Just wow!!! The flavors of your favorite chineese food without the bloating afterwards. Some creative combinations. Loved, loved everything I ate. Go with friends and share.
Be the first to ReplyI had the popular chicken and rice dish, and the flavors
I had the popular chicken and rice dish, and the flavors were so incredible. However, pieces of my chicken being obviously pink on the inside didn't really inspire me to enjoy the rest of it. From what I understand the chicken is slow cooked in these spices and aromatics, so maybe I just received a few under done pieces? Would definitely come back and try other things on the menu!

I recently heard an interview with Chef Johnny Lee on KCRW Radio's Good Food, and learned that PRD will be closing. I'm so glad that I was able to make it there on their last weekend! We arrived before 10:40 am and it was drizzly and cold, but there was a long line. I ordered their famous Hainan Chicken Rice Plate to go, and yes, it did live up to the hype. Despite the long wait, I'm glad I got to visit. Service was friendly, but they were super busy and even after ordering, the wait was pretty long. The Hainan Chicken was delicious, along with the flavorful rice. Chicken was so moist--- cooked perfectly and the accompanying dipping sauces complemented the chicken so well. Such an enjoyable meal! I loved the ginger scallion dipping sauce. The spicy red sauce and the dark sticky sweet soy sauce were also great. I had some leftover, and steamed the chicken and rice the next day and thoroughly enjoyed it.While I was waiting for my order, the one dish that they were serving a lot of and looked amazing was the Char Siu Plate with noodles and Yu Choy. In PRD's future incarnation, I'm hoping to be able to try this dish one day.
Be the first to ReplyA contemporary Chinese eatery part of the Chinatown revival.
Nestled in a small space between Thank You Coffee shop and an incoming bakery. Look for the line spilling out onto Hill St. This isn't "authentic" like they do in the old country but it strikes a balance between the flavors of home and the modern American palate. It's a great spot for the uninitiated to try out different dishes featuring some of Cantonese food's greatest hits along with some items that are truly Asian-American concoctions. The Char Sui though not the best I've had was damn tasty and definitely worth a go. The Chicken Rice (only available weekends) is a great addition to the menu. The menu can change so if something sounds appetizing, go for it because it may not be on the menu next time.
Be the first to ReplyI am extremely dissatisfied with Pearl River Deli
I am extremely dissatisfied with Pearl River Deli restaurant's service today. If they only serve 30 orders of hainan chicken rice, they should inform customers beforehand. This way, I wouldn't have to make the long drive to the restaurant at 11 am when they open, only to wait for 40 minutes and be told that the hainan chicken rice is sold out within 30 minutes. It is a complete waste of time for customers, and the restaurant doesn't seem to care that you're waiting on a cold, rainy day. I find their approach to be manipulative and dislikable.

price: $40 for everythingwe got the fried pork chop & charsiu with egg noodles & cucumber salad & hong kong lemon tea :D the fried pork chop was soooo yum and so perfectly seasoned & was tender inside too. the charsiu was not too salty or sweet which i liked but it wasn't as tender as i would've hoped. the cucumber salad was sooo good & so refreshing i loved the sauce! the hong kong lemon tea was alright, wasn't that strong so i would probably skip on it.

Finally made it here one Saturday morning We came right at 11 and there was already a line out the door. We opted for take out to avoid the long line and just sat at one of the tables outside. Ordered a few things and enjoyed all of them Marinated cucumbers were crisp but I expected more of a spice The tofu was also yummy. A very tender crunch on the outside and the accompanying oyster sauce is great with rice. Just wasn't a whole lot of tofu, especially as it's meant to share. Pork chop bun was delicious. Their specialty for a reason. Tender, super flavorful pork chop on a side and sweet bun. A little weird to share but it was too delicious for me to care. I almost didn't get the Portuguese baked rice but so glad I did. I come from large Portuguese community and this is something unlike I've ever had. Turns out it's a traditional Pearl River take on Portuguese food. I can see the Portuguese inspiration with heavy potatoes and carrots, but with a coconut curry flavor. Very yummy but a little expensive for rice and chicken thighs. The panden waffle was delicious as well. Besides the pork chop bun my favorite dish here. Can't wait to see what the future of PRD brings. They clearly have the clientele to thrive and I will be back once they reopen!
Be the first to ReplyThe Macau pork chop bun is really mind-blowing goodness.
From the crispy fluffy bun, to the super tasty crunchy tender chop, perfectly accompanied by the relish topping. I literally held the chop bone and ate the thing like a lollipop. What a creation. Best wishes to the chef's next endeavor! Will be missing this lots.
Be the first to ReplyNo but that char siu is AAMAAAAZING.
My wife and I both ordered the same thing but honestly good because there was no way I would have shared. It seems like this is their claimt o fame and with good reason. The staff were like, amazing. It only took like 10-15 minutes but they were really (unnecessarily) apologetic about the wait, but i appreciated their concern. 10/10, cant wait to go back.

