The food was perfectly prepared and, yeah, the setting is serene. The service was excellent I might add.

One of the best lunch specials in the city in my opinion! They have so many different ways to mix and match foods so I was able to try both a donburi and their soba. Stopped by with a couple of friends on the weekend and we were seated immediately. The service was quick and the vibe was relaxed and casual. Definitely coming back!!
Be the first to ReplyNot your typical Japanese restaurant.
My friend and I came here without a reservation on a Saturday evening, and the restaurant was packed and lively. We ordered the salmon belly and nameko oroshi to share; it was a very unique experience. I saw other people have similar dishes, but they dipped their soba into the dipping sauce whereas we poured the sauce over our soba. Not sure why the discrepancy, but we didn't mind. The cold soba was delicious with the mushroom and radish. I loved how the sauce wasn't salty at all and matched the noodles exceptionally well. The salmon belly caught me by surprise because the inside was raw, but I realized that just brought the texture and taste to a whole other level. Rich, indulgent... The salmon essentially melted in my mouth. Service was kind and attentive. Very affordable restaurant on the 2023 Michelin Guide. Thank you for this experience, Sobaya!

I would pick cold soba over ramen almost any day and I've had this spot on my list for a while! I originally intended to come for their Thursday lunch special (see website for rotating offers) to save $4 from 12-3 but it was rainy out, what can I say? In the end, my hunger won and I made the journey out to this cute little strip of Japanese restaurants to get my fill of cold soba and hot tempura. I was seated right away at 5pm, a tad early for the dinner crowd. The interior is very date-night friendly - intimate with soft lighting and even a small fountain at the entrance! My Ten Zaru (cold soba with 3x shrimp and 1x shishito pepper tempura) arrived quickly and I devoured my meal! The noodles were super chilled and springy, my only complaints are that I wish there was a little more and that there were fewer small broken pieces as I got to the end. The tempura were decently sized and piping hot with a thin crunchy coating, not the BEST ever but no complaints here! Overall service was quick and attentive, my hot tea was refilled promptly and I didn't have to wait for anything. While it was a little pricey ($30ish after tax/tip), I'd return for a lunch special or if I'm craving soba and in the area!

I ordered the curry udon here, and maybe that was my mistake since this place seems to be known for soba. The curry udon was fine but i've definitely had better in NYC. There was a bit of a wait for our party of 4 walk in as well. Overall, didn't hate this place but probably if I came back I wouldn't order the same thing (though nothing else really stood out to me...)

Came here on a Friday after work and was able to sit down and order right away. Service was quick and efficient, they took our orders and the food came out very fast. The place had a chatty and friendly atmosphere inside, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and having good conversations but it was definitely not a crazy loud or overly crowded with people. The food was fresh, tasty, and well-made. The rice bowls and soba all seemed reasonably priced, but some of the other items on the menu were definitely a bit pricier. The salmon was so tasty and fresh and the rice was honestly perfection. I definitely judge places on their rice, and this rice was perfectly cooked, not too dry or too mushy, it was light and fluffy, and just so good. I know people don't usually go to restaurants just for rice, but honestly good rice helps to compliment the rest of the meal so much.

My bf and I came here for dinner on a Monday night without a reservation. Luckily, we were seated after waiting only 5 minutes and ordered the kamo nanban and the tempura noodles. The restaurant itself is quite cozy and is reminiscent of restaurants in Japan. The food itself was not the best. Because it was still winter, we didn't order any of the soba noodles. Instead we opted for the hot soup noodles. The kamo nanban was on the oilier side and the soup was too citrusy. Although the duck was tender and tasty, the noodles failed to meet expectations. As for the tempura noodles, my bf did like the tempura but was also not a fan of the citrusy soup. The server ended up bringing over some type of spice to give our broths some flavor and that really helped. I would come back to Sobaya later in the spring/summer to try the sobas but I was not a fan of the soup noodles!
Be the first to ReplyThe restaurant was fairly nice and quiet.
The food was not particularly outstanding, but it's 1 of those spots where if you needed a hot bowl of noodle soup, it will be ok. The chicken katsu was overcooked and chewy. The shrimp tempura was crunchy but the shrimp itself was not which was really disappointing. The soba itself was decent and I got the tempura flakes added into the soup for a little extra texture and flavor. The soup was clean tasting, but lacked some depth besides the salty flavor. I'd only go back if other restaurants in the area had too long of a wait and I wanted noodle soup.

