Something new and good, even if carryout
I showed up early, no reservation so I wasn't surprised that they told me no openings, but that was because I was solo. They had openings if I was a party of 2 or more. There were even spots at the head sushi bar, but for all I know they were reserved already. Once I asked if they did she said no and walked away. A few minutes later another lady came and told me thirty minutes which is fine, but i decided from that first interaction I'd just order to go. So if solo, make a reservation. Everyone there was loving their food so I thought worth a try. I got the uni (2 pieces) and the salmon egg (2 pieces). I think it was about 40 dollars total. Both listed as market so I was unsure till I paid. I have never tried either before so I can't really comment on quality or taste but the rice was perfect, and it turns out a kind of like both in a way. I would go back, with a reservation, and hope everyone was a nice as they were after that initial greeting, as it appeared they typically are.
Be the first to ReplyGreat sushi and sashimi!
Excellent sushi and sashimi. I would have given this place five stars except their hot foods (such as teriyaki and tempura) were just ok. Their sashimi and sushi were five stars however. Friendly staff and very clean space and bathrooms.
Be the first to ReplySimply one of the best sushi bars
This is one of the best sushi bars Iโve ever eaten. Iโve been eating at sushi bars for 55 years and the experience was just incredible. My wife and I ended up eating there three nights in a row while visiting La Jolla. I could just keep repeating this for the rest of my review, because any details I give are not really as important as the fact that the service was incredible and the food is incredible. If you are in the area, I highly recommend this restaurant and I often dream of going back there. I have a joke with my wife that we should just fly to La Jolla so we can eat there again! Highly recommended. Good luck getting a reservation.

Without question, the food is outstanding. Simply the best. Exceptional. Words do not describe, etc. etc. etc. And the service - same. Over the top. Efficient. Professional. Courteous and respectful. Why not five stars? For ambiance, this place is ... ambiance challenged. It's in a downtrodden area, simply a storefront next to a downscale convenience store that caters to San Diego's downtrodden (read - lots of alcohol/drug derelicts). Dodge the shady characters in the parking lot - the food is well worth it - but no right-minded person would ever venture into the parking lot, were it not for the food. Just hope that your car will not be up on blocks when you return. Inside, minimal decor, and not much to diffuse the sound. IMPORTANT - either have a reservation, or you're SOL. Fortunately, both times, we've had reservations. But the table choice is a crap shoot, assigned by the iron fisted front-of-house dictator. The table is critical, since all but a few are very close together. You better enjoy your neighbors, or your dining experience could be painful. Meaning - have you ever dined in the middle of a day care center? No? Well, here's your chance. We're not sure what toddlers eat sushi, but both times that we have been, the place seems like a toddler day care center. Strollers, toddlers, screaming babies - you name it. Meaning, this fine dining experience turns into Chuck E Cheese. Technically, that's not the restaurant's fault - if Karen and Biff want to bring young Bryce to the sushi restaurant, then strap the lad to the stroller and roll him in. Who wouldn't want to enjoy their $$$ushi roll with a healthy dose of screaming baby and smelly diaper? Maybe next time, we'll bring some noise-cancelling headphones. Because the food really is worth it - it's that good. Maybe, just maybe however, the front dictator could try a bit harder to space those seeking a quiet, peaceful meal, from The Baby.

The best sushi in San Diego,. Great flavors, fresh and attentive staff. The location is next to a 7-11 which is really quite cool because many places in San Diego tout their views and skylines and water, etc.
Be the first to Replythe diet is over
Today my 6-month diet is definitely over with this sushi restaurant, nobody compares to it when it comes to serving fish
Be the first to ReplyHidden Gem
A recent visit to San Diego landed me at Sushi Ota. Hidden in a strip mall was the most amazing sushi! Reservations highly recommended at 11:30 am the restaurant already was packed!
Be the first to ReplyGood basic sushi
Making reservation was difficult and the parking there is so tight, I get always nervous about parking. In fact, there are many elderly ppl tried to park couple times then give up! We were sitted right on time immediately. I noticed that they just increased the price. ( I heard that Chef Ota recently retired and the business was bought by his assistant chef.) The sushi was very good and still has good value. However, it is not a fancy one of kind experience. It is basic and they deliver good value meal. We come here often.

Some of the very best sushi that I have ever eaten; the salmon belly was incredibly buttery and came in a chunk that was significantly larger than I had anticipated; the uni was also quite tasty. The only slight criticism was that the soft-shell crab should have been cut a little larger, but other than that, every single mouthful of everything was amazing.
Be the first to ReplyGreat sushi an ambiance
My son and I just returned from eating dinner at Sushi Ota. It was fantastic. We felt like we were back in a Tokyo izakaya. Everything we ordered was fresh and tasty. The sake ( from around Fukuoka) was excellent. Service was extraordinary. Would not hesitate to come back to this restaurant and would highly recommend to anyone looking for excellent sushi and other Japanese delights.