It's a real shame that Pearl River Deli doesn't have a currently sustainable business model. My friend has been consistently sharing PRD food posts with me too. So with that plus the news they're closing down, it was time to try it out.Ordered the Hainan chicken, beef chow fun, shrimp toast, and the Pandan waffle. I'm not sure how they don't have a sustainable business model, the food is really good here! The Hainan chicken, which everyone comes for, lives up to the type. Perfect Hainan chicken. Beef chow fun is not my preferred style as uses thicker noodles than I would typically prefer, but still good. Shrimp toast was interesting as it's definitely a fusion item, but I liked it as it had good flavor. Staff were really friendly here! No complaints.Shame that PRD is closing, but they have their reasons. Hope they can return with whatever new business model they're trying to convert to.
Be the first to ReplyInventive and fun pop up shop.
Follow their instagram to get the scoop on their ever changing weekly menu. Hoping they get a permanent, sit down spot soon. The dishes vary from Chinese to Southeast Asian, from traditional to modern. It could be a bit on the expensive side - a hipster tax to show off how cool you are - but the quality lives up to its promise.
Be the first to ReplyPRD recently moved into its new location in Chinatown.
It's next to the neon-lit plaza with the Bruce Lee statue. Its entrance is a small opening, marked with dozens of red lanterns hanging over the hallway leading to the small restaurant space. So glad they have a restaurant space now and you can sit inside to eat. We attended the soft-opening and got to try the top dishes except for the BBQ Pork ribs (sold out on day 2 of 3, of course). We had the Char Siu Noodles, Crab Omelette fried rice, and Fried Chicken Nanban. Everything was spectacular as usual. The savory things are the perfect level of flavor without being overwhelming and still feeling clean. The omelette fried rice was a great blend of egg, rice, and other stuff. A bit more crab bits would be nice! The char siu was chewy and tender. The noodles were a plain base so it's advised to add chili peppers to it. The fried chicken had an egg white "dressing" with tiny pieces of dill in it. It added another level of sophistication and taste to an otherwise normal dish. I'm excited to see what other stuff they cook up next as they continue to make an imprint in Chinatown.

Tried their soft opening/Midnight Diner pop-up concept by Laura Hoang. The entryway to their new location is a bit of a bottleneck to an otherwise spacious dining space -- you're supposed to order at the front but it can get bogged down if some people are hanging around waiting to be seated. Although there was an initial delay in placing an order, I was actually very impressed by how quickly their food came out -- 10 minutes for a take-out order, all packed up. Moreover, I'm not sure if this was by design, but I was also impressed by how well all of the items held up in quality while taking it to-go.The Midnight Diner pop-up menu consisted of their take on classic Japanese diner/izakaya items. Among the items I tried, the chicken pot pie croquette was by far the best. It had a much richer flavor than the basic potato croquettes that I'm used to, even more flavorful than the more indulgent crab cream croquettes that you find at some Japanese eateries. The niku udon and fried chicken nanban (karaage style chicken served with tartar sauce) were also good. The agedashi tofu was a miss -- although the other items didn't stray too far from their Japanese origins, the tofu was served with a spicy chili sauce that felt needlessly intense and Chinese-ified. Also a bit pricey at $8 for 4 slices of tofu.I also had their charsiu on egg noodles with yuchoy, a classic dish from their original location and one which I was eager to try ever since seeing it in a video review. The charsiu was indeed very good, tender and juicy.Overall, a very satisfying meal which went quite smoothly, boding well for their eventual full opening at this location. If only the parking/traffic was better.

