I lived in Japan before Japanese restaurants, and sushi in particular, got so popular in San Diego. In Tokyo and Kyoto I learned what the best Japanese food looks and tastes like, as friends took me to what must be some of the most wonderful (and expensive) restaurants in the world. As a result, Japanese restaurants in the USA almost always disappoint me. Todokoro is an exception: the food and service are exceptional; the decor is relaxingly authentic. My companion said that his tempura was the best he'd ever tasted. My chirashi (generous slices of raw fish on a bowl of seasoned rice) couldn't have been better. One of these days I want to try their omakase ("leave it up to the chef"). If you appreciate the real thing, you'll appreciate Tadokoro.
