The Red Hook outpost of this Michelin guide/Bib Gourmand
The Red Hook outpost of this Michelin guide/Bib Gourmand featured restaurant is even better than the original East Village location. Their low key and spacious backyard is the ideal place to post up on a summer afternoon, with plates of their namesake somtum (papaya salad) and many of their other Isan Thai specialties.Isan food is from the Eastern region of Thailand, and whose dishes are more similar to food from Laos than the food from Bangkok. People may associate Thai food with curries, but Isan Thai food features more spicy salads and grilled meats, all of which we enjoyed during our recent visit.Their menu lists at least five versions of papaya salad, or somtum, and based on our order of the version with salted egg, they were absolutely right to name their restaurant after this dish. The shredded papaya itself had the perfect texture, and was swimming in the most piquant and umami-filled sauce that was a little spicy, salty, sweet, and tangy. I didn't know I could like papaya salad so much until I tried their iteration.I love a good larb and was excited to see they had one made with crispy fish. This salad had amazing texture, and all the aromatics and sauce made for a salad that woke up my taste buds and served as a great palate cleanser for the denser dishes we had on our table like the pad thai, skewers and a rice dish with fried egg, tofu, and chinese broccoli. I'm convinced there are no weak dishes on their menu. The dishes came out really quickly, and the staff gladly obliged when we asked to relocate inside after getting chewed out by mosquitoes. It's just a reality of New York summers, but my skeeter syndrome could never.I'd go so far as to deem Somtum Der a restaurant worth traveling out of your way for.

Horrible costumer service and food! All of our dishes were super spicy to the point that they were barely edible... Then the server demanded that we give him a 20% tip. We explained that we were not happy with the food and service. When we checked our credit card statements the following day, we realized that the staff had tampered with our tip and charged us more money. When we reached out to confront them about it, instead of apologizing for their behavior they claimed that they did a mistake when entering the tip amount in their system (Mistake on both credit cards?? SKETCHY.....) Also they kept repeating that all customers leave for them a "20% tip"... Since when is tip mandatory for crappy food and service?? Do yourself a favor and avoid this place....

I came here a few times during the pandemic and the food was always very good except for the small portion of the price paid. but things changed later, I came back today and all the dishes were very salty or not as good as before anymore probably due to staff changes. I kept drinking water none stop and felt nasty. Don't think i wanna go back anymore but maybe the lower east location
Be the first to ReplySuper delicious.
I like the garlic beef with rice and a fried egg.

Delicious, fresh & tasty food at great prices (check out lunch special $14). Attentive service that is not too over the top. We had spring rolls (said mild spicy but had a good kick), crab friend rice that was so satisfying and beef skewers perfectly cooked. Interested in returning again and again and trying many other dishes! 4 stars because it is off the beaten path.
Be the first to ReplyGlad they opened a location in Brooklyn.
Great place for Thai food. Their tom yum goong was one of the best I had. Also had their crabmeat fried rice and it was good too- good wok flavor.
Be the first to ReplyThis place deserves more than 5 stars.
It is definitely an authentic Thai food and charming ambience in the backyard. We tried House Special Grilled Marinated Pork, Tom Yum Goong, Som Tum Thai and all is excellent. I am a Tom-yum lover and this place has the best tomyum since Thailand.Longan and lemongrass drinks are also tasty. It is a must try!!!!

Most authentic tasting Thai I've had since being in the states! Lived in Thailand for years, Samut Sakhon to be exact. So happy we found this place, will definitely be coming back.

Another outpost of the beloved EV Thai restaurant in Red Hook. Just like its other restaurant in EV, this place also specializes in Isaan Thai food. For those who are fans of this style, you will love Somtum Der.Food highlights for me:-All of their papaya salads are wonderful, but the favorite is the Tum Poo which has the blue crab-The fried chicken pieces (sa pak kai tod der) is very good, although probably a bit on the saltier side-One of my favorite Isaan dishes is the raw shrimp salad (goong chae nam pla). The one here does not disappoint, although I probably like the one at Zabb Putawn better-Larb moo is really goodI have to admit I haven't tried many of their noodle dishes, but plan to come back to do so.The space itself is not super large, but they have a spacious backyard, which is perfect when the weather is nice. I do miss the days of when they used to BYOB, but now they've gone to serving their own alcohol. This is always on the options list when I'm in the neighborhood!

