This is a busy beautiful spot with a nice view and good food. It was my second visit...the last time was nine years ago! We both enjoyed our entrees - the market Greens and the Birria Torta. I love this style of French fries. My husband loved the San Diego Lemonade and for me, it was a perfect day for bubbles. I would recommend this spot if you are in Balboa. The outside seating is even nicer but you may encounter a wait.

Had their restaurant week prefix, an extra app, and a dessert, everything I had was pretty bland. Food wise everything was pretty underwhelming, the stand outs were oddly their soup of the day and the dessert I had which was their crème brûlée. My entree of mushroom risotto that I was very excited for was pretty flavorless. I've eaten here several times over the years of living in SD, you really come here for the location and not the food, it's beautiful atmosphere but that's really the selling point is the ambiance. Service was good enough, always tip your servers even if the experience wasn't perfect, unless they were outright it rude then there is no reason to not tip them. They not only serve your every need but they pay to serve you, they literally pay money from your tip to serve you.

Thanks to Sofia, Operations Manager who reached out to resolve the concern in my review. I am glad to know that they do take corrective actions within their team to ensure issues won't happen in the future. Restaurant Chef and manager were informed of the situation.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic experience! Our 1st time trying this restaurant.
We tried Restaurant week menu and it was delicious. We sat outside and it was so beautiful and peaceful. Ricky our waitress was so helpful and gave us excellent service. He was so helpful and attentive. He even told us about wine night on Tuesday's,,,I will try wine Tuesday for sure. The food came out quickly and Delicious. I got the chicken BLT, the fries were delicious. My girlfriend had the fig, strawberry, candied walnuts, arugula and fig Salad. It was delicious as well. The German cake was outstanding. I'm impressed. Great customer service and delicious food. A must try!!! You can't beat the beautiful area. Love it!!!

Be the first to ReplyFabulous restaurant in the heart of the Balboa Park!
Fabulous restaurant in the heart of the Balboa Park! Spacious with great interior and even nicer outdoor seating with a view and fountain side!!! Staff is very friendly with even the bus boy introducing himself to customers! I liked that as it added a touch of classiness! Menu is pretty good food wise and drink wise but I only had a salad. Cobb salad is absolutely great! I loved it. I asked for different dressing and that was easily accommodated! All in all - this is a great place to meet friends for drinks or dinner, or have even larger celebration!!!

By far the most gorgeous surrounding in San Diego and our go to place when seeking a peaceful place to dine and walk around. Made a reservation as these are one of the busier places and have eaten here over time and time again. We were greeted with a friendly smile and were welcomed to our table. We enjoy dining both indoor and outdoor, outdoor is our preferred but can be busy and a longer wait even with a reservation. We started with the Prado crackers and the hummus, their crackers are crispy and light. The pressed arugula salad is a constant order as we love the dressing and the strawberries added to it. The grilled Kobe burger is another staple we always order and is the juiciest restaurant style burger. The mahi mahi burger is also deliciously made. And of course we ended the meal with a crème brûlée and tres leches. Love this restaurant as it plays so many memoirs in our life.

We found The Prado after checking out the Air & Space Museum. Step into this picturesque hacienda near historical galleries and showrooms of Balboa Park! My party and I were sat in the balcony which was beautiful to have lunch. The minus one star is simply because of the 5% service charge on the bill. Food was delicious and fresh. Our waitress was attentive and bubbly. I'll return for more!
Be the first to ReplyThe quality of the food at The Prado has plummeted.
We started with the cauliflower and corn appetizer which was great. My husband had the paella which was tasteless and the rice was overcooked. I ordered the Pasta alla Norma and it was lukewarm. I reluctantly sent it back to be reheated and was told it would be tossed in a pan. The food arrived warmer but still not hot. Oddly, the plate was hotter than the food. The pasta was also bland and tasteless. The service was top notch and attentive but it couldn't make up for the poor quality of the food. At the prices they're charging, the food should be better. It feels as though The Prado doesn't need to try at all because they've got the built-in business of the theatre patrons who don't have many nearby choices for dinner and tourists who aren't going to be coming back anyway. Too bad. It used to be a place for a nice meal.
Be the first to ReplyThe Prado restaurant at Balboa Park was a pleasant surprise.
Now getting to Balboa park and finding a parking spot is a pain but if you get lucky then that is the hardest part. We wanted a sit down restaurant and this is the only one I think, so off we go. The restaurant is nice and really beautiful inside. The service was friendly and the food was good. It was a little bit pricy but we didn't mind. I got a shrimp cobb salad and my husband got a chicken sandwich. We also got the ice tea that was really good. We will definitely go back if we visit Balboa park, but it's always so crowded down there that I usually don't go often.
Be the first to ReplyWe absolutely LOVED the Prado restaurant.
Not only a beautiful space and great service ( Hayley) but we agreed it was the best fish sandwich ( Mahi Mahi) we'd ever had!

