Good steak
We had dinner here. We had two steaks and the swordfish. We started with the egg rolls which were very good. The ribeye and NY steaks were good and swordfish were good. The Yukon potatoes and Mac and cheese were very good. Very expensive.
Be the first to ReplyOVERPRICED, Tough Steak & Way Over Rated!
Rib Eye is $56 and up, two of us ordered it and both found it very tough. Concrete floors, picnic tables (no linen) and not one living plant let alone flowers - has the atmosphere of a Food Court. Service was poor and surly. Everything is al cart so the steak arrived on a huge plate with nary a piece of parsley just sliding around in its own grease. The $22 hamburger has a 1" thick slice of tomato - impossible to pick-up and eat - the baked potato is a grilled concoction of cheese and ? - both look like CARTOON FOOD! Photos on this site don't represtent what they are serving now. Highly disappointed and advising locals not to go.

I had the ribeye, and it was delicious and done to perfection. The Babette meal for my two guests was not good. The quail was undercooked and not tasty at all. For the price it was very disappointing.

I was hesitant to try this restaurant because it was on the pricey side, but it was excellent! I had the flank steak and it was perfectly cooked and very flavorful. The cocktails were delicious, the sides were large enough to share, and the chocolate mousse dessert was wonderful. The best part was the service--our waiter was very fun! We all agreed this restaurant exceeded our expectations.

We met our friends from college days (of 52 years) for dinner at Ox + Anchor Restaurant in San Luis Obispo, California. The wait staff who served us (Chris and Katrina) could not have been more friendly, attentive and courteous. The steak, swordfish, King Salmon, chopped salad and desserts (Lemon Tart, Chocolate Cake and Carrot Cake) were over-the-too delicious!

The Ox + Anchor restaurant provides wonderful service and wonderful meals. We had a diverse selection of entrees from Filet Mignon to Pork Chops to Salmon for the 5 of us. All were prepared well, but one of the Pork Chops did come out a bit dry, while the other was nicely moist. An Egg Roll appetizer and a baker Alaska dessert rounded out a nice evening of fine dining. Beda’s Biergarten is the place to go for as close to authentic German food that is not being served in Germany. The various kinds of Schnitzel, the Goulash, and all of the other menu items reminded us of each time we had eaten in Germany. The beer is cold and imported…the red cabbage, the spinach, the sauerkraut…all extremely good…and I could go on, but I think you’ve gotten the picture.

We were a group of 16, the best appetizer (in my opinion) was the tuna tartar. Freshly baked bread was also on the table. Delicious! We were in a private dining room and the service was outstanding throughout! Wine and water glasses replenished often. Three in our group ordered salads, They were all huge, enough to share. Diner on my left, ordered the Cobb, which doesn't show up on their online menu. He cleaned the plate. Across from me, ordered the "crispy bibb lettuce" which he seemed to enjoy and it looked delish! Hubby ordered the Cesar, and I had a taste. it was different than described. There were Carrot shavings, a few other veggies, hearts of romaine with a herby light cream dressing. It's my habit to eat a little lighter for dinner so I resisted my impulse to order the tuna tartar for my main since I had enjoyed more than my share during the app round. I ordered the crab cake. Light crispy outside, tender and moist crab inside. Exceeded my expectations! I had a taste of my husband's NY strip. Also Delicious. (I don''t eat beef often and when I do I'm discerning). This was worth it. Many others ordered other steaks but since I didn't taste them I won't give an opinion other to say they all seemed to enjoy them. I can't say enough about the service. Top Notch! Professional

Spectacular service, delicious food and quiet atmosphere. We split the rib eye and brought half of it home - we added a baked potato and it was delish. They bake their bread in house and you could tell. It was delish and fresh! It is a little pricey but for a splurge - it’s worth it!
Be the first to ReplyOkay food, overly attentive service, somewhat sterile environment.
Had dinner here last month. It's a very trendy looking space, but felt sterile to me. Food was okay. I had the prawn cocktail and scallops for entree. Both were okay to good, nothing to wow me. We had the baked alaska for dessert, which I was really excited about. Unfortunately, they poured alcohol (rum?) over the dessert and lit it on fire. Nice special effects, but I didn't like the alcohol taste and it pretty much ruined the dessert for me. Service was good, but a little too attentive, to the point where it became intrusive with the water refills.

We chose Ox and Anchor for a family celebration based on the great reviews, but we were sorely disappointed. The food was worth a 3 - more on that later - and the ambience and service a 4 and a 5 respectively, but based on the price I’m giving Ox and Anchor an overall rating of 2. At this price point, everything should be excellent, and it wasn’t. We all had steaks: a filet, which was OK, a hanger steak, flavorful but a bit dry, and a ribeye, tough, dry and lacking in the expected flavor. This last steak didn’t resemble any ribeye we’ve ever had before. The steaks were noticeably charred, but otherwise cooked to the right temperature. All the steaks ran around $50, including a choice of sauce. Our red wine bordelaise was bitter, suggesting to me that it was made using stale leftovers from bottles sold by the glass. Sides were priced separately, around $16 each, and large enough to share. The potato puree was very soft and didn’t really taste like potato at all, and the creamed spinach was watery and flavorless. What did we enjoy most? The bread and butter, and our own good choice of wine. Perhaps we hit a bad night; other reviewers seem to be very enthusiastic. But we certainly won’t be back, and we won’t be recommending this establishment to any of our friends.
Be the first to ReplyGrad celebration ..large party..yummy food and great atmosphere
Little slow to get started.. but once we ordered..they kept it all coming.. Large group w young children and tired people. Our party of 4 dined at the Ox + Anchor on 04/01/22 and, no joke, it was one of the best dining experiences we’ve had. Bruce, our waiter, was very welcoming and attentive. He knew the menu well, and was cheerful and enthusiastic when explaining or answering questions about the menu. We ordered the Oysters and Yellowfin Ahi Tuna Tartare, the Rib Eye, Pork Chops and Hanger Steak, roasted Asparagus and Potato purée. WOW!!! Everything was incredibly prepared, tasty and beautifully presented. Particularly incredible was the Pork Chops. Two of us ordered and we both agreed they were the best we’ve ever tasted. Bruce explained the preparation well, and as he described, they were moist, juicy, and finished to perfection. The Hanger Steak and Rib Eye were also exceptionally flavorful! For our sides, the potatoes were prepared using the true french technique: they were light, buttery, and melted on your tongue, and the asparagus were roasted to perfection. Various sauces were provided, and the vegetables were excellent with or without. We declined dessert being very satisfied, yet the waiter brought us a small treat to give just a little sweetness to the end of a remarkable meal. The Ox + Anchor delivers a dining experience that shouldn’t be missed, and should be experienced more than once!