My husband and I ordered Omakase and two bottles of sake. A family with 2 kids under 2 were seated next to us at 9:15pm on a Friday night. Kids were not happy and werenโt quiet about it either. Mother projectile vomited all over herself and the table. Still one of the best meals of my life. Thatโs saying something.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding
This was the best sushi we have ever eaten. It was fresh, and we'll presented. We had made a reservation ,however, the restaurant lost it, or couldn't find it. I fortunately had the co formation number. Other than that, it was all good.
Be the first to ReplyMy favorite restaurant ever!
I love this place! I have been twice in a week and I will happily go for a third! The food is delicious and top quality. The services was incredible. And talk about bang for your buck- Incredible food with a side affordability. I recommend this restaurant to everyone. I love the location. Hole in the wall restaurant, appears unassuming but donโt let they deter you. You will be in for a beautiful surprise. Definitely give it a go! Favorite dishes: - yellow tail Serrano - double double spicy tuna!! - beef Teriyaki - Crunchy tempura
Be the first to ReplyBest sushi, efficient service, bustling lively experience!
If youโre in San Diego, and you want sushi, GO NOW to Sushi Ota!! It was fantastic! You arrive at a small place, next to a convenience store - yep, right place. It looks unassuming, you have arrived for an early meal, but when you open the door, you discover that itโs hopping inside! Clearly this is the place people come for sushi! They do a robust business for dine in as well as take out. The staff was nice and efficient. Food wise, the sushi stands out, but it doesnโt stand alone! The edamame, tempura, and cooked items we had were beyond compare. My husband had one of the special combo meals - sashimi, tempura and a couple cooked items, including salmon. Iโm a little less adventurous, but loved the edamame, veggie and shrimp tempura as well as a couple sushi rolls. Iโd call our meal and experience excellent! Believe the reviews!
Be the first to ReplyAsk Anyone: Best Sushi in San Diego
I moved to San Diego recently and became aware of Ota Sushi early on -- always described as "the best." If you are like me, you may be a bit skeptical at first, since what constitutes the best can be highly subjective.
Having said that, I assure you it is better than any other Sushi restaurant I have visited here so far -- and I don't anticipate that my opinion will change!
See pics of the menus for details on what is in store for you there. Read on for more on Ota's other attractive features.
As is true in many cases -- such as Sushi Gen, L.A.' s most highly regarded Sushi restaurant -- Ota is located in an innocuous, unpretentious location. Once there, though, you find yourself in a comfortable, stylish dining area featuring roomy seating. This is definitely not a place where you are crammed in elbow to elbow.
Not to resort to a cliche, but Ota is all about service, service, service. The restaurant is exceedingly well staffed and so the way you are served easily. If you want to be spoiled, you have found the right place. And if you want to enjoy a remarkable lunch despite your hurry on a busy day...again, you are in the right place.
One mark of a restaurant that has earned its stars is that you really must make a reservation. Time of day or lunch/dinner doesn't matter...be sure to make that reservation. I met my lunch companion today at 11:30, assuming that the two of us would have the place more or less to ourselves. Not so! The dining room was full by noon.
Last remarks:
This restaurant has been in business for 30+ years, which makes Ota the longest standing Sushi restaurant in town. I commented on service above...to that I would add reputation, reputation, reputation.
Central location in San Diego and close-in parking are additional pluses.
Best Sushi In San Diego
It was hard to get a table, but it was worth it. Although the cuisine was top shelf, the staff was not very friendly.

really loved everything and enjoyed the food. the atmosphere is fantastic and the staff is friendly and helpful with no complaints
Be the first to ReplyIncredible experience
This was an incredible experience, and some of the best sushi I've ever had. Service was wonderful, quick and friendly. This was well worth the two-day wait for a reservation.
Be the first to ReplyToo much Mayo
Very fresh fish, no doubt. The salmon is the highlight, whether in a roll or nigiri.
But the spicy tuna is overwhelmed by a mayo creaminess that itโs the dominate flavor.
Neutral reaction to this placeโฆbut disappointing for how expensive.
So Good!
The food and service were wonderful! Everything was clean and COVID compliant. I would definitely go back!
Be the first to ReplyStill the best
Its been about 2 years since I was here. Lots has changed with the outdoor seating options but luckily lots has stayed the same as in the amazing sushi. The food is SO GOOD. And reasonably priced for being the best in town. I'll be back, again!
Be the first to ReplyGood but overrated and rushed
This is a nice sushi place however it is very definitely overrated and although the sushi was good it was disappointing to see that for this level of restaurant they actually had some items with imitation crab on the menu which doesnโt fit with this sort of place and the โcultโstatus that it has. The other thing is although the service was good they tend to rush you and granted they are very busy you almost feel that if you go back and order something from the appetizer menu you are putting them out-My daughter ordered the fried jidori chicken which although very crispy on the outside was actually undercooked inside causing a little bit of a stomach upset for a few days-God forbid we would have the guts to send it back-We were almost scared as we had to book a week in advance and two days before they were calling to make sure that we will be coming-So my take is go ahead and try it because itโs so highly rated there are some very good things on the menu but I have to say that at those prices there is a lot of good competition sushi in San Diego
Be the first to ReplyBest sushi in southern california!
The quality of absolutely every piece of sushi surpassed even the best sushi in Los Angeles. Best sushi in Southern California, hands down!
Be the first to ReplySuper fresh fish
My husband and I visited Sushi Ota last week in honor of his birthday. We've lived in San Diego for two years now and have been searching for our favorite sushi restaurants and I think we've found it. The fish was fresh and delicious and perfectly presented. We especially enjoyed the sashimi. The exterior of the restaurant is unremarkable and a little hard to spot at night. Inside we found a warm and comfortable ambiance with professional and friendly staff members.
Sushi Ota is a very special restaurant; we'll certainly go again soon.
