Quick tip: there are like 3 separate areas - front is like a casual pub, middle is a open casual dining and then an upper area, for large parties. We made a reservation for the middle dining area (terrace?) - big open space with full bar view, trendy vibe. However - we were seated next to a table with like 3 screaming kids... not so fun. lol Service was great, attentive and not overwhelming. Didn't rush us and gave us space to enjoy our convo. We were partially shouting bc we had competing loud screams in the background. A party of 6, got wine, lots of food to try, we enjoyed ourselves, first night in Lisbon! Most memorable:- Deconstructed nata- Grilled/broiled sea bass- lobster risotto - octopus tartarHappy feasting!#yelplife#lisboa

An absolute MUST! For the food, the atmosphere, & experience. Bairro do Avillez-Pateo was where I treated myself to my first traditional Portuguese dish, Acorda de camarao. I loved watching the chefs dance in the kitchen while I sipped on my wine. My serve was so courteous to serve my dish the traditional way. I enjoyed every aspect of this exquisite venue. (I went back for the Mini Bar the following weekend)See tesstjohn.com for my night with Bairro do Avillez

Be the first to ReplyArguably Portugal's most noteworthy Chef, Michelin
Arguably Portugal's most noteworthy Chef, Michelin two-starred Belcanto the crown jewel of Lisbon's fine dining scene, Bairro do Avillez is a 4-in-1 concept focused on more traditional fare from José Avillez.Translated as Avillez' neighborhood, a sloping street in Chiado home to the former convent now containing Páteo, Tavern, Bar and Pizzeria, it was after checking in outside that a seat beneath high ceilings was occupied in a room near full capacity.Loaded with local art, ceramics and murals surrounding bars and open kitchens, it was with Water poured and Bread served that a lengthy menu was perused, everything from fresh Shellfish to Ferran Adrià's Olives surrounding Chef Avillez's interpretation of Portuguese tradition.Offering some of Portugal's premier Charcuterie, a Foie Gras Terrine with Figs and Brioche simple yet decadent, Empanadas here come as small Pies featuring Partridge, Bacon and Onions inside a delicate golden Crust.Careful not to overindulge on Cornbread, a more difficult task than it seems, Stuffed Spider Crab comes in the style of José's Café Lisboa in a creamy portion large enough to share while Bras-style Cod sees classic technique and modernism merge to create something hearty and comforting.Surely a space best suited for groups, a quote from the Chef stating "Nothing makes us happier than being in good company, sharing the dishes we enjoy the most," Desserts are thankfully less sizable, though deciding between Bairro's Chocolate Cake and a Pastel de Nata Mille-Feuille is a difficult enough task that ordering one of each is advisable.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food.
Very authentic Portuguese dishes. Try the veal and definitely get the skillet with octopus and potatoes.
Be the first to ReplyBairro do Avillez is a trendy, casual, chef-driven tapas
Bairro do Avillez is a trendy, casual, chef-driven tapas bar, seafood restaurant, and pizzeria all in one! The tabernas (tapas) menu seemed the most appealing to me, so to start, we had the XL Exploding Olives, a product of molecular gastronomy. These were two orbs made to resemble two large green olives, and the skin of the "olives" exploded on the tongue, releasing a burst of flavorful liquid. The octopus with fried garlic and sweet potato was an iron skillet of thinly sliced octopus served in a liquidy kimchi sauce, but my favorite dish was the Taberna's Beefsteak Sandwich, which came with a super juicy, tender cut of steak in between two rounds of chewy Bolo do Caco bread and paired with a spread of a creamy, slightly spicy mustard butter. The delicious sandwich was served with thinly-cut fries, which were topped with a tomato-based "Taberna's sauce," along with dollops of mayonnaise and bacon bits, which added an unctuous, umami flavor. On top of the delicious food, the service here was so friendly and enthusiastic about the menu--our server gave us his recommendations and explained in particular detail how to enjoy the exploding olives!
Be the first to ReplyI was not inspired by anything on the menu.
The atmosphere was sublime. As for our order, we ordered a bottle of JA Jose Avillez signature white wine. Chef Avillez charges €16.50 for his signature, I know for a fact that the wine is over priced, okay, it's not bad, but I've had much better for €3.00. Okay, so the wine I get is less than €3.00, it's not served in a restaurant, so I guess I'll let the €16.50 purchase for his name on the bottle slide. Actually that is the theme of my entire review. I've had better for less money. On the order, bread service, tasty, but it's €5.00 or €2.50 per person. We had a margherita pizza, very bland, very thin, but not cooked so much that it turned into a cracker which also surprisingly included 3 fresh basil leaves. I order a bowl of Pho... now although the bowl was small and it wasn't as much as I'm used to getting when ordering Pho, it was really tasty. I'm sure however, that as tasty it was, it wasn't worth €10.50. We ordered ceviche, and it was at most 75grams of fish for €11.50, and it was served with sweet potato. The sweet potato took up most of the area of the plate, so I'm at odds with the dish being called ceviche. It should have been called a small sweet potato with ceviche garnish. I'm not sure how sweet potato fits the realm of ceviche, but I suspect it has everything to do with the arrogance of the Chef Avillez menu. To end dinner we ordered 2 pregos. These were served on Azores style bread which mimics a soft English muffin. Although the meat was tasty, but a bit under cooked to our order, Azores style bread doesn't stand up well enough for the sandwich. Azores style bread is best served toasted with warm butter and fig jam, not as the base for Prego do Lombo. A hearty ciabatta would have been a better choice. It was served with a small bowl of fries which had several toppings. I'm not sure what was what on the toppings. The fries were cooked perfectly. Again, Chef Avillez must be very proud of these sandwiches at €12.00 each. The meat was smaller than the size of a playing card. So, final thoughts. Bairro Avillez is a tasting restaurant, where you go when you want to say you ate at a restaurant associated with a Michelin Chef. You don't go there if you are hungry and need a meal. Again, there was nothing wrong with the food, the presentation, or the atmosphere, it wasn't about the food, it was about paying for arrogance. The staff was overly attentive. I despise wait staff that insist on pouring my bottle of wine or water into my glass when said bottles are resting on the table within easy reach. Just serve the food, and be available by sight on occasion. Okay, so the kicker is that we had contemplated on having dessert, but decided to skip dessert and go around the corner for ice cream at Chiado Terrasse but despite waiting outside the door to the place for 5 minutes no one appeared to seat us, so we left.

