Uninspiring food for extravagant prices !;((
Uninspiring food for outrageous prices. Tartare was 4 tiny bites charged at 45$. I left hungry despite a bill of 560 usd for 3!! Definitely not a Michelin 1 star standard!!!
Be the first to ReplySuper cozy and delicious!
Amazing cozy atmosphere and delicious!!! Such a great place to go in the cold Chicago winter. The fire roasted oysters were awesome! One person at our table was nervous and never had oysters before and is now a convert! We ordered the turbot- yum, squash -yum, cod and octopus. All had great flavors and the portions were big. Tasty wine list and also great service. Only drawback was the dessert that had anchovy something… yuck. Easy to get to and parking was plentiful too. Definitely will go back and worth the stars!
Be the first to ReplyDisappointment. Would not return. Not like other Michelin stars :(
An unfortunate experience. Echoing some prior reviews, not sure what is going on at the front of the house. Staff is either untrained or at best very undertrained. I must admit that it is shocking that they were awarded a star. This is our 5th Michelin starred restaurant this year (2 in Paris, 1 in New York and 1 in Amsterdam all 1 or 2, no 3-stars sigh) and is also the worst dining experience of 2022. Like other tables in these comments, we were left staring at our hands for 45 min while our server wandered the small venue like a deer in headlights. Our wait staff was exclusively young, pretty women with at most basic knowledge of the food and drink. The food (multi course tasting plus á la carte add ons) when it finally arrived was pleasing but again lacked the overall ambience that one would expect from a restaurant at this level. Hopefully this was an off night since it was clear two other couples around us had similar experiences. Cost for two with wine $300 plus tip (dessert and coffee was given on the house but not enough to salvage the situation). TL;DR. To be avoided.
Be the first to ReplyNot like the food we ate in Porto but excellent nonetheless
After a trip to Porto and Lisbon this spring we fill in love with area and decided to try this area. As we did not frequent upscale dining on the trip ( as we compared Francesinha's and enjoyed Super Bok beer) this was nothing like our trip. We still enjoyed the experience immensely. We were seated in the rear of the restaurant across from a woodburning stove (which was a bit hot), but had great conversation with the servers and enjoyed all of the dishes.

Porto provides a tasting menu as well as ala carte. There are a variety of seating options, with the atrium area providing a more vibrant experience. You can be seated at a bar, to ostensibly watch the chefs working and interact with them, but that was not happening at the dimly lit front of the restaurant, so we asked to be reseated. We also felt that being able to see the beauty of our food was an essential part of the dining experience. Our initial waiter was informative, but kept forgetting some elements of the dishes. We also felt that our subsequent waiter would have been much better for guidance as to our wine choice. The chef we did get to talk to was quite charming, and clearly concerned about utilizing high quality ingredients, and to utilize all possible parts of the foodstuffs they acquire. On the whole, a lovely experience, with well-thought out tasteful seafood dishes.

We had dinner the restaurant in June 25th in a party of 4. We were very excited about it, but our experience was very bad. Overall staff was untrained or in a hurry. Also overall food not great that nice with very expensive prices. (We did a la carte). Also, took us 1h to get the first serve of any food. We complained to staff that answered: “this is part of our experience”. For sure not what expect from a Michelin Start venue.

