I am a huge Alain Ducasse fan.
I have eaten at six of his restaurants in Paris (see previous Yelp reviews of Le Jules Verne, Allard, Benoît, Restaurant Champeaux, Aux Lyonnais, Plaza Athénée, and Le Chocolat) and I have several of his cookbooks and travel books. This is his 24th restaurant which opened less than three weeks ago. The cuisine is mixed and is inspired by his global travels. My experience today, however, was a complete disappointment! The little bit of food that I received was flavorful and amazing. The service was horrible. I think my waiter had at least twelve tables. There was no continuity in the service flow. Long wait times for ordering, delivery and clearing of my dishes, a 20-minute wait for the WiFi code, and finally when I asked to order some dessert and coffee, the chiffon cake au thé matcha, glace au sencha, I was told they where out. As my waiter was giving me the remaining dessert options, the manager interrupted him and they had a conversation. I was also told that dishes in the Bento could not be made without onions. The customer obviously is not a priority. I decided I had enough because I was tired of sitting around doing nothing. I just wanted to leave...fast!!!! I was never offered anything more to drink or if I wanted wine or a cocktail. (Which I would have liked...) I would have ordered another dish (because I was starving) but no one asked...I have never had service like this at any other Ducasse restaurant. It is not the overwhelmingly wonderful Ducasse standard of service that I had grown accustomed to over the years at his other establishments. The interior decor was nice. The serving portions are very, very small. My lunch of three shrimp ravioli (Ravioli de crevettes epicees) and four undercooked skewered scallops (Brochettes de Saint-Jacques citron/wakamé) and a small bottle of Badoit was €40. I have paid much more for food at Plaza Athénée and Le Jules Verne but we received a nice quantity of amazing food to eat!! I left Spoon hungry, upset, and truly disappointed. Then, I went and ate again at another restaurant. I travel the world. I greatly appreciate and enjoy regional cuisines. The menu makes little sense to me...Mexican with Thai or Brazilian...all together in one meal especially with such limited choices?! It is like going to a potluck and everyone is told to bring something. Trying to pair items for a meal that compliment each other from this menu seems unnatural. I won't go back to Spoon. I have lost some faith in Chef Restauranteur Ducasse. Maybe the business has gotten too big and the focus has been lost. spoon-restaurant.com
