This is more than a restaurant, it is an experience and is worth every penny! We went to celebrate our anniversary and everything about the evening was perfect. We loved the speakeasy vibe of the secret door and welcome area. I enjoyed the Omakase with a beverage pairing and my boyfriend had the sake pairing. Everything was next level. As a sushi lover, I can confidently say this was the best sushi I have ever had. The drinks were also amazing and we enjoyed the most delicious sake we have ever had. Our bartender Max truly created the perfect pairings. I will forever dream about this Omakase experience. Everything was delicious, I could not even begin to pick a favorite. Cannot wait to come back here!!

If you have the money and are a biiiiiig foodie, I highly advise that you treat yourself to this amazing experience. It's even more enjoyable if you bring loved ones. Each chef (I should say master artist) was precise, and their timing of the courses were perfectly in sync. Each bite was a perfect journey through flavors. Max's bartending was impeccable. They made a yummy mocktail for me, and was so kind. My first omakase experience but not my last. 10/10.

I came here with my friend on Saturday and we both had an amazing time. It's a bit on the pricey side. With the tasting, added 3 courses, 20 percent service charge and gratuity, my bill came out to close to $400. It was fun. We had like 21 courses. The bartender Matthew is such a sweetheart. I don't drink so he made me a nonalcoholic black cherry soda. It looked like an old fashioned with a round cube. All the food was delicious and each tasting is 10 people to 4 staffs. Lots of interaction. Negatives: the venue is hella ugly. It gives off Barney's Beanery meets 90s dive bar. And the 20 percent service charge doesn't go to the staff. It apparently goes to the company, which I thought that was really tacky. I don't know why I'm paying an extra 20 percent to the company. It should go to the staff. So make sure to tip.
Be the first to ReplyOh geez, people.
Did you vote for Biden too? The emperor has no clothes and apparently most people are SO impressed by some dark venue behind hidden doors. The servers and chefs were great, but the food was barely better than any mid sushi bar. What a waste of $800+. It would've been over $1,000 but they removed the $105/person surcharge for the truffles & caviar addition which was unannounced and imperceptible.

What can I say about sushi by scratch except everyone should experience it at least once especially if you appreciate sushi. I brought my husband here for his bday. It was a pop up at the Beverly hills hotel and everything about it was amazing. From the location being in a penthouse suite, to the decor, the service and the sushi! Omg, the best sushi I will ever have in the United States. I still think about the sushi!

I am a sucker for some good sushi. The experience and service is also excellent here. Great sushi chefs and sushi bar ambiance is simply iconic. Parking is in the underground lot -- but rlly you should Uber because their drinks are great lol. You are seated at the front bar where you are served the apps and welcome drink. Then you enter the actual sushi bar for your meal. You have a name plate right in front of you which is such a nice personal touch. I loved that. The sushi pieces come after a nice show of cutting, torching, and etc right in front of your face! I love how they put on a show!! It's quite special how they make the whole experience so worth the price you pay for. You can also get the meal with alcohol pairing. Overall such a magical experience from beginning to finish. I had such a good time :) if you wanna go i would definitely recommend! They also have other locations in Chicago and others... great job, sushi by scratch!
Be the first to ReplyWe had so much fun.
It was my first time having omakase. I understand it's not a traditional style omakase- but I'm all for it. Loved the unique flavors and twists on it. Can't wait to go back.

I ventured with my wife for a very early Valentine's dinner recently. This sushi speak easy has been on my to do list for a long time and I'm pleased we were able to visit this location. The entire staff was amazing, you're definitely here to drop some bills but have a great time. You immediately feel welcomed in this cozy setting , there were only 6 of us for our seating and the staff knew all our names and the reason why we decided to spend the night for dinner to treat ourselves for omakase. We were invited to partake in some pre-dinner cocktails and canapes. The reservations will note this is optional. I strongly suggest attending this and mingling with the staff and your guests because you're going to spend probably at least 2 hours with these folks experiencing top quality sushi. I really enjoyed their spin on omakase and sushi. Of course you're getting really high quality ingredients here but the intentionality in every bite, the pacing of the night, and at least during our visit the banter between everyone made this experience extremely memorable. The flow of food is so well thought out and the chefs work as a team to tee up each bite. You can see them set up nigiri, 2-3 rounds ahead, and watching the process is absolutely mesmerizing. Each bite is well explained along with the ingredients, origin and processes of how each nigiri is built. The drinks options are also very appetizing they have options for whiskey flights, sake flights and can craft up some delicious cocktails and non alcoholic options. They also are very considerate of any dietary constraints. Overall, I was extremely pleased with my experience and would come back for a future special occasion.

