Providence was the restaurant I was looking forward to the most during my LA Michelin food tour. After months of research trying to find the best restaurants in LA, no matter where I looked, everyone seemed to agree that Providence was at the top of the list, and it shows as it is one of the few 2 Michelin star restaurants around the area. This ultimately meant that I had exceedingly high expectations for this place, and while all the food was amazing, it fell just a bit short of the mark in providing me with the complete experience I had hoped for.Starting with the looks of the place, you could tell you were walking into a fancy fine dining restaurant. A bit too dark for my liking, but still very sleek, elegant, and contemporary throughout. Ambiance, check. Service was a hit-or-miss. I actually liked the people who cleaned up our tables/plates over our actual waiter. There was just this weird, awkward vibe I got from him. He just seemed completely detracted and uninterested in us, and he only came by once to ask us how the food was. On the other hand, everyone else was great. As soon as we finished our plate, there would always be someone behind you to help clean up after you and present you with your next course shortly after. I even had a funny incident where I accidently stained my dress shirt, and one waiter immediately ran over to ask me what he could do to help clean it off. So service overall, semi-check. Now for the food. Overall, Providence offers the most imaginative interpretations on the highest quality seafoods that you can find: lobster, oyster, caviar, king crab, etc. Every dish was unique, flavorful, and decadent, and that's coming from someone who's not the biggest fan of seafood. What I can say for sure is that Providence has one of the most artistic plating I've ever seen. Every plate was just a work of art. So eloquent and aesthetic, but I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. Some standout courses were the entire hors d'oeuvres course (appetizers), Norwegian king crab, and the A5 wagyu. Cocktails were terrific as well. Great balance of alcohol and sweetness for two people who aren't drinkers. However, when I take a look at the price per person ($275), I can't help but just think to myself: was this worth it? Don't get me wrong, each and every course was extraordinary, but there's only about 7 main courses if you don't count appetizers and dessert. Portion sizes were small too, so if it wasn't for the fact that I ate beforehand, I would have probably been still a bit hungry afterwards. With two cocktails and the wagyu supplement ($30), plus tips, the total came out to almost $800. To me, for a price of that caliber, I expected a little more if I'm paying that much, whether if it's offering a larger tasting menu or providing better service. In short, Providence is the perfect place for first-time guests who want to experience the highest level of fine dining. After dining at Kato the night before, even though it had only one Michelin star, I thought Kato was more worth the money and provided a much better food experience altogether. I think I can say to others that I'm glad I got the chance to try this place out, but this will be a one and done type of thing for me.
