Small and intimate place.
Friendly owner and staff. We had the chef's tasting menu with wine pairings. Wine was paired perfectly. I especially like the wine with the foie gras. Will definitely come back when in town.

From the lack of a website and paper register it can safely be said that Restaurant Walter Bauer is something of a throwback, a single star from Michelin suggesting competent cooking that is no-frills and heartfelt.Named for its Chef whose Cuisine leans French by way of Vienna, all prepared properly and presented professionally, it is atop white linen that Bread is served almost immediately while Wine proves nearly essential thanks to frequent reminders by waiters.Eventually opting for Sparkling Chardonnay out of Niederösterreich, its bright Citrus not ideal for an amuse of Austrian Bologna but well-suited to Foie Gras and Oranges, course two consisted of Pumpkin Risotto decorated in Green Beans with dollops of Curd Cheese.Receiving Olive Oil with no explanation alongside the Rice, plus a pile of magazines to pass the time with no Wi-Fi, it was under vaulted ceilings surrounded by pink walls that beautifully-cooked Lamb arrived next with Polenta, Artichokes and a single curl of Bell Pepper.€69 for 3-courses, plus €4 for Bread and €16 for "Schmarrn," Dessert riffs on Viennese shredded Pancakes but misses the mark in portion-size and structure with the lone saving grace some poached Pears and velvety Chocolate Ice Cream.

A small restaurant, beautifully decorated, hidden off on a side street, but not hard to find.I think they got a little carried away with the giant portion of fois gras appetizer. And the dessert, an apple/bread casserole was extremely good.I did feel a bit sorry for the servers, carrying a stack of four wine lists to the table - each one seemed to weigh about 4kg. But I still prefer the wine list as a book, instead of the iPad wine lists that are becoming ubiquitous. Hopefully, after Covid, we'll return back... but I doubt it.I'll return soon.2021 09 22. M1.

My husband and I went here tonight looking forward to a Michelin star experience. We arrived promptly for a 6 pm rsvp but were questioned on whether we had one or not - thankfully I had charged my iPhone and was able to pull up the confirmation email. We were seated right away but there seemed to be a slight chill in the air that we did not belong. Let's be clear this was our 6th evening and 6th tasting menu planned and we are very easy going - bring us your tasting menu with wine pairings and keep us hydrated with water! Food was really good and I wish I could rate food separately from service as I would give food 5 stars. This seems to be a hangout for locals which is awesome but not so great for those who are just visiting. The lieberkass sausage amuse Bouche was terrific and the Foie gras starter was delish! We added the soup of the day which was a corn soup and was fantabulous! Then we moved to sea bass - very tasty - the venison ravioli was very good! We were clicking along until the last course - we were served our last wine and then waited at least 20 minutes for the final course to arrive -- I had to ask for more wine and our water glasses were empty -- had to ask for more water which seems very odd that it went unnoticed! The last course was good -- short rib - mine was a bit fatty but tasty. We were presented with dessert menu just in case. At this point we were a bit turned off and ready to settle up. The bill arrived and for a Michelin starred place not crazy expensive BUT I did not like the fact that they charged us 28 euros for water and charged us for an extra glass of wine during the 20 plus minutes we waited with nothing. To me these are the things that separate a normal bistro from a Michelin spot...also strange that the owner/manager never came by to ask how we enjoyed ourselves -- if you speak German I think you would enjoy!! For those of us who do not -- thinking you may want to go to one of the other several spots in Vienna -- may want to check some of my other reviews - cheers!

Let me start with a compliment to the waiter who was nice and polite. The stuck up owner in a suit is obviously prejudice and dislikes Americans. That was obvious from our first interaction. As he catered to the German speaking older clientele we had to wait and wait for water. He was giving us a treatment like we were lower class citizens from the minute we sat down. The wine list was extensive and of course just coming back from visiting Tuscany we ordered bottle of Brunello di Montalcino. Salad was good and so was the seafood dish- my lamb on the other hand was tough and stringy so I asked the waiter to send it back. The non-liking Americans owner comes back and starts arguing with me like I do not know what I am talking about- I have had lamb recently in Sienna, Milan, London, Laguna Beach, Seattle and Sidney and this pathetic excuse for a restaurant owner is talking to me like I am American who eats McDonalds and too young to be there anyway.Needless to say we were disgusted paid and left. I should have known that since this place is NOT open on weekends (who does that in a restaurant business??) that he was not catering to the tourist or preferably anyone non-German speaking. Turns out that he caters to the government officials during the week- G what a surprise.....Best part about this is- I am Czech nationality but he was too ignorant to realize that.Stay clear of this place as nothing good will happen here.
