A treasure in the Mission
We have a new favorite for our Wednesday Date Night. The place was so busy and the staff is so friendly while being totally professional. Our waiter suggested the Prix Fixe so that we would get a chance to try all their "Greatest Hits" so that is what we did. We added a plate of sushi to start which was some of the freshest fish I have had. There was a selection of wasabi, mustard, and a sauce for the fresh scallop that was so good. The Yakitori Tsukune was so tender and flavorful it could be a meal on its own. My favorite was the Mabodofu Don which is what I am definitely ordering the next time we go. My husband enjoyed it all - especially watching the owner hand prepare the Udon noodles we had in our Kake Udon.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food, overwhelmingly loud music
I’d been wanting to go to Rintaro ever since a friend raved about it some months ago. I wish I could rave but being there felt more like being IN a rave. The music was excruciatingly loud such that we couldn’t hear people sitting next to us never mind on the other side of the table. We asked for it to be turned down which it was but the difference was negligible. When I asked again, the server said she’d already asked them and that she wasn’t in charge of the music. I could go on with details but suffice to say that the music was so loud that it was hard to enjoy the excellent food. If you like Hard Rock Cafe-level sound, you’ll love this. If not, bring earplugs. No joke. And order the reasonably priced and delicious tasting menu.

A bit out of town but we got an Uber there and back no problem. Nice setting. Friendly staff. We went for the tasting menu as you got a bit of everything. It was really interesting. We don’t usually have Japanese food so the textures and flavours weren’t something we were familiar with but it was great to try something new. Loved the sashimi and the katsu.
Be the first to ReplyAverage for non-average price
Went for fixed menu. Food was average. Sashimi was good but rest was average at best. Service was average but then when the check comes you get forced to a non-optional 20% tip on top of the 5% SF service charge.

We went here with friends who were visiting. We went with the tasting menu, which is a great way to go. The food was great and we had saki and champagne at various points. My favorite dish was desert, a gelatin dish that was beautifully presented and tasted great!

I’ll keep this experience in mind for a long time! Food is so fresh and well prepared, service is warm and friendliness, and the restaurant itself is very cosy and comfortable! Great spot!

Be the first to ReplyGood, But Pricey For The Quality
The Food
Returning to Rintaro for a second time. First time I got to experience the lunch menu, but this time for the dinner menu. My friend and I ordered their
- San Ten Mori
- Yakitori Tsukune
- Yakitori Sori
- Yakitori Momo Sansho
- Mabodofu Don
The San Ten Mori is a sashimi plate with San Diego bigeye tuna, konbu-cured S.F. halibut, baja kanpachi and Half Moon Bay wasabi. The halibut and kanpachi was good, but the tuna was a bit lacking. For the price, I was expecting a better cut of tuna. The yakitori were pretty good, I enjoyed the Sori (oyster) and Momo Sansho (thigh) more than the Tsukune (minced) though. The Mabodofu (or mapo tofu), is meh, not really worth it in my opinion.
The Miscellaneous
Rintaro is along the neighborhood streets, so you will need to find some street parking (or you can test your luck with Foods Co parking lot). The restaurant has two sections, one outside, one inside. The interior design and decor is quite interesting, it does give off a traditional Japan vibe. Their staff were sincere and professional. The service is good, with reasonable order time. They have a variety of items on their menu, from sashimi to yakitori, to other Japanese dishes. I haven't got a chance to try, but they also have sake, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic drinks. When you choose to come, you should already know it is more of a classy place with a classy price. But with the high price, the quality is a bit lacking in my opinion.
What is all the Hype about
Ok I know this place has a lot of buzz and had been written up but to our party it is just another average Japanese restaurant. I just did not think the food was great at all. It is a set menu that might change but on this night some dishes were better than others. Sashimi plate was adequate but did not blow me away as anything special with smoked SF king salmon and a few other eclectic sushi, It was a Kisetsu set dinner and I think I am just not a big fan of what the cook offered. Not even worth explaining the dishes in any detail. Probably would not return, Saki was very expensive as well.
Be the first to Replymy fourth visit to this gem
Well it’s my fourth visit. That must tell you something. Every time I’ve enjoyed it. Mostly for lunch but once for dinner. On the more expensive end but not outrageously so. I really love the lunches. They have “sets”. That is a main dish with 4 or 5 side dishes. Very common in japan. Each side is 4 or 5 bites of a dish. So you get great variety. The lunch is very satisfying for portion size. Planning my next visit in a week or so.
Be the first to ReplyNot what I expected.
I was expecting something very different so may that’s why I didn’t enjoy it that much. The food was just average in taste and selection, I liked the dessert. Just average over all.

I absolutely loved this place. We were a party of three and shared a carafe of sake. Our waitress let us sample a few so we knew we would like what we got. She was very helpful in our selection. We ordered about 6 plates to share. They were all delicious. The noodles!! They are known for their homemade noodles. You must try them. The fried sardines were great as well. I wish I could have tried everything on the menu! Excellent place!
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing - raw chicken
I had been to Rintaro in October 2018 and the food was incredible and the service top notch. Because of this positive experience I encouraged my partner and friends to pay it a visit when we were back in San Francisco in September and unfortunately we were all incredibly disappointed. We had made a booking yet it took 30 mins for us to get a table and in the meantime we were just expected to hover awkwardly in the cold doorway as there was no where else for us to wait. When we did eventually get a table the menu we were given highlighted that the majority of the mains were no longer available which was a real shame. We proceeded to order and the food arrived pretty promptly. One of the dishes was the chicken wings and my partner bit into one only to find that it was completely raw. Given that the food here is not inexpensive we were really shocked that they had allowed raw chicken to be served. We alerted the waiting staff who were extremely apologetic and offered us another portion and stated that they would remove it from the bill. Although this was a kind (and necessary) gesture it didn't go far enough to change our impressions of the food and unfortunately we struggled to eat the rest of the meal as we were worried about the standard of cooking. Such a shame as I had been really looking forward to sharing the experience with my partner and our friends.
Be the first to ReplyGreat experience! Excellent food and service.
We had a wonderful dinner tonight at Rintaro. Our server, Miya, did a great job or guiding us in our selections. The food is excellent. Great flavors! We especially loved the dumplings. The squid salad, chicken and meatball skewers, goyza dumplings and the tofu rice entree dish were my favorites.
We will definitely come back when we are in San Francisco.