Dinner reservations is a must at Bairro do Avillez, one of Chef Jose Avillez's many restaurants. There are three restaurants located in Bairro do Avillez - Taberna for tapas, Páteo for seafood, and Beco for dinner-and-a-show in experience. My friend and I love seafood and we were very lucky to snag last minute reservations to dine at Páteo. We literally got our reservations a few days prior. When we arrived for our reservation, we waited about 15 minutes, then we were walked through Taberna and waited in a cocktail area for drinks. Although we saw a lot of empty tables in Páteo (our reservations were before the dinner rush), we still had to wait another 20 minutes to be seated. We received fresh pieces of bread, accompanied by olives and butter as an appetizer. For starters, we chose razor clams and prawns with garlic and chili. I couldn't get enough of the prawn's garlic and chili sauce with the bread. It was such a great mix! For my main dish, I chose the grilled sea bass, which was beautifully cooked. We had the Pastel De Nata Mille-Feuille for dessert, and it was light and delicious.Food was good but extremely overpriced and portions were quite small for the price. The ambiance was nice but service was quite slow. Mediocre experience. For the price and hype, we expected more. Still a buzzing atmosphere and overall impressive achievement.
Be the first to ReplyThis was by far our favorite restaurant in Lisbon.
The food is great and so are the drinks, the only think that tops it off is it's great ambiance.
Be the first to ReplyGood food.
Tiny portion but super overpriced .Expect to pay at least 30 euros per person and still walk out the door feeling hungry waiter as kinda rude which is unusual for a country where everyone is super friendly and polite. .