We visited during restaurant month (January) and had the 3-course menu. To start off the fresh bread was delicious. We all had the tuna tartare appetizer which was excellent and quite large. The rest of my family had the steak and I had the scallops - all yummy. By the time dessert came we were all stuffed but couldn't pass it up.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious cocktails and cuisine, but the service is the star.
Steaks cooked perfectly, the sauces devine. The service so professional yet incredibly accommodating. Go for a nice dinner, special occasion or not.

Our server, Marcus, made us feel welcome, he was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the cuisine. We had the puréed potato and we were blown away at how amazingly tasty this dish was we kept saying what have they done to these potatoes? They’re freaking amazing! It was served in a cast-iron pot and the two of us had to bring some home. I had the hanger steak medium rare it was perfectly done with a nice char the chimichurri was a wonderful complement. Carrie had the lobster, the dish was a work of art. melts in your mouth, rich wonderful lobster with that fluffy magical gnocchi. The creamed spinach with crispy onion rings was delightful, Rich, cream and crunchy! The goat cheese croquet, OMFG, lavender honey, heirloom tomato marmalade mixed with goat cheese interior, crispy on the outside melt in your mouth hell yeah!
We also had the Ahi tartare… this was the star of the evening. Wonderful pickled onions jalapeños, scallions, won ton and OMG how did they make that wonderful ponzu? on a bed of avocado.
What a wonderful experience, a gift! Go here, order the menu, you will not be disappointed
Ox and Anchor knocks it out of the Park!
Ox and Anchor is a GEM in SLO! We decided to try out the Restaurant in search of “new” places to dine. From the front desk staff to wait staff all were very well trained, professional and provided excellent customer service and provided a high quality experience from start to finish! The food was fresh, well presented and absolutely delicious from cocktails, appetizers, main and desert 👍. We had such a positive experience we came back the following week with our friend who is a Chef and owns three restaurants of his own. He was equally impressed with the wait staff and attention to detail of the food prep and presentation! 10 Stars!
Be the first to ReplySpectacular gastronomic delight.
A spectacular restaurant that puts a chic twist on a traditional steakhouse.
Everything is ala carte. The sides are generous in size.
Put away your preconceived perceptions about what a side dish or salad will be. They put a great twist on everything - it will not be what you’re expecting.
The entire experience was surprise after surprise.
There were no disappointments.
Our steaks were done perfectly and melted in our mouth tender.
It is pricey, but oh, so worth it!
We are always super excited
We are always super excited about a new restaurant in town. We had a date night and decided to try out Ox & Anchor a new steak house. Reservations were made easy online and I even got text reminders.
Upon arrival we were walked to the restaurant by a very nice young guy working at the hotel which the restaurant is attached to.
Entering the place, it is bland, boring and looks a little like a hotel buffet or cafeteria. (Really wish the decor was fancier and nicer)
However we had fabulous service from our waiter and the food was delicious.
Husband had a rib eye with chimircuri sauce. I had amazing grilled artichokes and Mac and Cheese that was to die for. The baked potato came covered in grilled onions (not listed on the menu) neither me or my husband ended up eating the potato as we strongly dislike onions.
We brought a bottle of wine and paid the corkage so I didn’t get to see the wine list.
Good steaks
We had a good dining experience. The ribeye was cooked perfect and very good. My son had the New York and loved it and the brutal sprouts. My wife had the tuna and salad and enjoyed it. The mashed potatoes were very good and we all loved the bread. Worth a return trip.

Ox and Anchor is located inside Hotel San Luis Obispo, situated on a covered patio. Service is outstanding and competent. Cocktails are perfectly concocted. Great wine list. Food is good but not excellent.
We started with the Ox + Anchor Eggrolls, creative. Main courses consisted of Swordfish, Chicken, & Pork Chop. Sides, loaded baked potatoes and Fries.
I would definitely return and I do recommend Ox and Anchor.
Lots of Pluses, a Few Minuses, Lots Of $$$’s
Really enjoyed our meals, crab cakes, Bibb lettuce salad, NY steak, duck, lemon tart. Yes, we were hungry. Excellent service. Nice atmosphere.
Here’s what I don’t like: Valet should be free for dining guests, not $9 plus tip. Corkage should also be free, for at least SLO County Wines, not $25. And, my biggest grip, at these prices, and, given its all ala carte, ALL STEAKS should be USDA Prime, not just the NY and Hanger Steak.
Address these issues and I will be a frequent, repeat customer (I’ve eaten six times at Somerset in the Pismo Marriott since they opened, months after your hotel, for example).