WOW, I cannot even begin to describe how much I love this place.I've come here several times over the last year, frequently for their Hainan chicken, but also for their Nasi Lemak popup, and I have never been disappointed by the food. The portions are always generous (always enough for at least 2 meals for me), and the meat to rice ratio is GREAT. They're generous with their meat, and it's prepared so well! The meat is so tender and flavorful, and you can tell that they've spent a lot of time getting the meat right. They sometimes will also have desserts from Laura Hoang, and they are NOT to be missed. At the last Hainan chicken popup during New Year's weekend, she had slices of her passion fruit cream cake, and I'm STILL thinking about it! It was so light, but you could still taste the passion fruit, and it wasn't very sweet. I cannot wait to spend far too much of my monthly food budget at their new restaurant!!
Be the first to ReplyHands down the best hainan chicken.
It comes a sizable portion of chicken, rice, and three sauces. You can also order a side of chicken broth which healed the soul. The mushroom chow fun was also really delicious - it had a variety of mushroom. Everything is so flavorful and had great textures. Service is unparalleled, they were so kind and helpful. When I went back to the counter for a second order to go (because it was that good), he even remembered my name!
Be the first to ReplyPearl River deli is something special.
The pork bun is an absolute must. The combo of sweet and spicy can't be beat.Chow fun was tasty, and the mapo tofu had a perfect kick of spice without being overly greasyApparently the thing to get is the hainan chicken, as some say it's the best in LA. . I'll have to come back and try that.

Absolute yes! If you're in Chinatown LA, give this place a visit, but go early if you can! You can tell how much of a hit this place is since half the board gets crossed out the later you go in the day. I went on a Sunday at around noon and my food had a 45 minute wait time. There's only three tables in front of the shop to eat at, but there's never really a problem with seating since everybody eats then leaves. A lot of people do plain old take-out as well. My boyfriend got the char siu and I got the hainan chicken so we could try both. They were both SO good. I usually don't like to eat meat a lot since it can turn out really dry for me, especially hainan chicken, but their chicken is out of this world. It's super moist and delicious-- I don't know how it looks so clean too! If you get the hainan chicken, don't forget to order the broth on the side. The portions for both dishes were super big. We struggled to finish it all and ended up with a lunch-size portion of hainan chicken left to take home. Super worth the price! I'll definitely give this place a visit whenever I end up in Chinatown LA!

Great food and amazing service! 5 stars!Having grown up in one of NYC's Chinatown, and now living in the West Coast, it's been challenging to satisfy my cravings for high quality Chinese food. My search led me to Los Angeles from San Diego multiple times, a mighty trek if it weren't for the constant heavy traffic. I'm happy to say that I've discovered one of my 'spots' for great food!I had the Hainan Chicken the Roast Pork with Rice, and they're both incredible! The flavor, texture and sauces are on point! I also had the opportunity to try out their chicken broth on the house (thank you Pearl River Deli staff) and loved it!I don't make the drive to L.A. often, but I whenever I do, swinging by PRD is a must!
Be the first to ReplyWe love their yu choy and steamed rice.
Their mapo tofu is flavorful, but there are other menu items I love more. Their chow fun is tasty and re-heats nicely. I tend to over order from here because their food does taste yummy the next day. That's what I suggest you do - order for the next few days from Pearl River Deli and your stomach will thank you. They change their menu regularly with some new items so check on their Instagram account for updates. They will give you parking validation - we got one 20 minute sticker, which wasn't enough, but certainly helpful. There is a bathroom in the middle of the mall which you have to put in a quarter for access. This mall features a lot of yummy food and there are many places you can have a good meal at. While we plan on visiting the other restaurants, we keep on finding ourselves at Pearl River Deli because it's so good.
Be the first to ReplyTheir wonton noodles soup is bomb too.
Also check out their char siu. It's the tender pork neck meat! Their soup broth was made from scratch with kurabota bones. The wontons were authentically made & delicious. It's one of the best in LA in my book.