Excellent traditional dishes not watered down to American western tastes. The food is well portioned and delicious.
Be the first to ReplyReally authentic and tasty Thai food.
Goong Chae Nam Pla - spicy prawn sashimi. Highlight of the meal, it has everything I expect from a Thai place, definitely will order it again. 5/5Tom Saab Kradook On - spicy pork cartilage soup. The soup base is almost like a milder and clearer version of Tom Yam soup, very refreshing. 4.5/5 I heard pretty good things about all the soup on the menu, would definitely try some of the other ones in the future.H'orderves Der - deep fried sausage sampler. I usually wouldn't order deep fried food, but this platter take you to Isan. The one looks like tofu is especially good. 4.5/5Tub Wann - Pork liver salad. The flavor is good, but the liver itself is very overcooked. 4/5Tum Poo Plara - spicy papaya salad with carb. Extremely spicy!!! 4/5Chief's Signature Wok Fried Seafood Suki - my friend ordered this and I did not have high hope for it, but I was presently surprised. Although I won't call it authentic Thai dish, it actually taste pretty good, like a sweet and sour vermicelli seafood stir fry. 4/5
Be the first to ReplyA very unique Thai place.
The papaya salad with salty duck egg was my favorite. The spicy fish soup was a great hit too, the spicy and sour/lemongrassy was a perfect match for a warm summer day. Pad thai was good too. The interior is very stylish and our server was very nice too. Overall it was a great experience. I'd definitely come back for the papaya salad.
Be the first to ReplyCame for father's day had a b1g1 free beer for my dad.
Server and staffs were very nice and helpful. The soup had mushroom and shrimp it was great. Tangy and sour w a bit natural taste from the greens.Thai tea was great. both w and w/o milk. Papaya salad was refreshing w the vegetarian version. Not as fishy i was a fan. Grilled rice skewer was a hit. The marinated dry pork was a miss. the sauce that came with it was very spicy and tangy tho, good combo dish(meat rice nd sauce) Pad si eiw standard I got mine spicy, my mom had the non spicy. It was flavorful and we were happy. Thinking about it now. Garlic beef was flavorful but notquite for my palate. Pad Ki Mao was good and very basil tasting. Pad Thai was sriracha flavored in my opinion. The dessert waa very good, so good I wish i had another one. Thai Tea panna cotta 10/10!
Be the first to ReplyFound this spot after an IKEA run and glad I did.
The decor is pretty cool, definitely gave Bangkok vibes and the staff were very friendly. They have a majority of the more popular thai dishes, pad thai, etc along with some lesser known northeastern dishes. A lot of people were getting the fried chicken, definitely will try next time!

I've been to lots of Esan/ Lao/ Thai restaurant and let me tell you. This place did not disappoint. Every dish was a HIT. The flavors are very authentic. Definitely get their larb, fried chicken and papaya salad. My thai/ Laotian fiancรฉ lovessss this place. Will be coming by very often!

I've heard & read really good things about this place, which is why I chose this place for an early dinner.unfortunately for me, this place is a NO. There were three of us & no one could eat their food. My friend became very nauseous & had to excuse herself from the table. My daughter couldn't eat any of her food as well. My rice was hard & tasted as if it wasn't cooked thoroughly. We ended up asking for our bill, paid & left.

Man! I don't even know where to begin, my wife and I went to IKEA and on our way back we decided to stop by and grab something to eat. Great food, good music and nice decor. The staff is Friendly!
Be the first to ReplyFood was absolutely delicious.
We walked in and grabbed a table relatively quickly. Great service too!

If you come here for lunch on the weekday, get the fried chicken lunch special. Their fried chicken is one of the best I've had in the city (well seasoned, crispy, juicy) and the papaya salad is fresh and packed with heat and flavor.
Be the first to ReplyI love the food and the service at Somtum Der! I go here
I love the food and the service at Somtum Der! I go here weekly and always dine-in because it's so cozy and warm. My favorites are the papaya salad (Tum Thai) and the catfish soup (Tom Klong Pla Dook Yang). I always get sticky rice to. The warm coconut taro desert is yummy.
Be the first to ReplyFood was great, especially Tum Yang Kung was very different
Food was great, especially Tum Yang Kung was very different from what I'de been eating, in a good way. This place is worth the hype. However, probably it didn't look like a dine-in place - the dining room was so cold that food got cold very very fast...
Be the first to ReplyI came here last night with my family a party of 11.
The food was okay everything was salty. The server was not too friendly, the person who served us the drinks was Mr. Personality. He had no patience in distributing the drinks to each one of us, he just left them on the table and walked away. SMH It's going to be our first and last going to this place.

Came here for brunch on a misty Sunday afternoon and this restaurant seems like a lovely added gem to the neighborhool. My friend and I was craving for Thai and since they had a lovely back patio, we opted to check them out. Of course I've been to the one in the LES so seeing that they expanded to Brooklyn was definitely a treat. The inside of the restaurant was cute but their patio was much better so if I had to suggest, go ask for an outside table if the weather permits. Without a double we ordered their fried chicken thigh appetizer because I adore the one I had at their other location. I also ordered their drunken noodle and shared their grilled crusted roasted rice beef strip with coconut sticky rice skewers. All in all, the food was good but I wouldn't say it was fantastic. The amount of chicken that was given was little in comparison to the price they were charging. I felt I would have gotten more of my money's worth if I went for korean fried chicken at another restaurant instead. As for the grilled crusted roasted rice beef, it was a bit burnt and dry. Of course my main dish, the shrimp drunken noodle lack the charred flavor.Overall, I find their price tag to be a bit higher then the average Thai restaurant that are in the neighborhood. Though I have to say, their music was great. I don't know what they were playing but it did help set a relaxing vibe. Would I suggest going here, sure why not. What might not suite my boat, might suite yours, especially when the service was friendly.

Wow! Only had takeout from here, but holy smokes the food was amazing. If you are craving Thai, do not be afraid to order here, as you can't go wrong. Looking forward to eating here in person, but in the meantime, I can fully recommend getting your Thai fix from this place.
Be the first to ReplySuch good Thai food.
Be warned that everything is very spicy in the best way. The papaya salads are all delicious and super funky. And the prices are really reasonable for the quality and inventiveness. We order takeout regularly and the quality is incredibly consistent.
