😍 5/5 - French or French-inspired cafe/bakery/bar/restaurant

French or French-inspired cafe/bakery/bar/restaurant (depending on what time of day you go or where you sit). I've been here a couple of times for dinner, but never for breakfast/brunch. It's heavily weighted on one of my experiences here (more on that later), but I would probably consider this one of my favorites, if not my favorite restaurant in the city. I first came here for a work dinner a few years ago and already loved this place based on the delicious food, wonderful service, and vibe. The standout was a whole roasted chicken dish that was served on this wooden board. My other experience - and possibly my favorite dining experience of all time - was a collaboration between the restaurant, my favorite local spirits/wine store, and Beam Suntory. With the purchase of a ticket, we sat in a private room upstairs, essentially got to do a tasting menu or try a good portion of the menu at the time, got a visit from Walter Manzke himself, and got to try different Japanese whiskies, including sampling some components of Beam Suntory blends (e.g. Yamazaki) that you couldn't even purchase separately. As a big fan of whisk(e)y and the food here, this was as good as it gets. I pretty much enjoyed everything and probably won't/can't go into detail of what we had (especially since some of the items may be seasonal or not available anymore), but the meal included: - Big eye tuna and caviar toast / potato and leek beignets - Oysters - Kanpachi crudo - Margarita's famous baguette with Normandy butter - Octopus and garden of little gems salad - Butternut squash agnolotti - Bucatini - cacio e pepe - Chanel islands rock cod - Sonoma County duck breast - Thao Farms cauliflower - Desserts: assorted sorbet, caramelized white chocolate sabayon, salted caramel chocolate cake Just a sample of the whiskies we got to try: -Yamazaki 18 sherry, cask strength, single cask -Yamazaki 21 mizunara cask strenght, single cask The space - this space has a lot of LA history with the original structure getting built by Charlie Chaplin back in 1929. I even remember coming here when it was Campanile and La Brea Bakery a bunch of years ago. I read that they even brought in lots of tile, Yakal wood, and wrought iron in the form of raw material from the Philippines for the most recent iteration in this space. With the history, the high ceilings and beautiful aesthetics, this building is iconic. Definitely trying to visit again soon to try their breakfast. That kimchi fried rice looks and sounds amazing. Parking - of the few times I went, I was able to find street parking within a short walk. There's also valet parking. Again, keep in mind, I haven't been for their breakfast service, so not sure how the parking situation is during the early part of the day.
