Price Inflation & Sparse Taste
While the food certainly featured a good taste for the most part, including the delicious chawanmushi, the scallops handroll, and the sweet shrimp nigiri and their warmly tasty fried heads in particular, some parts were less tasty than expected such as the ikura nigiri which honestly tasted rather foul and nothing like I've ever tasted in Tokyo or anywhere else in Japan or in Honolulu where we often get fish flown in from Japan, and the california handroll and the california cut rolls both tasted a little bland and the entire inside was like a puree that was molded inside the roll which I'd never eaten even in Honolulu where the california rolls actually taste phenomenal with strings of crabmeat, lots of mayonnaise, long cucumber stalks and slices of avocado. Most surprising was the enormous price increase from the menu that we had found on their website shortly before visiting -- as in, the $20 chirashi now cost $30 and green tea costs $3 rather than being complimentary as we see in Japan and Honolulu. We were hoping that this restaurant will match our Honolulu favorite, Katsumidori Sushi, but alas, despite costing almost twice as much at the end the flavors we encountered throughout our dinner were rather sparse and overshadowed by the attention to customer service we had received. I have great respect for the people who run this seemingly authentically-oriented sushi establishment and hope that they may soon find a way to bring the explosive joy of sushi as eaten in Japan and Honolulu to their homeplace in Orange County. Please keep us apprised of new changes on your website, thank you!!

I recently ordered a takout order for Shunka; I have been here in the past but this was my first time ordering takeout since the pandemic. Phone ordering was easy and they were very flexible about customization of rolls etc. I ordered the 369 Roll, California Cut Roll with added masago, Crunchy Roll, Blue Crab Cut Roll, Shima Aji Sushi, Yellowtail Belly, Fresh Water Eel Sushi, Uni Sushi and Chirashi Lunch Special Bowl.
Preparation took about 30 minutes and pick up was easy and convenient. The food quality is amazing, I especially recommend the Blue Crab Cut Roll which usually comes as a handroll for $12 but you can ask them to make it a cut roll for around $15 I think. The yellowtail belly was perfectly tender and flavorful as were the other cuts. The chirashi bowl is a great deal in my opinion, especially for lunch. The total for this lunch cost around $108 pre-tip for 3 people which I believe is quite reasonable given other places. The size may be smaller than other places in terms of the sashimi and sushi but the quality more than makes up for it. I would highly highly recommend this place!
One of the best sushi joints
The best sushi you will ever eat. Tell the chef the word 'omakase' , meaning, "I'll leave it up to you' and you will never be disappointed. Excellent service by the staff.

We have eaten sushi all over the Los Angeles area at at least 30-40 places as well as everywhere we travel in the US and Europe. Itโs not unusual for us to go eat sushi at our favorite little place in Deep South Texas three or four times a week. My wife knows and demands fresh fish!
We were recently in Newport Beach to visit our son for a couple days and he brought us here for lunch. The variety and quality and freshness of the fish was incredible. We were able to try a lot of fish that we had not had before or is often not available. We came back for dinner and the next day came back for lunch and dinner again! If we didnโt have to go back to Los Angeles for a couple days before returning home we would have come back again the next day.
Itโs a small place and there may be a short wait to get into in the evening. Very nice ambience and very helpful and friendly staff (family owned?).
They also had some very unique and original sauces and proprietary flavorings including a marinated wasabi that were fantastic.
All in all some of the best sushi we have had anywhere. Prices were very much in line and we would recommend anyone who really loves sushi (not โCalifornia Rollโ type places) to try Shunka Sushi.
Shunka - the best sushi in Newport - but - also - GREAT Tempura
Went here (again) the other night. Shunka continues to be one of the best sushi restaurants I have ever been to. The fish is always very fresh - and in addition to a great selection of "local" sushi, they have a wide selection of (admittedly pricey) offerings from Japan. What I had forgotten though (and was reminded) is that they also serve absolutely outstanding Tempura. We had a tempura appetizer (while waiting for sushi) and almost wished we'd just had tempura. It was so crisp and grease-free - cooked perfectly and came absolutely hot. they also have a good sake menu.

They have amazing sushi time and time again. I could eat here every night. Very good value for the quality and what you get. Lots of different kinds of sushi like Buri, Sea Bream and about 8 others.

But it's sad to see sushi restaurants run by Japanese chefs that does not "wow" us. It was "only" good that I can say. I don't know if I will go back there.

First of all donโt believe the reviews. Itโs way overpriced, overrated, and they have the most ridiculous seating policy. The people there are rude. The place is small and not a good place for a group of friends. With so many places to go in the area I would take a pass on this place.

Always looking for great sushi, we read some reviews and were looking forward to visiting Sushi Shunka. We went on a Friday evening. The place was crowded, loud, expensive, and the sushi did not taste fresh. Zero ambiance. Everything we ordered, and we ordered a lot, was rubbery and stale tasting. I guess we should have known when we were told they don't serve toro. What kind of sushi restaurant doesn't have toro? Very very disappointing.
