Rioja Denver Reviews from The Last Year

I stopped in here for an early dinner/late lunch with my three year old. They were very accommodating. It was a very kid friendly experience. The hostess ended up sitting us in a booth area when she realized I had a toddler in tow. I think they were originally going to sit us at a table by the bar. But it was a much more pleasant experience sitting in a booth with my toddler. We were even able to store our wagon in an interior closet so I didn't have to leave it outside. They have some kid friendly items that are not on the menu. If you have an adventurous eater this won't matter but they do offer buttered noodles and plastic cups as well. The kiddo enjoyed the bread service and my mock tail. Overall it was a wonderful experience.
4.5 rounded down to a 4! came here for an anniversary
4.5 rounded down to a 4! came here for an anniversary dinner and our waiter was so sweet, kind, and attentive. we got the Indian red lentil soup with butter chicken and IT WAS A 10/10, and we're Indian. It was really amazing, I've never tried anything like that and it was perfectly balanced. We also got the classic artichoke tortellini, which was also a 10/10. The octopus dish was 4/5. Well cooked but it could've been more flavorful, and could've had more chorizo puree. The dessert was a flop. We got the chocolate mousse and the kumquat syrup on top was way too sour, it took away from the richness of the chocolate. Left a weird taste in our mouths and didn't feel like the best way to leave off a meal, hence the 4 stars. However this was a lovely place, I would 100% come back for the lentil soup and the artichoke tortellini. The house breads were also unique flavors (lavender bread was delicious) and very fresh. I appreciated this restaurant with a cozy yet mature lively vibe. I'd come back for a special occasion.
My husband and I go here for EVERY special event.
I have never had better food. Every time we go we try new things and I have never once been anything less than amazed. Their bread is so good, especially the little goat cheese one. We don't often get dessert at restaurants but we always do here - they're always plated so beautifully and feel really special. We love the fresh bacon, we've had multiple of their soups and they're always extremely rich and creamy I don't know how they make them like that. My husband will not let us come without getting the artichoke tortellini and I always make us get the vegetarian four squares because it's such a surprise and fun to sample a few things. The Amish chicken is incredible and I don't see it in the menu anymore but they had a steak with black garlic sauce that was beyond. Their menu is always changing slightly and you can't go wrong with anything. I wish I could eat here every night. I think this was a long enough rant about how much we love this place.
I came here for my birthday.
It was my first time visiting this restaurant, and what a lovely experience! Our server was adorable and explained the menu well. I had the cardamom pork belly appetizer, which melted like butter under my fork. I adored the lavender sourdough bread too. I had the artichoke tortelloni for my main dish. The flavors of all the dishes were exquisite. For dessert, they had a special: raspberry mousse, frangipane, Ruby chocolate, peppercorn marshmallow. Being an adventurous eater I had to try it, and I'm glad I did. But before it came, they brought me a surprise: birthday cake ice cream and a birthday card! This place is beautiful, fun, and the food is fabulous. Every staff member I interacted with was delightful. Highly recommended and I'll be back to try something new!
Excellent
Located in a great building on Larimer Square (which is closed off from traffic). Service and decor are excellent. We were there for lunch, so the menu was limited compared to the dinner menu. We all picked salads and added shrimp or chicken. The salads were all very different and quite tasty. The deserts were awesome. We would definitely go back.
Good food and efficient service
We had Efficient service and good food. Not too bad price wise. The artichoke tortellini was tasty and tender. A must try.
Wonderful Staff at Rioja
We ate at Rioja for the first time on our way to a show at Boettcher Hall. This is a lovely, busy restaurant, well decorated and well staffed. Our server Britain was excellent - very knowledgable about the wines, and menu. I believe he is the Sommelier for Rioja and his wine recommendation of what to pair with our food was really excellent. The only negative for me was receiving our food order from the kitchen being very slow and although I thought I had reserved our table with plenty of time before our show we had to ask if our food would be much longer (about 50 minutes after ordering). Our food then came out quickly once the kitchen staff knew we had somewhere to be (maybe mention this when you order if you have a show you're attending after eating). I had the vegetarian four squares which was good (not amazing) and my husband ordered the gnocchi with lamb which he said was excellent. Unfortunately, we ran out of time to order dessert but we will definitely eat at Rioja again as there was plenty to be impressed by and more that we wanted to try on another occasion.
It's pricey but in the case of Rioja you get what you pay
It's pricey but in the case of Rioja you get what you pay for. We have been there several times and have never been disappointed. It's a wonderful special occasion place for us
I attended the wine dinner on 4/9.
It was so amazing the food and the wine were terrific. I loved hearing from the winemakers. It was an amazing experience.
My goodness what a great dinner.
The ambiance and location are awesome. Lots of cool places to stroll after or before. We made a reservation and were seated timely. Ordered a few amazing dishes. Loved the goat cheese tart as an appetizer. It was creamy and esthetically appealing as well. For entrees I'd suggest the short rib. It was so good. The pastas were good too. We will be back for sure!
Delicious foods - truly different flavor profiles within
Delicious foods - truly different flavor profiles within one dish even. They have tons of wonderful wine selections. Atmosphere is perfect for a romantic date.