In the end it was both a lovely experience and a bit over-reaching, It was quite long drive from our hotel and unfortunately they did not have a record of our reservation. Luckily there was space for us at the bar, Special shoutout to our server Teaghen who was friendly and also had spent some time (or maybe even was from) the Tampa Bay Area. So this is Iberian/Portuguese/Galician/Andalusian - all the things. Very heavy on seafood and not afraid to serve the famous canned items you can find from this region (and also order to be delivered to your home). We enjoyed all the dishes and it was challenging and adventurous though out. I felt as though my palate needed a little bit of a break for the strong textures and flavors presented. I would say my favorite ended up being the matrimonial de Anchoas. Also, excellent wine list available.
Be the first to ReplyHorrible experience
The interior of the restaurant is pretty, but that is all. I invited couple friends to join us for dinner, and I was embarrassed for my choice. The food portions were so small, that we went to eat at another restaurant, after spending $500 on dinner. Two people were asked to share one scallop:) As only two scallops were served for four guests! On the top of the miniature portions, the food was extremely salty. They pretty much only serve wine. There is no valet parking and the entrance to the building is confusing. The back dining room of the restaurant was extremely hot. Staff were constantly walking outside to smoke. I can't believe this is Michelin star restaurant. Save your money and go somewhere else for a better experience.
Be the first to ReplyGreat style but sadly bland food
Very disappointed for a Michelin star restaurant. We had such high hopes but sadly the food was poorly seasoned and bland in flavor.
The amuse bouche was an almost flavorless consommé
The ham, of course, was amazing
The anchovies were of exceptional quality, but served on a soft and stale tasting chickpea cracker, which took away entirely from the dish
The broth served with the percebes has not flavor and added nothing to the dish
The squab was excellent and had a great sauce
The carrots, which the server pushed us to have, were so bland and served with an unpleasant foam that overpowered anything else. The parsnip puree was split and again had no seasoning.
Every course came with such a lengthy and scripted description, the food got cold
I will say that they did adjust off the items we did not care for, but I would not return I am afraid. We actually left and went elsewhere to eat again
Wonderful restaurant, but fell slightly short
First of all the space is wonderful and all the staff were extremely professional and accommodating.
We came here on New Year's Eve which meant there was a special tasting menu. While some things on the menu were wonderful, others were outright disappointing (foie gras and langoustine ball - the foie gras was totally overpowering and since it's so rich, there was just way too much of it compared to the other components & flavors), which was surprising (and not pleasantly so).
The service was phenomenal and our waited was great at wine recommendations and being present whenever anything was needed.
We would still not go back, because the discrepancy of what a meal costs you here and what we'd expect for that (all dishes to be at least good, better yet - great) was simply too great.
Stunning Food and Presentation
Absolutely amazing dinner in my 3rd visit to Porto. Amuse bouche left me laughing (literally) it was so good... especially the sardine bite. Oysters XO provided perfect oysters presented perfectly. Autumn tasting menu includes the classic uni on toast (an elevated version, of the gilded lily variety) plus some new hits, with the surf and turf standing out. Wine list is replenished with some stellar selections and by far the best Portuguese selection I have seen outside of Portugal. Service is attentive, gracious, kind and very well informed. This is my favorite restaurant in Chicago, by far... and they deserve a 2nd star!

