Don’t buy there
My recent visit to Sur La Table turned from excitement to sheer frustration. I purchased a KitchenAid mixer, which, to my dismay, was malfunctioning from the start. Trusting Sur La Table's reputation, I returned to the store, expecting a straightforward resolution. However, the situation only worsened. The staff initially dismissed my concerns, claiming it was a 'newer model' and implying that I misunderstood the product's functioning. It was only when I insisted on comparing it with another mixer from a new box that they reluctantly agreed. This revealed the truth – the mixer was indeed defective, and I was right all along. What added insult to injury was the store manager's indifference. Despite the clear evidence and their initial mistake, the manager didn’t even bother to speak with us or address the issue personally. This lack of professionalism and customer care is unacceptable, especially in a high-end retail environment. This experience was not only about a defective product but also about a store's failure to own up to their mistake and treat their customers with the respect they deserve. The dismissive attitude of the staff and the manager's apathy have left me deeply disappointed. I expected much more from Sur La Table, known for quality products and service. This incident has severely dented my trust in them. Future customers, beware. Rating: 1/5 Stars
Be the first to ReplyNo water at a cooking class?
I purchased months in advance, a Christmas Eve cooking class as a date night for my new boyfriend. Tamales. On arrival we were informed that there was no water which affected the experience utmost. NEVER given the option to cancel or reschedule or even a discount on the experience. No water meant no bathroom access, no drinks and no ability to steam the tamales. Have you ever worked with masa and not had the option to clean your hands? I'm so sad for the young instructor that not only was an inept teacher but had zero power to reschedule this class. Additionally, this gift experience for Xmas eve for my boyfriend was hugely embarrassing.

We paid for 17 people that had cost us 2805$. The group enjoyed the cooking, but and that is a huge but - the team that instructed us was strict and not friendly, they didn’t try to make it fun in any sort of way. The food served was embarrassing( we paid for 17, and we came 15) a very small amount. People went out to eat pizza afterwards. Each person had one chicken leg to eat, barely. I’m sending photos of what was on each person's plate. It’s crazy that it has cost us so much and the food provided was so little. The crew could have made extra food in advance if we didn’t have time to cook it ourselves. Each person got one piece of chicken. It was embarrassing. Also, have a look at the poor dessert they served.

My wife and I took a cooking class in the W. 57th St. store called cooking with wine this past Saturday, September 10. We were in the 7 PM class and to call it cooking with wine is disingenuous to say the least. We didn’t cook with wine at all. Chef Jake, who is nice enough, did all the cooking. All we did was chop a couple of vegetables and mix premeasured ingredients. It was very disappointing and we heard such good things about these classes. I’m sorry to say we would not a class again. And, we would discourage others from doing so if they asked about the classes. It was a lot of money for almost nothing.
Be the first to ReplyGreat concept - more vegetarian please!
Sir la table cooking classes is a really great and fun concept. Teams of four people putting together the full meal. More vegan / vegetarian options please! …or a team of 2!

My friends and I had fun cooking at this venue. My friends have tried cooking classes here couple times but this was my first time taking a cooking lesson. So, I was excited! It was my birthday present from my friend's mother. I was so happy to receive this birthday gift! The menu was supposed to be scallop, but I believe they switched this due to the 40th Anniversary of Sur La Table. So the menu we had that day was Coq Au Vin or Chicken in wine sauce. Chef Celeste was our Chef and she was assisted by her Sous-chef and the team. They had a great team. The chicken wasn't the only one we had to prepare but we also had a chance to bake some chocolate soufflé with salted caramel, woohoo! I can't believe I could learn two things. One thing is hard enough to learn, imagine making two dishes in one class, oh no! However, I did it! With the proper method and teaching technique, my team and I were able to follow. I burned the chicken a little bit though, but that's ok, it's part of the learning process. Chef Celeste taught us more than just cooking. As I said before, she taught us the cooking technique and gave us some great tips to have the best results. Our final results looked great! I just need to start making them at home couple times. While the food stayed in the oven, we were escorted to the store area. Chef talked to us about some of the helpful tools that we could use with our cooking preparation. By the way we also received a handout of our menu to take home in case we want to remake this dish at home. After explaining the tools in the store area we went back to the kitchen and had our dinner together. Marvelous! There's no doubt this is one of my great cooking experiences. I'd like to try making other dishes too, so I could cook for Hubby. This class consists of four groups and each group has four cooks and I was one of them. What a great experience! Thanks Chef and the crew!

I took one cooking class here last month. It was fun. Our chef instructor was really nice. I had a great time and the food we cooked was awesome. I can't wait to make the recipe for my family. And I can't wait for the next classes.

Was a great menu and a friendly chef. Food was really good and recipes easy to follow. For a beginner it would be good but I was not challenged at all. Was a good way to spend a night alone in NYC but I'd not rush back. A glass wine with the food might have been nice. Be ready to stand while you eat your meal

My wife and son have taken at least 7 classes in our last two trips to Manhattan. They love it. The only complaint they have is that some of the other students selfishly hog ingredients. If you are from outside the United States, you can book your class using the zip code of your NYC hotel or place of residence. Otherwise, you will encounter difficulty with their reservation system and may have to wait upon arrival, if spots are still available.

Family experience with love and laughter where you eat what you cook while learning the art of cooking. Super experience and not expensive. Loved it!

While visiting NYC we decided to take a cooking class at Sur La Table on 57th St. As we already had dinner plans, we decided to take an afternoon class called Sunday Supper. Chef Scott ran the 2 hour class and what fun we had! We learned the proper way to cut, chop, roll dough, lay out a chicken, season everything, and then we were able to taste our brined chicken, seasoned green beans and rhubarb galette (open pie). It was fantastic and lots of fun! This was a hands on class and Chef Scott was a superb instructor. He made it fun and informative. Plus we got a discount on any purchases, which they shipped to our home. We will definitely do this again!