Tried the tasting menu, the Artichoke Tortelloni was the best plate I've had in Denver. If I ever come back I'm skipping the tasting menu and getting a full order of this. The tasting menu was great but seriously that was the star of the show.
I loved Rioja! I was in walking distance from my hotel.
We hadn't made reservations but were sat down without any hesitation. I wish I remembered our waiter's name, but he had long hair and a tall gentleman. He was nice. He made the dining experience fun and he constantly came to check if we were doing alright. All the wait staff as well were incredible, couldn't ask for a better experience. The food was AMAZING. We started off with their house salad, which light and fresh. Honestly one of my favorite salads. My artichoke tortellini was tasty, the broth was actually my favorite part of the dish. We ended it with this beautiful mousse, which hit the spot! I loved the sesame cracker that came with it. I would definitely come back to Rioja again!
Excellent service and unique dishes
The service was excellent. We mentioned it was our anniversary and they offered us some champagne, gave us ice cream, and a card signed by the staff. The food was unique and very good. I had the sashimi with beets, which was high quality, and the award winning tortelloni. My wife had the goat cheese tart and octopus. We had the goat cheese beingets for desert that I really liked.
Rioja - don’t pass by without stopping!
Such a laid back cool groove. Fantastic wine list, cosy bar, attentive staff and delightful menu combining great flavors. We wandered in having no expectations that were immediately exceeded. This is one to try!
Their pasta is to die for!
Rioja, located in Denver, offers an unforgettable dining experience with pasta that's simply to die for. The service, while quick, might be a tad brisk for European sensibilities. Nevertheless, the charming atmosphere sets the stage for a very enjoyable dinner.
Top three worst dinners I have ever had.
1) table not ready at time of reservation. 2) waiter is double sat by front of house 3) was told kitchen is running behind when asked if we have any plans after dinner. We did not. It was 6pm, so it was quite confusing how they were running so late, so early in dinner service. 4) the table next to us, whom arrived 15 minutes after us, said they did have plans afterwards. Waiter decides to value their time over ours, and it's our anniversary, and the restaurant was aware of this. 5) my first course features burnt, crispy gnocchi. 6) I am then told I WILL NOT receive my first course. Literally! I was asked, "do you want some bacon? Because we can't get your first course out now." I would be treated better than this at any other restaurant. Chili's has higher standards than this. 7) Brass tax: the executive chef here should be demoted to McDonald's. First off, is quality control part of your job? Because you sent out the worst pasta dish I have ever had, then let your table go hungry and denied them their meal for it. WOW who is trusting this person? Totally unprofessional, and really really really bad at your job. 8) Manager visits table and says, "Sorry about your dinner. We'll treat you better next time you are here." Next time?!?!? Excuse me? Next time? Yeah, then he walked away. What a dope! 9) after an hour at the restaurant, I receive the only food I have been offered, my enteee. 10) waiter says, "Oh boy oh boy oh boy... you get free dessert!" Excuse me... I'm still hungry! I've been in your restaurant for 90min and all I have received is 6oz of seafood. Whatever.. impress me with dessert! 11) two extremely miniature ice cream cones arrive. Exactly one bite each, and another for the baby cone it's attached to. Oh, but there's more! Two glasses of their house cava. "It's so exclusive! We make it ourselves!" This is the worst champagne I have ever had. It's not served in a flute, it has next to no bubbles, and it's disgusting. If it were $7 a bottle, it would still be the worst one on the shelf. 12) $150 bill. No first course for me, no dessert charged, no wine. RIPOFF. WORST MEAL. WILL NEVER BE BACK. 13) one year ago, this was my favorite restaurant. It's now the worst place I have been to in years. To say it's gone downhill is a dramatic understatement.
Pork Belly Mi Amor!
I try to always dine here when business brings me to Denver. Every dish is so well thoughtfully prepared, from design to plating it is just divine! The pork belly starter is one of the best dishes I've ever had. The banana desert is worth rolling yourself back to your hotel. The service is impeccable there exactly when you need them but never hovering. And the wine list is the envy of other restaurants in Denver I'm sure.
Love Rioga
I love Rioja and always go when I'm in Denver. My son and I discovered it several years ago, he lives in Breck, I still live in NH. The food is excellent, service is good, and we always feel welcome when we visit
Awesome meal!!!
Outstanding meal as always. Duck Leg special was excellent and the Artichoke Tortelloni was delicious as always (a fave). It was our friends 1st time in and they loved it! As did my wife. Interesting wine program; i had an awesome Nascetta from northern italy! Service and vibe top notch!

I have a notice stating that my bid has been accepted and is awaiting transfer. The reservation is for the 18th, but the “moderator” said he will confirm booking by the 28th. Is this an indicator that I may not have a reservation?

Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