We had a great experience at Porto. I generally don’t dine at high cuisine restaurants but this one was different. The food and especially the service were amazing!
Be the first to ReplyVery good food, disdainful service
We had dinner at Porto this evening with high expectations. The service was at best indifferent and at times disdainful. My wife has a number of food allergies. This was treated as a great inconvenience. When we asked about one of us having the tasting the menu, this was also treated as an annoyance. I expect far better service from a michelin starred restaurant. The food was very good but not outstanding and was served cooler than our preference. We were neither guided through the menu nor were we provided with a wine list or told there were more options than the small sampling of wines by the glass. Overall, a very disappointing experience. We will not return and will advise our friends to avoid. There are many good restaurants in Chicago. I am not certain what the Michelin team saw on their visits, but we were very disappointed by the experience.
Be the first to ReplyWest Town fine dining without pretensions
Porto opened in October, 2020 and gained a Michelin star in 2021. I read about it at the time but its specialty of Spanish and Portuguese conservas, or tinned seafood, brought to mind expensive tuna, served out of the can on a plate. It just didn’t sound appealing. Boy, was I wrong.
The chefs take fresh fish and seafood flown in specially from Galicia, in Spain, and Portugal, plus those conservas. These ingredients may be served fresh, smoked, coal fired, or pickled, combined with emulsions and foams derived from the liquids in the cans. They add tiny sprigs of seaweed, minuscule vegetable morsels, even edible flower petals to create exquisitely refined dishes. And there is Iberico ham, the wild boar that’s rarely found on menus.
We arrived for a 6:45 weekday dinner reservation. The room was about ½ full. We were seated at the chefs’ island, a long rectangle dominating the c of the room. Blue velvet chairs are placed on three sides of the island and you can watch the staff at work, cooking and plating, with concentration and precision. There are also tables set alongside the windows and a second room called “the atrium” in the back that we didn’t investigate.
Our waiter Jonathan introduced himself. After studying the menu, we had no idea how to go about ordering a satisfying meal, so we threw up our hands and ordered the 7-course tasting menu ($115 pp and everyone in the party must order it). This turned out to be a wise decision as it gave us the chance to sample what they consider their best dishes. Not only that, but the tasting dinner included a couple dishes I would never have chosen but that turned out to be stand-outs: the uni conserva on toasted brioche and the oyster & cava. The 6th dish, dry-aged Iberico ham with a dollop of ham tartare, was served rare and was downright beefy, dressed with a sauce that recalled a bordelaise. I asked Jonathan to choose a glass of rose wine and he came back with a Portuguese one that was new to me and quite delicious.
We were introduced to the 2 female chefs at work and they were happy to have us observe, served us a couple of dishes themselves by placing them on the counter in front of us, explained them, and asked us our opinions after we consumed them. They seemed genuinely pleased by our interest and compliments.
The tasting dinner for 2, with tax, drinks and a 3.5% processing fee for using a credit card came to $283, before tip. Expensive but not unreasonable considering the high quality of the ingredients and the nature of the meal. This was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and we look forward to a future visit to further explore the menu.
Metered street parking was readily available nearby.
Great food and service
Great Spanish tapas served by an enthusiastic waiter in a uniquely different but interesting dining room. The food is excellent, including jamon iberico, flash fried oysters, grilled octopus, and turbot. The wine list is extensive and possibly overwhelming for anyone not intimately familiar with wines of the Iberian peninsula (like myself), but the waiter pointed me to a reasonably good and moderately priced choice. The prices are off the charts, especially considering the small tapas portions, particularly the tiny flecks of jamon, priced at $39? I agree with an earlier reviewer that the credit card fee of 3% adds insult to injury when customers routinely pay $300 for dinner for two. Is that additional charge really necessary? I found the seating by the bar to be rather uncomfortable, with seat cushions that are very soft, low and deep, with no back support of any kind, making a long meal quite difficult, especially given the height of the table. Also, the wide and bulky base of the tables is not comfortable for anyone with legs and feet that might like to occupy space beneath the table. Still, overall, a good experience.
Be the first to ReplyAn excelente experience all around!
What an excellent experience. All around great, from the service to the ambiance. Not to mention the great food, amazing presentation and flavors l!
Be the first to ReplyStunning tasting meal.
Expensive place. I wish more Americans would at least wear long pants when spending this much money on a meal. Porto is more 'Port' meaning fish than Portuguese cuisine. The four of us had the tasting menu. FYI: To get the tasting menu all of your party must order it. It was $115 per person. I really think it's definitely worth it. The pacing of the dishes is nicely done as is the service. I would list what we had but it probably changes every week depending on the product they get. We were there about 3 hours seated in the back room which is very nice given the skylights and high ceiling. It's bright and airy and quiet which is something we appreciated. Conversation can be had easily. The mixed drinks are very reasonably priced for instance a margarita was only $6. Everything was artfully presented and memorable and tasty. Not a place I would come to often given the price but I'm glad I came. FYI: There is a 3.5% Credit Card Processing Surcharge which I think is a bit much given the cost of the meal. To avoid it I guess you'd have to pay cash or use a debit card. And who does that? I believe California has prohibited this practice.

Portions - small. Food - very good with good appeal. Service - above and beyond. However, charging good paying customers 3.5% credit card fee is very wrong. Add it to your menu prices, if you have to but don’t insult your good customers please.