By far the best omakase experience I've ever had! Every single piece was very thoughtfully curated and absolutely delicious. Flavors were well balanced. Very filling experience overall, I was stuffed by the end. It was hard to pick a favorite because they were all so delicious. Service was spectacular. The sushi chefs seem very experienced and passionate about their work. Every piece comes with a nice explanation about the origin of the fish and the ingredients utilized. Ambiance is great. Very intimate setting, only about 10 guests per time slot. Make sure to make your reservation 1-2 months ahead as it can get very busy!
Be the first to ReplyTerrible sushi.
Experience was ok. But the taste was horrible. First of all they make you wait until 30 min before your meal, so don't go early. It looks like a shady doorway from the outside, no where near the upscale environment inside. No handle, dirty doorway. You think you've shown up to a totally wrong location. Charging premium to take you into an ugly dungeon. They need to change the outside presentation because it's scary and ugly, and you have no idea that it's the correct door because there is no sign. They charge for parking, which should be reimbursed or covered by the restaurant. Back to the food: disgusting taste for "premium" sushi. Chewy, fishy, smelly, garnishes did not compliment the fish. The presentation is good, the chef explains each piece thoroughly. Intimate 10 ppl setting. Good concept, just terrible food. I don't mind paying premium prices if the food is warranted. This place is a joke for people who actually like sushi and appreciate authenticity. The restaurant does not care about your opinion either, because I did leave an honest survey and they couldn't care less to make it right. If you want to go for the hype, go, but if you want to have a good tasting meal, just go to Sugarfish.
Be the first to ReplyMy recent visit to Sushi by Scratch was nothing short of
My recent visit to Sushi by Scratch was nothing short of amazing. We ordered the 17 course omakase, which featured a selection of sushi that included Tessin, Hamachi, Toro, Scallop, Shimaji, Sea Bream, Spot Prawn, Salmon, Albacore, Kanpachi, Akami, Escolar, Wagyu, Bone Marrow, Unagi, and Uni. Each course was a work of art, both visually and in terms of flavor. The sushi was expertly prepared and showcased the freshness of the fish. Each piece was tender and flavorful, and melted in my mouth with every bite. The Wagyu sushi was particularly impressive - it was incredibly tender and flavorful, and the bone marrow added a rich, meaty flavor that complemented the beef perfectly. The staff were knowledgeable and attentive, providing us with detailed descriptions of each course and answering any questions we had. The atmosphere was also very relaxing and inviting, which made for a pleasant dining experience.Overall, I would highly recommend Sushi by Scratch to anyone looking for high-quality sushi. The 17 course omakase was a culinary journey that showcased the skill and expertise of the chef, and the freshness of the fish was evident in every bite. I look forward to returning soon to try more of their dishes. We even had the certificate of Hokkaido Wagyu on hand.
Be the first to ReplyMy wife and I have visited two times now and I'll start off
My wife and I have visited two times now and I'll start off by saying the experience is intended to be intimate with a small seating of ten guests at one tjme. The ambiance is great, and the chefs and quality of fish is incredible. The only reason for not awarding five stars is due to the amount of phone usage by other patrons during this intimate dinner is excessive and really tarnishes the overall experience of this amazing dinner. We had a couple next to us filming each and every minute of the meal from start to finish - every bite preparation, filming the chefs over the bar, to actually consuming the bite. I wouldn't say this is a knock to the restaurant other than maybe suggesting a no filming policy for such an awesome experience. The chefs put an incredible experience together, It's definitely worth going to.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is a joke.
They try real hard to be creative, but it's nothing of the sort. The fish isn't even high quality. I've had better at Sugarfish and Katsuya. The welcome cocktail (basically a shot of juice) before the "journey" of a 17-course omakase is a waste. The "journey" is like climbing Mt Everest in a bathing suit with no oxygen tank. It's painful, actually more laughable, trying to get through it. They describe every piece of fish like it's some masterpiece from the chef. Then you put it in your mouth and half the bites are chewy and a couple even smelly. I blame myself. I looked up the chef afterwards and not before - and realized he's a reality "star" clown. They all get to open restaurants after being on TV I suppose. I found a classic article about his pasta bar (also crap) that everyone should read. I pray this reviewer does one for the sushi bar. It's a classic. Swap out each pasta dish for sushi and this is what you get coming here. theinfatuation.com/austiโฆ

