I started watching a show called the Great Soul Food Cook-Off, and within fifteen minutes of the first episode I was starving and wanted some. I'd heard of Pearl's, but haven't been there before, and since it's fewer than two miles away and would satiate my craving for southern food we decided to check it out. I was pleased with my experience here.We started the meal with a beignet appetizer, which was huge--I think there were ten beignets. They were yummy, though I wish they'd come with more powdered sugar. They are served with a chocolate sauce, but I prefer the more simple powdered sugar to the chocolate sauce. Still, it was very good.Next was the main course. I ordered the blackened grilled chicken sandwich, unusual for me because I'm not sure I've ever had a chicken sandwich before. It was really good. I wish they had a simple chicken breast entree, because I loved the taste of the chicken. I wasn't sure about the remoulade because it usually (always?) has horseradish, which is terrible, but this was thankfully light on the horseradish; I could just taste a little tang. My partner got the ribs, and both our entrees came with fries (seasoned or plain, and the seasoning was very light which I appreciated). I learned something about myself at Pearl's: Sometimes, at least, I like ribs. I don't know if I've ever eaten ribs--if so, it's been decades--but these were mouth-watering. They had a delicious rub and while I tried it with the accompanying BBQ I liked them much better without it. I actually stole two of the ribs, and I'd even consider ordering this form myself and I'd definitely be willing to order it as a shared meal. The rack of ribs was huge, but the meat was fantastic. Not fatty, nicely tender, and just yummy to eat. The entrees were accompanied by shared sides of collard greens and Brussels sprouts and cauliflower. All things I love. The collard greens were not bad, but I'm just now as I write this review realizing that part of the reason I didn't enjoy them as much as I may have is because we didn't put any hot sauce on them! They even brought out hot sauce with the meal and I was surprised since I didn't think anything we ordered needed hot sauce. Whoops, my bad. I love Brussels sprouts and cauliflower, and this was ok but a little too sweet for me. It has a pepper jelly but I was hoping for a little more heat to balance the sweet. They had creme brûlée on their menu, which is my favorite dessert, and I haven't had it since before the pandemic (while I have made it before, it can be a little labor intensive and I am not sure where my torch went!). So I saved half my entree and sides so I could have at least a few bites. It was very large, but it was unfortunately very disappointing. The whole dessert was served cold--both the filling and the top. I know that restaurants don't make these to order but usually I've had it where the top is caramelized when its ordered. This had been in the cooler for a while, already caramelized. The custard itself tasted good, but the texture seemed a little off to me; perhaps a tiny bit too thick? I can't quite put my finger on it.I'll look forward to having a sazarac here sometime. Next time might give the cornbread a try and the collards again with hot sauce this time! I know we'll eat here again, and they do carry out so perhaps we'll give that a shot. Parking here can probably be tricky at times; there's only three right in front but there's some parking around the corner and down the street. Make sure you don't park in the tow zone during the wrong hours!
