special all the time. I have been able to visit some of these types of restaurants, mainly in Mexico and this was not so different, the flavors were incredible and the drinks pairing were outstanding! Especially the one with truffle and sake. If I had to criticize one thing, it would be the sauce that was added to my lobster, it was a bit salty, but there is nothing in particular that I would consider bad here, service is not pretentious which made it way better, really, this is big for me as I work in this industry.
Maybe the music curatorship could be better too.
Thank you all for being part of our special celebration, you're now part of our story...
Outstanding place
This place is absolutely outstanding. The food was incredible, as well as the service. I am grateful to have stumbled upon it. I will certainly be sure to come back the next time we're in Chicago.

I love this place and we will be back very soon and thanks to people who serve as with a warm big smile
Be the first to ReplyVery good, not worth $500 a head
We have been very fortunate to travel extensively and have eaten at some of the “best restaurants” in the world. I get it, at this level of establishment there are very few bargains, dinner with wine paring at $500 a head is very hard to justify and no room for any reservation. Very very good, not great.

We love it. We’ve been 6 or 7 times and have never been disappointed! Exceptional food and excellent service!

every single course was an A+. Unbelievable food, service and ambiance. This restaurant is the best in Chicago. No fussy tickets that need to be purchased beforehand, no scouring the internet for greedy diners selling their reservations to the highest bidder. WE will continue to go here two to three times a year as long as they will take us.
