Chef Omar Makes It All Happen
Well, maybe not just Chef Omar. But he's got a good thing going at this delightful little unassuming restaurant. The Michigan bean taginne was perfect on a cold November evening. As were the pickled vegetables, beet salad, and spicy potatoes! It's now a must-stop whenever we're in Detroit.
Be the first to Reply"Hidden" Gem for Moroccan-inspired Cuisine
"Hidden" because, at the time of our visit in early 2022, it shouldn't have been so easy to snag a table at one of the hottest restaurants in town, run by James Beard-nominated Chef Omar (finalist for Best Chef, Great Lakes Region, in 2022). Before the crowds finally catch wind of this place, make a trip down Gratiot for one of the best, most reasonably-priced meals in town. We visited on a Saturday night, ordering a tomato and goat cheese dip with fresh pita chips (the latter might be the best pita chip we've ever had... warm and fresh and spiced perfectly); a fried fish sandwich (they are known for their perfect fish fry, using local lake catch and a crispy but light crust); cauliflower soup; and a carrot and raisin tagine atop couscous (which, despite being fully vegetarian, packed a huge punch with taste, texture, and beauty). This was just enough for 2, but another dish could have been ordered. Their falafel (Omar's mom's recipe) is a popular order (on a menu that changes occasionally). A big pot of the Moroccan mint tea is also recommended (served by the staff, who are also a part of the restaurant's draw). Food and quality like this should be better supported, lest we lose it. Highly highly recommended. Say hi to Omar while you're there.
Be the first to ReplySo delicious!! We are looking forward to eating here soon!!
After hearing about this restaurant, and then seeing Chef Omar Anani on television to discuss how the coronavirus is affecting small businesses, including restaurants, we had to try them via a take-out order (since they have shutdown their in-restaurant service). I have to say that we totally enjoyed our selection of four items: loaded hummus and chips, harissa slaw, lamb tagine, and Moroccan meatball sliders. So delicious!! Savored each bite of the sliders and the tagine. We can't for our next order!!
Be the first to ReplyWow! What unique and yummy dishes here. Great staff too.
What a concept here, you pay after your meal at this counter style spot, you pay once you are satisfied and happy.
It’s halal here, Moroccan food and alcohol free.
Communal tables and counter spaces here. It’s small, about 14 seats.
Ordered the fish and chips, the fish is corn mealed and gluten free, harissa slaw, roasted beet salad and the fried chicken sandwich.
The guy that took our order is super friendly and informative. He is such a nice guy, likes feedback and really listens too. The busser and runner was quick and efficient to bring out our food as soon as it was done and keep our table tidy.
The orange blossom has a strong floral presence, Rose water maybe, it’s very different for sure.
The fried chicken is huge, super crunchy, tasted good, just a bit cumbersome to eat and was piled with the yummy harissa slaw.
The beet salad was refreshingly good and love the creaminess from the cheese.
The harissa slaw tastes good, have to get used to the long slices, it’s hard to fold over and eat, but doable.
The fish and chips are nice, crunchy too.
I unfortunately didn’t have room for the chocolate baklava, which looked fantastic. Next time.
It’s a definite gem here in the D.
Must go...............
I learned that I love Moroccan food. The chef and his outstanding staff made the visit warm and welcoming.....not to mention educational.
The appetizers alone can make a delicious meal.....then come the entrees. The fried foods, fish and chicken sandwich were crisp and juicy.............not the least bit greasy. Lamb tangine and the beef meatballs were outstanding. There is not one thing we tried that I would not recommend.
I look forward to whatever food this chef and staff will put on the table.
Holy Cow - a total and wonderful surprise
Bare bones diner setting, amazing wait staff, a chef who TALKS to guests, and made from scratch Moroccan inspired food to die for. Honestly, try everything. Eggplant appetizer, goat cheese and tomato sauce appetizer and “loaded” hummous, all served with lighter than air pita crisps were delicious. The fried chicken and fried fish, originally on the menu to introduce folks to Moroccan seasoning, were really extraordinary - perfectly seasoned and perfectly fried without a hint of greasiness. Wonderful slaw topped the chicken, charmoula topped the fish. Three different regimes served on a bed of couscous and diced veggies were all delicious. Lots of flavor, but spice is all tuned way down from traditional levels, so everyone can enjoy it. Try this place!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent!
We were at Saffron De Twah today as a meetup group at the big dinner table. We got to taste almost everything with family style platters to share. All was wonderful! The owner shared a lot of his international food knowledge with us and will continue to expand the Moroccan menu beyond what it already has.
It's a small space, our group took up the big table. Others sat at the window bar stools. Then a patio table was brought in and cleaned to make more room. FANTASTIC! Cheers to the owner and staff.
Limited Space
Came here as a group of four to have lunch, but due to very limited space and all seats taken, that didn't work. Apparently, there was a neighborhood meeting going; all tables were pushed together, all seats filled. Too bad! We were really looking forward to some good Moroccan food. As a result we did not have lunch here, so no review of the food, but I'd trust the other two reviews on this TA site and assume it's pretty good. Menu looked great and prices were reasonable.
Hours are:
Monday - CLOSED
Tues - Thur, 11 AM to 8 PM
Fri - Sat, 11 AM to 10 PM
Sunday, 11 AM to 3 PM
So.... My advice would be to have lunch here early or late to avoid a crowd and to secure some seating. Or.... take out! Reservations not accepted.
Beautiful food
My mom and I had weekday lunch here and it was great. We both got the Lamb Tangine. It looked beautiful and tasted great. Such nice flavors and ingredients. The food was ready quickly and the pricing is very fair. The owner and chef is very friendly. The rest of the menu looks amazing. I will definitely be back to try out some of the other dishes. Capacity is only 25 diners, but when we went around 1130 on a Tuesday, my mom and I were the only ones there. Hope enough people fall in love with this place to keep it open. No alcohol.

I would highly recommend a trip to Saffron De Twah if you are in the Detroit area! The food is beyond amazing! Everything was well seasoned, flavorful, and the meet was tender. The prices are extremely reasonable for the quality of food that you get. Also, chef Omar really makes you feel like you’re at home when you visit the restaurant! I will absolutely be returning on my next trip to Detroit!
