Good and simple food
Our choice goes to this 'modern traditional' restaurant as defined by the Michelin guide. Simple place, well frequented, fast service, the waiters are kind, the maitre is kind but not too much (ready to correct any pronunciation defects of us Italians). The starters are good and at the same time simple, perhaps a little too simple... The courses are appreciable, prepared with good quality ingredients and without too many frills. The only flaw found is in the service of the wine which is brought to the table directly in the glass and is not poured from the bottle. Overall, a good experience that I recommend to anyone who wants to dine in a non-touristy place.
Be the first to ReplyWill be back again and again. Just awesome.
Amazing menu and team. We had a nice selection of the small plates and 2 of the large to share with a side and was shocked that our bill with drinks was so reasonable. For the quality of food and service I feel we got a bargain. Will be back as soon as I can. Defo worth the trip down from the midlands

I do like this brand, we had a lovely meal for lunch today. Friendly kind and caring service. Really nothing to fault. A recommendation that is given without reservation.

Good vibe in this bright minimalist room. Friendly waiting staff. Interesting menu, best bit today was the pate 👏 Always something different to try.
Be the first to ReplyThe Best Nose/Tail
Excellent nose to tail dining. St John continues to lead the movement and after many years remains innovative. Delicious food, excellent service and a very good wine list.

We came here on the assumption that bone marrow was on the evening menu. Excited we came early for dinner rez. Not. The manager on duty sat for a chat as we enjoyed our wine. This was one of AB’s fav stops back in the day for its unique nose to tail dining ethos. Did I I say ethos? Wat? The manager was kind enough to transfer our rez to St John Restaurant by Smithfield Market. Much appreciated. So off we walked. Thank youse 🤙🏼
Be the first to ReplyClassy but unpretentious restaurant.
Excellent restaurant serving perfectly cooked fish. The ambiance is unpretentious and the service from Ronnie was friendly, professional and seamlessly efficient: not only did the food arrive in good time but the bill appeared as if through her powers of telepathy. We ate and were served well: it proved to be a very pleasant experience.
Be the first to ReplyAnother excellent meal at St John
Always exceptional. St John never fails to deliver. First time at Bread and Wine, a cosier version of Smithfield.
Be the first to ReplyVery good
Our second visit to Bread and Wine and I think we prefer it to the original restaurant in Smithfield, which we have been long time fans of. Once again we enjoyed the very friendly service from the young staff, the delightfully British menu and the comfortable surroundings. Recommended
Be the first to ReplyTwo words can sum up this place: "must try"
I took my wife here for our anniversary a few weeks ago because it has always been one of my favourites and it certainly did not disappoint. The food was impeccable as always, especially if you embrace the nose to tail ethos. The wine list offers great interest at a variety of price points, and the service was absolutely on point and very generous in honour of the occasion. It is also in a great part of London to explore (although I may be biased, having once lived around the corner). In short, I wholeheartedly recommend eating here!
Be the first to ReplyPerfect lunch
In London for a theatre visit and to visit my ‘hipster’ son who lives in Shoreditch We are ‘from the North’ and regularly eat out in quality restaurants so after being initially pleased with his lunchtime booking at St John’s Bread and Wine I became a little concerned when I read some negative on line reviews I shouldn’t have been concerned, in short the meal was a triumph Great food at reasonable prices The 2 highlights for me were the smoked mackerel and the crispy pig skin A really good ambiance with attentive but not intrusive service made this an ideal lunchtime meal
Be the first to ReplySkip it if you are not a hipster
So this is hipster place, which is fine, if the food was better. And they added a bit of a service. We got there at 8pm and were seated at 8.15. Only at about 830 someone came to take our order or wine. By that time, some of the menu items were not available. And the pig head is not that. Its just ham hock while listed as pig head on the menu. I went for grilled ox tongue that tasted like bologna. I left about half on the plate. I asked for some mayo for my chips and was brought aioli instead. My other half had faggots, which she said were great, but we both agreed that the 3 half of Jerusalem artichokes bathed in caramelized onions were so-so. The service was really terrible. We didn't get our food until about 9.15. The service staff seemed apathetic and ruining the place for everyone.
Be the first to ReplyLovely meal - best razor clams we've ever eaten
We had a lovely evening here, the service, atmosphere and food were all great. Stand outs for us were the Welsh rarebit which was scrumptious and the razor clams, we've eaten a lot of razor clams in the past, usually in Spain but these were next level. Highly recommended.