I can see why this place has very mixed reviews in terms of expectations. I would say my rating of Sobaya is a fair 4 stars out of 5, with an explanation of the breakdown. Ambience: I came in and was greeted immediately and service was very attentive. Service is not chatty but will immediately refill your food or take away plates. This overall contributes to the already quiet peaceful dining experience. I went to the restroom after my meal and I definitely can see the care in the amenities given in this restaurant. They have a nice bidet that automatically warms up your toilet seat. Great quality toilet paper (lol I'm serious) and paper towels. Food: I didn't have the soba this time because I was really craving Ten Don today and wanted something more homey tasting. I had the Tuna Yuba Maki $17 as my appetizer which is chopped tuna, avocado, shisho leaf and wrapped in tofu skin. The presentation was beautiful and it was placed on top of a nearly cut banana leaf. I felt like the avocado was a little out of place and overpowered the shiso but it was still pretty good. I had the Ten Don $22 for dinner. The Ten Don came out on a nice platter with a cup to pour my sauce over the tempura. Tempura was crispy and they used good quality rice. Overall I feel like Sobaya suffers from issues with pricing that everyone talks about because of the location. This place definitely serves homey Japanese comfort food if that's what you're looking for in the area. But the price tag doesn't give homey Japanese comfort food, but it's due to the location higher pricing has to be put into consideration for the establishment. I would say that a lot of small attention to details in amenities are included in this price tag from food, presentation, to ambience. I would come back here if I was in the mood for a Japanese comfort meal and only if I'm in the area. But not a place I expect to be wowed.
Be the first to ReplyQuite a disappointing experience.
I was really looking forward to Sobaya all trip, the pictures looked straight out of Japan. However, my kitsunesoba bowl was not hot, the broth tasted weirdly sweet and the kitsune pieces too sweet, too few and too small. The tempura was quite good but the soba was just simply underwhelming. I was also excited about the warabimochi but I barely tasted any green tea or matcha in it. At the high price point the experience was a let down.

Place was empty and we were seated right away when we arrived around noon on a Wednesday. Service was super quick; the food arrived probably under 10 minutes of ordering. My friend and I both got the Wednesday Donburi lunch special. The salmon in the Sake Ikura don was (surprisingly) good - super tender and almost melt-in-your mouth. The soba noodles felt a little undercooked but were otherwise unremarkable. Also, I felt that the portion sizes were on the smaller side for the price ($18 for the lunch special which was reasonable, but $22 full price).Would I come back? Eh, maybe - but probably only for the lunch special. (P.S. The bathroom has one of those built-in bidets + seat warmers that I'm too scared to use ... but if that's your vibe, go check it out lol it was a really nice bathroom)
Be the first to ReplySo very disappointing! We were expecting really good food
So very disappointing! We were expecting really good food from all the wonderful reviews.Instead, our very expensive delivery order was a B- at best. The shrimp tempura main dish had only 3 pieces- all of them soggy on top of a large bucket of plain rice. It would have been easy to wrap the shrimp in tin foil to keep them crispy, but no care was done int he packing. In fact, the whole bag of food leaked.!The other dishes were also unimpressive. The tempura noodles dish, miso soup, and shumai were all rather ordinary.we will not be ordering from here again, for sure

A solid place for dinner! I loved the broth and soba noodles and didn't think it was too expensive for the quality you get. Food comes out pretty fast but it can take a bit to get seated. The shishito peppers are also a great starter to get!
Be the first to ReplyThis place never disappoints me.
I have been going here for over a decade and their quality remains top-notch!I usually order their cold soba noodles and upon my most recent visit, saw that they had a great combo (a choice of noodles) and (choice of rice dish). Their soba noodles are great, and come with a great dipping sauce.Tempura was also delicately fried, and not overtly oilyAlso, if you have ever wanted to experience a Japanese bidet, at least one (maybe both, I only accessed one bathroom) of their bathrooms has them. The bathroom is very clean and the bidet is very warm and fancy with multiple options to customizeService is also great, friendly and quick! In the past, I used to have to wait for up to 15-20 mins. On my most recent visit, which was a Saturday afternoon, there was no wait at all!
Be the first to ReplySoba is perfect for a light meal.
I wasn't feeling all too hungry, so my friend and I split a hot tempura soba. The portion is generous and perfect to share between two people who might not want to eat too much. The shrimp tempura was done well. The shishito tempura was mostly mushy sans the batter. The batter was decently light and airy. However, I thought the soba was a tad overcooked, and the broth was too salty.Staff were friendly and didn't rush us. They even came by to ask for last orders. The soba was pretty average. I might come back for the lunch set because it seems like a good deal, but it wouldn't be my first choice for noodles.

My friends and I decided to try Soba-ya because of the many 5 star reviews and popularity. We ordered the nabeyaki, cold dipping noodles, and a udon that came with duck meat. The nabeyaki was mids, the soup had barely any flavor, two pieces of fish cake and 1 tempura.. that was it. My friend who also got the nabeyaki was disappointed as well. The duck meat udon was super gamey, dry and tasted like card board. The dipping noodles were decent but the noodle portion is lacking. I give high ratings for the service and the clean bathroom though! Also their hot tea is delicious, they charge $1 per cup but offer refills. Would I come back? I don't think so since there's better options in the area.

