Price-Point Does NOT Match Experience.
This experience was the ultimate disappointment. After dining at many of the Alinea group restaurants, we were so excited to experience the St. Clair Supper Club! We purchased tickets for the Valentine's Day pre fixe menu for just under $400 for two (wine pairing not included). Let's start with being seated: the tables were so uncomfortably close together that you could not be seating without disrupting both tables dining next to you - as in they had to physically put down their silverware and pickup and move their table. Yikes. I am typically okay with close quarters but this was brutal. We started with the oysters - phenomenal, followed by the shrimp cocktail which was very fresh. We were utterly disappointed by the caesar salad as it was very "okay;" I find chopped iceberg lettuce to be underwhelming at this price point. The mussels were seasoned exceptionally well (my husband who doesn't like mussels enjoyed these!). The pasta was good, and the meat was fine although there just wasn't anything special about the meat... nothing special at all. We poured our own wine almost the entire dinner which we are very okay doing but the service and staff overall felt unengaged and overwhelmingly busy. This was SO disappointing as a reflection of the Alinea group.

Mainly one item on a menu, it better be good. Roast beef was superb. Texture, flavor and temperature were all exactly right. Excellent meal. One person had daily special of salmon. Nice Caesar Salad. Plenty to share. Brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes were great. Desserts were not up to rest of meal. Nice drinks. Corkage a bit pricey but so is everything.
Be the first to ReplyA throwback to Wisconsin's iconic supper clubs
My wife and I weren't discouraged by the negative reviews we had seen. We decided to make reservations at the St. Clair Supper Club because it is operated by Grant Achatz and Nick Kokonas, two of Chicago's restaurant giants, and we were lured by the prime rib-only menu, a welcome change of pace from the mostly pasta and steak eateries that dominate the Chicago restaurant scene. Give 'em a chance, I said. OK, my wife said. We weren't disappointed. Perhaps they've cleaned up their act. Whatever, we certainly enjoyed our fine dining experience at St. Clair Supper Club. Located at 951 West Fulton Market, in the heart of the historic meat packing neighborhood, in the West Loop, at Morgan, it is open from 5:30 to 9 Monday and Tuesday and 5 to 9 Thursday through Sunday. Led by Achatz and Kokonas, it is Alinea Group's latest project, converting an old space below the celebrated Roister restaurant into a Wisconsin-style supper club. To access the club, enter through Roister. Daily specials are offered, including fish fry, Italian dinner, roast pork, fish, king crab, chef's special and lobster mac and cheese. But we were eager to sample the house's specialty, rib rib. It's the only meat they sell. It's served medium rare and cut to order. We started with shrimp cocktail and Caesar salad. My wife chose the Queen-sized helping of prime rib with bearnaise sauce, mashed potatoes and cream spinach. I opted for the King-sized serving of prime rib with bearnaise sauce, mashed potatoes and green beans with Dijon and pecans. We can't remember the last time we had prime rib but it was never like this. For dessert, we shared portions of caramel apple bread pudding and chocolate cherry torte. This supper club concept may be an experiment but Alinea Group seems to know what it's doing.

We were very much looking forward to enjoying a prime rib dinner at a restaurant that only serves prime rib and after our experience, none of us would ever go back. I had better prime rib at a Vegas buffet than at this restaurant. The prime rib completely lacked flavor and was not seasoned at all. The horseradish cream sauce was like eating whipped cream and don’t bother asking for real horseradish because they don’t have any. The Brussel sprouts were way too salty. The best part of the meal was the dinner rolls and mashed potatoes. The service also lacked luster. When our waiter asked us how was our meal, we replied “it was just ok” to which he said “just okay?” and walked away without asking for feedback. We were also finishing up our conversation at the table and they came and cleared all the water glasses and basically told us to get the hell out. I would like to blind fold Grant Achatz and serve him the food we had last night and see what he would say. Don’t bother with this restaurant. There’s WAY better prime rib in Chicago that you can properly enjoy.