This speakeasy themed omakase spot is definitely an unforgettable experience. First you need to book a month in advance to secure your spot with a $25 holding fee that goes toward your total. The dining room is a bar setting with 10 seats so it's definitely an intimate experience. From the start, you're served a complimentary drink that sets off the mood right. We sat down for the experience and Jason was managing our side of the bar. He was engaging and we will always remember him being part of our dining experience! The bar is set with your name which allows the chefs to be more personable and helps keep any allergies top of mind for them. This 16 course set is written behind the station so you get to see what you're having next. The menu is changed every few months so there's always opportunities to try something new. Each piece came with thoughtful descriptions which showcased the creativity behind its creation. We also opted in to try 2 new experimental pieces. We ended with a refreshing matcha dessert and paired drink option. Overall had a great experience and would recommend this spot to all sushi lovers! Can't wait to come back and see what's next.
Be the first to ReplyMy friends and I have been wanting to go here for a long
My friends and I have been wanting to go here for a long time and when we found a last minute opening we just had to take it. We got lost as we were looking for the place and we ended up and Pasta Bar, but they where kind enough to direct us to where the Sushi Bar was. When we arrived after ringing the doorbell (which I thought was pretty fun), we entered into the waiting area, which is "bar" like. While you wait here you are served a drink that consisted of whiskey and yuzu and other drinks and juices. Since I don't drink she was able to offer me a nonalcoholic drink that had yuzu and citrus juices. Kind of sour but it was good. Once everyone arrived we were directed another room. Each seat had our name so we knew where to sit. Before we began I noticed behind the sushi chefs were all the different courses we were going to eat. The sushi chefs introduced themselves as well as our bartender for the night. The head sushi chef, who is in the middle, explained how the omakase experience will be like. The sushi chef to his left is the one who cuts the fish (this is where me and my friends sat). I notified the sushi chef closest to us if I can omit wasabi from my course (just a preference thing) and he said no problem. I think the head chef forgot as times, so when our sushi chef was serving me the sushi he was able to remove it. All 3 sushi chefs interacted with us, which was fun. After all 16 courses are served they give you the opportunity to add to your order 2 items max. The only thing for me is you order whatever you want but you don't really know how much it cost until you get the bill. I ordered anyways lol. They were all so good so it's hard to choose just 2. I ordered the wagyu and uni . After this you finish off with a small bite of matcha ice cream. Once everything is done, you are served a drink (our bartender came up to me and notified me of our "closing drink" and asked me if which drink I wanted. He was able to get me a nonalcoholic drink). Everyone was able to chill for a bit and we were directed back out to the bar area to pay. (It was a little crowded as the next group of people were waiting there, so it was hard to make your way out. The restroom is located in the bar area. There is only one restroom so you would have to wait once dinner is over. This place is pricey, but if you want to experience a different kind of omakase with premium sushi this is the place to go. I would recommend this place and I would definitely come back again.
Be the first to ReplyYO! I left my engagement ring in the bathroom though.
Haha, silly me. Shout-out to Jason for finding it and letting someone know right away for me to drive back to retrieve it. Now, back to the experience ..Super special thanks to the Sushi by Scratch team! Thank you for my whole birthday dinner experience - it was truly unforgettable from start to end. First off, sign up for their newsletter on their website. Towards the beginning of the month, you will receive an email for when the booking period is open. My dinner was probably booked about a month or so before the actual date. Secondly, they take a deposit to secure your reservation. It was about $50 for both my husband and I, but that money will be used towards your dining bill. And thirdly, based on your bill, 20% of the bill will automatically be applied to the tip for the night - which honestly is definitely well-deserved because of the whole experience. Speakeasy sushi bar vibes! Yes, we thoroughly enjoyed this modern seasonal omakase set. They do accomodate to allergies or minor preferences to certain things. There was a couple who didn't prefer ikura, so the chefs did not put ikura on their pieces. Approached an unmarked door and buzzed the door bell, in which we were greeted by Shyla inside a dimly lit speak easy vibe bar. Shyla offered everyone a non-alcoholic/alcoholic drink for the night, which was super refreshing. My husband and I decided to go the non-alcoholic route for the night. We then walked into the other room where we were greeted by three sushi chefs: Adrian, Willer, and Jason. There was also Keshawn and Oliver who handled the drinks for the night. Every guest had their names written on where they were assigned to sit. I'm so glad we were smack dab in the middle, so we were able to enjoy the whole experience. We had 16 courses of delicious bites. At the end, the chefs asked if we'd like to revisit another other piece. I decided to revisit the uni, while my husband revisted the scallops. You can tell each chef was very skilled in their craft. Willer explained where each course originated from, and what was done to each piece. It was definitely an amazing culinary experience. We also got to know the chefs a little bit, which made the experience more personable. The dessert was also perfect sized. Love every minute of our experience, hands down! Enjoyed it so much that I'd love to visit the Montecito location sometime soon! Thank you, all!