Some San Diego natives recommended I go here, saying it is the best in the park. I decided to take my grandmother here for her birthday lunch, since she was visiting San Diego. We quickly realized it was a tourist-focused spot, as there wasn't much to choose from on the menu. And what was there to choose from ended up being bland and not worth the expensive prices. The scenery was great and the staff were friendly. I just think that you could find better food to spend your money on if you go down the street or across the freeway to Little Italy. [Note: this is a review I've been meaning to post since November, so the food may have gotten better since then? Maybe I'll post an update.]
Be the first to ReplyAfter walking around the park & taking in everything it had
After walking around the park & taking in everything it had to offer, we worked up an appetite & were glad we came here. I love the upscale yet casual atmosphere & the music playing in the background. Our waitress, Wendy was very hospitalbe & left nothing to chance. We were so taken away bty the fish tacos, that all three of us ordered them. The tortuillas were fresh & my favorite, corn. The fish was fresh & tdnder in a wonderfully sweet & spicy mango habanaro salsa. The cabbage was crisp & the beans were some of the best. For dessert, my uncle & I split the German chocolate cake which was dense with coconut, walnuts, & dark chocolate. Round it off with a Prado Blond or wine & you will not be disappointed. So, for wonderful food in an upscale yet casual atmosphere & attentive service, Prado cannot be beat. Keep up the good work guys.

We stopped in on a rainy day before visiting the beautiful Balboa park. The service I would rate at 1 star the food a 2. It's really pricey and small portions. Our server came to take our order and bring our check and that was it. He never brought out glasses of ice that were requested or refilled drinks, along with one of our orders being made incorrectly. When this was brought to his attn he just said oops. No I'm sorry let me re make item or anything. Very odd response or lack there of. I would not recommend there are some cute little cafes & other places to go instead.
Be the first to ReplyThe wine, the service and the ambience is five star.
They really need to improve on their menu. They advertise gf and say oh, it without out the sourdough bread, lol!! their french fries are so so, their ranch sauce was super watered down, they don't have enough options on the menu. They're not very flexible about the menu. And their food just isn't good.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful setting and fantastic cocktails.
Food was fantastic. All three of us loved our choices, even on the limited menu mid-day.

We've been here numerous times over the years and always enjoyed the food & experience with the exception of today, feeling a huge decline in the food. The "put together your own fish tacos" were barely edible & I'm a big fish taco person. Dry fish, boring extras & beans proved to be unexciting. My husband's fish sandwich was equally overcooked & boring. Very good service, beautiful decor as always. Additionally, it's become so touristy & you feel so rushed as though they want to turn your table quickly....which they do!