Great atmosphere and the food was excellent, staff friendly and helpful. Great night out for my birthday
Be the first to ReplySo, so good
I have walked past here many a time before shopping in Rough Trade East round the corner and decided to finally try it tonight (Shane about the shambles trying to get home on our train network after), the service was really good and friendly and all three courses I had were top notch: surprised by some of the negative comments on here, I can’t fault anything I had but I don’t know what the other people were expecting: it’s not your run of the mill restaurant (don’t worry folks, Harvester and Toby Inns are still available for you more discerning gourmets 🤣) but I’m glad I tried it.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the worst meals of my life!
I was taken here by a visitor who let a graduate student choose anyplace for lunch.. what a nightmare! it is expensive, tiny portions, weird food saturated with mustard, terrible patronizing service - I'd give it a minus star if I could. To top this off, a day after eating here I was admitted to hospital where I languished for 3+ days, wiht acute, severe gastroenteritis. Now, 10 days later, I am finally recovered. The service was rude and scarce: we were given three smallish pieces of bread and ONE pat of butter. when I asked for more butter the waitress literally tossed another small dish with one pat on our table and glowered at us. later on I asked for some spoons so we could serve ourselves some of the lamb and whatever kind of grain was under it, she about 10 minutes later, haughtily dropped three spoons, clattering, on our table. Not only was the service terrible but the food practically inedible, and I love to experiment with foods. But this is too much - and SO expensive for what you get. I am truly surprised at its reputation. was at a party a few days ago (not eating, but just visiting wiht friends) and when they head about this experience, one said, without my having mentioned the name of hte restaurant that made me ill, "Wow, that sounds like it might have been St. John and Bread"! Needless to say, I won't be coming ack.
Be the first to ReplyCasual fine dining! Great food and service
Amazing meal! Casual but high quality fantastic food! All the ingredients were such high quality, very simple yet prepared incredibly! Fun to share. The rabbit pie was absolutely delicious. Definitely recommend
Be the first to ReplyGood food in a cool atmosphere
Service efficient but friendly. It was swelteringly hot and I asked if the red I had chosen would suit being chilled. Waiter said he’s ask what the other staff felt and came back saying they recommended not but here’s an ice cooler if I want to try. The staff were right I think but I got to experiment - I liked this approach. Starter was a cod roe which was recommended as “typical”. It came with poached egg and was great. The main course was a duck confit served in a broth with summer vegetables. This was also delicious - particularly the vegetables. For dessert - rice pudding with honeycomb. Nicely done and not too sweet. Anchovy toast was disappointing bread was dry and the spread was very thin. Bread was superb. Took an Eccles cake for the next day which was of course…the best Eccles cake I’ve ever had. Overall recommended but on this visit I wasn’t wowed but I’ll go back hoping to be. Good place.

Dined there tonight. Curious because I have seen the place for so many years. Wine was good. But the food was killed in oil, bacon, mayonnaise and cheese. Quite bad for a nordic taste.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food and service
Had a wonderful meal and lovely service. Every dish was delicious, especially the homemade strawberry ice-cream and bakery. The staff are friendly with excellent service. Highly recommend a visit.
Be the first to ReplyOverrated and overpriced
Food was very good, however the service was subpar. Rushed and rude. Moreover, upon leaving they refused to call us a taxi, saying it was “old fashion” and that we should just call an Uber like else. Overrated and overpriced Do NOT go!
Be the first to ReplyInteresting Experience
St John’s Bread & Wine offer an eclectic mix of dishes that change daily. You are Encouraged to choose several as sharing plates. The portions were particularly generous. They make you work for your supper. Whole crab, literally is just that! Unprepared. Anchovy toast is a thick slab of bread, slathered in anchovy paste. The chefs seem to delight in the stranger ingredients and combinations. St John’s is not ideal if you have dietary restrictions. As the menu changes daily, they struggle to tell you which dishes contain gluten. Although the staff did try really hard, it would be so much easier if allergens were noted on the menu.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced
I had high expectations for this restaurant after hearing great things. We came for lunch, the service was attentive. The menu had some interesting choices on it. We had the cauliflower, mackerel, and the sea bass. The cauliflower was alright, a bit boring, the mackerel was delicious. I ordered the sea bass for 28 pounds thinking that it would be a decent portion. A tiny fillet arrived with some shaved fennel and arugula. While the sea bass was tasty I cannot wrap my head around how Londoners can enjoy paying this much for a tiny portion with no substantial side. Maybe this is just how London is but I felt it was extremely overpriced and overall I left disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyDistinctly unremarkable but will try again
I was little disappointed. Had massive expectations for this place having read about it for years in the Sunday broadsheets and Anthony Bourdain hailing it as the restaurant of his dreams in his YouTube documentary of his London visit back in about 2002. We went for the Grilled Ox Heart, Lamb's Tongue, Terrine, Mince on Dripping Toast and a several sides. It was all just ok and I’m wondering if we ordered the wrong choices. I so wanted it to blow me away but it was distinctly unremarkable. I’ll give it another try, sure. Nice old school decor and the have Guinness, which is a massive tick!

I go to bread and wine time to time and I always enjoy my time, the wine is great, the food menu keep changing so if you think the menu isn’t great that day (can happen) means you must visit another day but I recommend you to try things you wouldn’t usually try. Minimum 5 dishes per person and don’t miss out the desserts - they are outstanding! I’m looking forward to be visiting again soon.