Be the first to ReplyWe had an incredible dinner at Sushi Bar by Scratch.
It is a immersive experience starting from when you ring the doorbell of the unmarked door. Beyond the high quality fish, the chefs enhance those flavors with unique ingredients -- this place is great because it plays with the traditional and untraditional. The chefs and sommelier are down to earth and friendly, not stuffy, and welcome questions about the ingredients.
Be the first to ReplyI love this place.
I come every time the menu changes. Picky eaters should pass on tasting menus, but they accommodate reasonably for allergies.I have a ginger allergy and they always are able to serve me without the ginger. If you're like me--a non alcohol drinker--don't hesitate to ask for a mocktail. They are generally tart to help cleanse the palate. One thing I wish they would improve on, is teach their chefs how to speak clearly and articulate well. Half the time, I have zero clue what they are saying because they eat their words, mumble and do not enunciate well. The food, however, is always a great experience.

Wow. The experience at Sushi-Bar left me speechless. To start off the night, you walk into a speakeasy-like bar and enjoy welcome drinks. The bar transports you to the 20s. And you know what else will transport you throw your own personal culinary adventure? Each piece of sushi you'll enjoy at the sushi bar. Every piece of fish has a delectable flavor profile with so much depth and flavor. The fish was incredibly fresh, and they perfectly paired each piece with unique flavors such as corn and sourdough, pineapple with brown sugar, truffle oil and Japanese chimmichuri to truly walk you through a culinary journey with each bite. The three chefs all paid immense attention to every detail that went into preparing each bite. My favorites were the Hamachi, Toro, Akamutsu, and Marrow. The marrow melted like butter and I truly didn't know I was missing this in my life until now. The only negative about this experience is that it's likely ruined most other sushi experiences for me... oh well, I'll take the trade off! Absolutely incredible and will be back!
Be the first to ReplyTl;Dr food good, but service disappointing.
The sushi and the showmanship of the chefs were certainly something to remember but the experience was not worth the price nor the 20% included gratuity, and that's the reason for the 3 stars. But I do have some grievances I would like to vent.I specifically asked the hostess/bartender if I can get a non alcoholic beverage and despite getting this request right before she made the drinks, she somehow forgot. We get in through the kitchen into the cozy omakase section. Again, I asked for hot tea and yet, a mocktail arrived. I also noticed my cucumber salad they offer as a palate cleanser was missing mushrooms (despite never stating I had any allergies, also my partner's salad had mushrooms.) The seating has the guests' name on it so I don't know how these minor errors would even occur with the guests' name tags on seatings, and there only being 11 guests total. Perhaps my idea of an omakase is old fashioned, but sharing this experience with a woman on her phone for 40 min, talks about music festivals and drugs from the other patrons to the chefs, along with several other ladies talking non stop, it was tarnished to say the least. Maybe I just need to understand the price is high because of the food but not professionalism.

Lovely modern omakase filled with wide array of white to red fish and meat items. Be aware it is a very modern interpretation thus expect new American fusion toppings ranging from quinoa, corn, butter, bone marrow, matcha powder, fruits etc. nonetheless, the flavors are still spectacular and wonderful . My favorite traditional piece was the escolar that was beautifully torched and topped with fresh grated wasabi and green onions. My favorite modern piece was the unagi sprinkled with matcha powder, torched, and dripped with bone marrow fat. I'm deducting 1 star because the welcoming experience in the waiting area lounge place was very awkward. It felt rushed. The bartender greeted us and asked for our water preferences but she looked so frantic as evidenced by her talking to a coworker talking about how behind they are in their seatings. The party next to us had asked for a martini but she'd responded snappy "give me a sec will you". And proceeded to ignore them for 10 minutes before asking if they needed anything again which took them by surprise because they had already requested their drink choice. They stated a martini again and she once again responded "might take a bit". The major other thing that needs to change is the sushi bar drink pairing guy. I forget his name but an Asian guy with a mustache and beard. Dressed in a suit, but appeared drunk to us. He was so behind on our whisky and sake pairings by 3 bites (it switches about every 4 bites). The head chef even took note and had to talk to him on the side to hurry up. The pairing experience was greatly ruined by how tardy he was at pouring everything. At one pour, he even forgot me and I had to ask him to come over to also give me the pour. Lastly, his descriptions of sake and whisky were so superfluous. Said so many buzzwords without actually saying anything. Didn't get the impression he really knew what he was saying. He kept having to refer to the bottle descriptions as he was describing the pairings. Would def recommend the team to fix the drink pairing pacing and presentation. Overall, would def come again for the food, would forgo the drink pairings. Spent around $600 for 2 omakases and 2 drink pairings.

Like the rest of the Scratch/Pasta Bar experiences Sushi-Bar is a fun time. The Chefs are serious about their craft but also fun to talk to while they create their little sushi masterpieces for the omakase. It's going to be a spendy night but well worth it as it's not a sushi experience you will get anywhere else. Book early to get in.