If you've been following me for a while, you'll know that I'm a fiend for soba noodles. The lightness of each noodle and balance of flavors makes it one of my favorite dishes.Soba-ya definitely doesn't disappoint. This here is the Ikura Oroshi, cold soba topped with ikura, seaweed, & grated radishes... it's pretty much the perfect bowl. Pour the dashi over the noodles and enjoy it with the wasabi.@phidingthefam
Be the first to ReplyFive stars because the eel over rice was phenomenal.
Like, damn. I'm coming here for eel rice, like, forever.Note to self: fried chicken was good but they don't provide any sauce .
Be the first to ReplyI was here with one other person.
The service was friendly. We got some tea to start and ordered an appetizer from the special section. This was listed as simmered eggplant and I believe it was Nasu Agebitashi/èćăźæă攞ă or fried eggplant in a dashi and soy broth. I think I remember it being $8 or something similar and liking it a lot. I went with the Kamo Nanban/鎚ćèź Soba while the other person went with the Kinoko Soba/ăăźăăă° and we both got it hot (all the soba and udon dishes can also be served cold.) In my dish, kamo means duck (with nanban being exotic) and it was served with negi/spring onions and it is one of my preferred type of sobas. The duck was quite tender and the noodles had the proper texture and flavor I expect from buckwheat noodles. I wouldn't say that the duck was as good or the noodles as properly textured as my old preferred spot (Kokage) but the latter is unfortunately permanently closed and this made a good substitution. In the latter, kinoko means mushroom and this was in short a mixed mushroom soba and it certainly came with a good variety of mushrooms. I tried a bit of the latter and it was also very tasty. I heavily preferred this over Tsurutontan though I would like to try some of the other top soba places before calling this one my new favorite. Still very good and I can see why they've been opened for a long while. Low 4.

Celebrated a friend's belated birthday here, loved the Japanese inspired interior and such a cute lunch spot! No reservations so we went right when it opened and was pretty full for lunch time! I ordered the eel don and soba lunch set which was delicious (9/10)! The portions they gave you make it high value and I would definitely come back to try the other dons. Soba was fresh and broth was light. My friend ordered the tofu soba and realized soba wasn't her favorite. Overall, great lunch spot with good value on sets. Will be coming back to try their raw options!
Be the first to ReplyOne of the premier Soba restaurants in New York.
Authentic homemade noodles and broth. The food speaks for itself, if you know Soba, then this is your place. They have Sushi, Sashimi and other Izakaya fare as well.Oddly, most of the staff are not Japanese. A rare anomaly in the NYC authentic Japanese restaurant venues.I highly recommend this restaurant for Japanese food lovers.

Very cozy and delicious Japanese noodle house! We came for lunch set and there were a lot of selection with high quality ingredient. The lunch set came with soup soba, sushi over rice including salmon, salmon roe, and scallop. Though it was a bit crowded, it felt like very neat and organized. There were a family of four with two young kids sitting next to our table and they seemed to enjoy themselves very much as well.
Be the first to ReplyThis has been great place to go for satisfying soba noodle
This has been great place to go for satisfying soba noodle cravings.Love the cold soba noodle options for hot summer days like this season, but I can't wait to try the hot ones too!We got the plum wine (one straight and one with soda) to start. Then we ordered the Ten Zaru with chicken katsu on the side and the Chirashi Cold Noodles.Pros:*Shrimp tempura was amazing in both noodle dishes, was not dry, and was fried nicely*Soba noodles were Al dente, just as I like them*The egg (Dashimaki tamago) on the Chirashi Cold Noodles was also super tasty*Tastes really good with some wasabi mixed inCons:*Chicken katsu was a miss - too dry inside and outSeating was comfortable. The place was filled but not crowded and not so loud that you have to talk over people to hear the person you're listening/speaking to.Overall, would definitely come back!

Heard some pretty good things about Soba-ya and was interested in the lunch set deals, but was a bit disappointed. It was a good but nothing special. I hadn't had unagi (eel) in a while so it hit the spot and the cold soba noodles were refreshing during the hot summer. But the portions are a bit deceiving. It looks like a lot of noodles but there actually isn't much. As a visitor from out of town, I probably won't be back, but it offers a decent lunch.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful spot for authentic Japanese noodle dishes.
A few blocks away from the busy astor place, Soba-ya offers a great selection of Japanese classics that happens to be brilliantly executed, while retaining the comforting and familial style of the dishes in question. The dining room ambience is simple and clean, sporting classic Japanese colors and decor. Service is prompt, knowledgeable, and attentive, and the wait for the food is surprisingly short. The food is wonderful, with hearty dashi-based soups that can be topped with a selection of Japanese favorites like tempura, bean curd and fish cakes. The house made noodles (customer can choose between soba and udon) are of the highest quality and complement the rich soups excellently. Absolutely worth a stop!
