🤢 2/5 - Disappointing first visit

A first visit for myself and my partner. We were told when we booked the table for 5.30 that we would have to vacate by 8pm that was fine however upon arriving at the restaurant we were told we had the table until 7.30pm the table we were shown to was next to the stairs leading to the toilets, as the restaurant was almost empty we asked to sit at a window table, this was granted but we were told we would have this table for 15 mins less than the other one. My partner was disappointed with the wine list especially the choice of whites but he made a selection, we also ordered the food as the same time knowing our time was limited. I ordered duck and pork rillettes and my partner the cuttlefish we did ask the waitress what one of the ingredients was in tne cuttlefish dish she didn’t know or said she didn’t know how to describe it but would get back to us with an answer, she didn’t. The wine we ordered was not available, we were told there’s not a bottle in the building, we chose another which arrived 30 minutes after we’d been seated along with the sourdough bread. Starters were interesting the cuttlefish was good, however the rillettes were just a mound of shredded greasy meat dumped onto a plate with gherkins and little toast to eat it with, I did have some bread left which I used with it, the texture was quite unpleasant much too fatty and greasy to enjoy, I couldn’t help thinking it could have been quenelled or at least moulded in a ring … I really don't want to say what the dollop looked like. On from starters to the main we had both ordered the Guinea fowl pie with sides, on arrival the pie looked good however when the pastry was broken into the biggest disappointment ever … I have never seen such a watery liquid in a pie the filling was sparse it was more like a watery soup with a pastry lid, then I realised why we have been given a soup spoon it’s the only way you could eat it. I didn’t know Jeremy Lee was the chef there but I did recognise his pictures from various TV stints … looking online at a chicken pie recipe of his it looked far superior to what he was serving in the restaurant. Service was very poor, no filling of glasses, not even asked how the main courses was. We sat with empty plates in front of us for a good fifteen minutes, when someone eventually came over to our table to fill wine glasses there was little left in the bottle, he asked how things were and my partner said no good but he would speak to the manager, to which the man said, “I am the manager” he listened as we relayed our disappointing experience and was extremely apologetic he offered to take the wine off the bill and encouraged us to choose dessert also on the house, I had a creme caramel with orange sauce it was ok nothing remarkable and my partner choose the chocolate dessert which he enjoyed. A very disappointing experience but it was somewhat redeemed by the managers intervention, he also removed the service charge from the bill which we would have asked to be taken off if he had not done so. He assured us that the service we had received was not typical to the restaurant and hoped we would revisit, sadly, it’s a case of once bitten twice shy we will not return as there are far too many better restaurants in London to choose from.