Let me start by saying that I love all of Grant Achatz’ restaurants that I have been to. We’ve been to Alinea several times and loved it every single time. Next is fantastic. The Aviary is awesome. The St. Clair Supper Club is not in the same universe as these other restaurants. I was really looking forward to it. We took our moms and thought this was right up their alley. We are from northern Illinois/southern Wisconsin and are big fans of the Saturday night supper club. We enjoy those frequently. We were highly disappointed in this experience. We started the night with brandy old fashions. Those were good. That was the highlight of my experience. Next we had shrimp cocktail and crab cakes. The cocktail sauce tasted like straight ketchup. The shrimp was cooked well, but had a strange film on it. The crab cakes were not great. They tasted very peppery and over cooked. For dinner, we all had prime rib. My mother-in-law asked for it to be medium since the menu stated that it would only be medium-rare. They weren’t sure if they could do that, which I understand, but stated that they could give her an end piece. She was happy with that. The rest of us were looking forward to a nice medium rare cut of prime rib. When our dinners arrived, none of them were medium rare. In fact, most of them were between medium-well and well done. To top it off, they were cold, and topped with a brown gravy. They didn’t have fresh horseradish, but did have a horseradish cream sauce. It tasted like sour cream. Literally. The bearnaise sauce tasted vinegary and was inedible. For sides, we had mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts (which were good), green beans (which were undercooked), and mushrooms (which had a funny taste). In the end, we were all so unhappy with our meals, we didn’t even order dessert or take home any leftovers. I’m so disappointed, I can’t even explain it. I’m okay for spending good money on a nice dinner. We do it quite often. But, our bill was $800 and it wasn’t even decent. I will not be back, sad to say. We should have chose Roister instead. I would not recommend St. Clair Supper Club to anyone.
Be the first to ReplyAverage at best
The food and atmosphere were average at best. Nothing exceptional here except our waitress. If it weren’t for her our whole dining experience would have been a loss.

What can you expect from a basement one floor below a Michelin star restaurant? Great and simple cocktails, old school dining and oh yeah popovers. My wife and I love Chicago dining, and St Clair doesn’t disappoint. The prime rib was excellent and the lamb...Jebus!!!
Job well done! Another win for Grant and team. I can’t wait for what’s next 😉!
Service was poor, food was nice but not exceptional
I am not going to get into the whole supper club debate about this place but judged on food and service - it was average.
Our server really showed little care and attention expected. No real explanation of the dishes, taking our plates away with a rather rushed felling and, rather inexplicably, tried to force out every drop of the bottle of red wine we had by treating it like a ketchup bottle!
Yes, we had to give the table back at 7.15pm but we easily did that, with time to spare. Service deficiencies just spoilt it all.
Food-wise - we had the Caesar salad - good but too salty, the prawn cocktail - good and the Oyster Rocka's - good. For main we had the striploin with sides. Meat was excellent, mushroom side was too salty and the 50:50 mash was distinctly average.
Dessert - the Grasshopper pie - just plain average. The texture was just wrong in the filling and should really have been lighter - like a mousse.
Overall - average at best. Shame really.
The food is good, but quirky doesn't have to mean uncomfortable
Had we known that plunking down $50 in advance for a reservation would not entitle us to sit at a table, we would not have gone. Now that we know, we won't go back. If we were 30-something hipsters, we might have enjoyed sitting at the bar watching the chefs prepare meals. We're not. We're 60-something suburbanites with bad backs who were looking for something fun for a birthday dinner. Sitting at a bar where my wife's legs weren't long enough to touch the foot rail, with a three-inch padded bar rail that made reaching down to cut your meat painfully awkward is not my definition of fun. Make no mistake -- the food is quite good. We knew in advance it was a limited menu with a limited set of cocktails. The wine list looks impressive, but we did not know they have no wine by the glass. Our server was attentive, but how hard is it to be knowledgeable about a menu with 3 entrees and 6 sides. I know of many other places in Chicago where we could have had as fine a meal, in more comfort, for the same $$ or less.
Be the first to ReplyToo pretentious for a Wisconsin Supper club it insists upon itself.
Food was fantastic but don’t understand how you can run out of one of only 2 entrees on the menu at the prices they charge. Very pretentious environment where they were not very accommodating which is the opposite of a Wisconsin Supper club. Way too complicated to order the prime rib which is the only entree on the menu. It insists upon itself.