BEWARE OF THE 5% SURCHARGE: The food was pretty good, especially when you're hungry. The one star rating is for the surprise of being charged a 5% surcharge. I was curious as to what this charge was. The server stated the owner put the surcharge in to help pay for the increase in wages for the kitchen hands. I really wish they had a big sign in the front stating this or the front hostesses should have mentioned this before seating us. I think I wouldn't have felt the way I did at the end when I was paying. The server could have mentioned it as well, but didn't. It felt like they hid this fact thinking you wouldn't look at the receipt and just pay it. I really hope that the kitchen hands are getting this rather going into the owner's pocket. This is some shady sh*t restaurant owners are pulling off on customers. Will not be returning here in the future.
Be the first to ReplyThe soups and salads were tasty and fresh.
The service was excellent. The parking is the challenger.
Be the first to ReplyFinally got to visit this place and was well pleased.
Had a reservation, showed up late after having a traffic violation. :-) Service was attentive and the view was beautiful from our outdoor table.Food came out promptly and delicious. Loved the crab dip, pate, lentil soup, seared prime beef sushi roll, the flan.Everything was great from soup to nuts and for sure will return and have reservations again.
Be the first to ReplyWhat happened to this place? I used to dine here regularly
What happened to this place? I used to dine here regularly in the pre-COVID days. In those times the lavash crackers and hummus were free with the meal. Not anymore. Now they cost $5.95. My husband and I decided to dine here for dinner prior to a Thursday night show. The selection of entrees was surprisingly limited and not too appetizing - "Red Beans and Rice" risotto? Mary's "chicken pot pie"? Come on Prado. I went with the roasted winter squash fettuccine. That was a mistake. It was so bland, it needed much more seasoning. Aesthetically it was also very unappealing. The description of the dish failed to say that the vegetables listed were puréed into a "sauce". It was presented as brownish-green gruel atop fettuccine noodles topped with a small brick of braised bacon. The bacon was the highlight of the dish, I'm not gonna lie. But there was no color on this dish, which was disappointing. It just looked limp and drab. When the waiter came to take our order he said the meal came with a baguette and asked if we wanted one. We said yes! Little did we know we'd be charged $2.50 for it. My husband ordered an apricot sidebar martini which ended up being $20!!!! And sadly the service was pretty slow, which was a bit of a surprise since the restaurant was not even close to being full. We got seated right away in a relatively empty wing of the restaurant. This place is just waaaay overpriced now. I don't mind paying a mint for a high end restaurant with amazing food every once in awhile. But the Prado has taken a downturn, charging high end prices for poor quality food and poor service. We came away feeling "nickel and dimed" to a staggering degree. COVID really hit them hard I suppose. Sadly we won't be returning. There are so many other restaurants out there that have much better food that aren't nearly as expensive. Or, if they are expensive, you get what you pay for. At the Prado you're paying for the tourist attraction, not the restaurant itself. What a shame.
Be the first to ReplyI visited The Prado at Balboa Park on a busy Saturday
I visited The Prado at Balboa Park on a busy Saturday afternoon around 2pm. Despite the crowds, the staff was able to seat us after a brief wait. However, things took a strange turn when we were offered outside seating that was directly in the sun. When we requested alternative seating in the shade, the hostess seemed to panic and disappeared for several minutes, leaving us standing there feeling bewildered. When she returned, she simply said that she couldn't do anything about it and offered to seat us inside. While I was taken aback by her lack of ability to handle the situation, we were hungry and decided to take the indoor table nearest to the window.Thankfully, our server was wonderful, and we enjoyed the food we ordered, although I must say that the pricing was quite high. If you're on a budget, this might not be the best option for you. Overall, our first experience at The Prado was good, but I would recommend that the management train their hostess staff on how to handle issues. Simply disappearing and then offering a one-line response that doesn't address the customer's needs is not acceptable. Hopefully, with better training, The Prado can become an even better destination for delicious food in a beautiful setting.

Food poisoning from the Prado via the White Seabass, it was the only meal I ate that day other than crackers from my house. 36hours into this food poisoning still can't keep food down or in, have a fever of 102, had to miss two days of work and can't leave the bathroom. They have not even called back once my wife informed them of what happened. I will never return to this establishment. Spending nearly $300 on dinner to get the worst case of food poisoning in my entire life is blasphemy. The nurses hotline said that if it persists I'm gonna need antibiotics because it would be an extreme case of bacteria from food borne Illness. Thanks Prado!Edit: Checked the other 1 star reviews, guess I'm not the only one who had issues with the food! You have been warned.
Be the first to ReplyThe soup was delicious.
And the service was excellent. The martini was even better. I love the inside design of the restaurant. Great for lunch out or for a romantic dinner. Balboa park is so nice for a day trip. So much to see . I went to the museum of Art . The ducks are beautiful in the large pond. A must see for everyone. I recommend going to San Diego finest spot.
