Cold food, served a-la-carte straight from the buffet!!
One of my first objectives when I move to a new town or city is to find a good Indian restaurant, which I normally patronize 2/3 time per week and consume full 3 course meal and 3 or 4 large beers. I read some good reviews about the Tandoori Hut, on 5th Ave, so thought I would try it out. I was looking forward to a good dining experience, which normally includes Indian beers, appetizers, a hearty spicy dinner and watching Bollywood music videos on their TV. I positioned myself so I could see the TV and proceeded to order. The beer came and although cold, was flat. It was a bottle of Taj Mahal, which had probably been opened earlier on the evening and not consumed, returned to the fridge waiting for muggings here to come in. I let the flat beer slide as the first beer doesn't usually last more than a few minutes. I ordered an appetizer, Lamb Samosas and Chicken Tikka Masala with rice, for the main dish. I sat back to relax and enjoy the music videos and my flat beer. Within minutes my dinner had arrived, a bowl of soupy masala, with cubed 'fake' or processed chicken, which had obviously been taken from the giant batch used for the never ending buffet, instead of carefully prepared al-la-carte as requested. When the server brought the main dish I stopped him and inquired as to the whereabouts of the appetizers. He informed me that the appetizers take longer to cook than the main dish and that he would bring them out in a "Few minutes" WHAT!!!!!!. I think he meant longer to cook that it does to spoon out day old masala from a bath sized tub!! I informed him that the appetizer is supposed to come before the main course and I told him to cancel the samosas, he obviously doesn't understand English, because while I was waiting for my rice to arrive, he arrived with the samosas. I sent him and them away as the rice arrived, honestly, I have never seen a smaller plate of rice served as dinner. To put it into perspective, the masala soup was about the size of a regular sized cereal bowl, which had been filled to the brim with the mass produced sauce and the rice arrived on a small sized side plate (not a bowl, a flat side plate) with what I estimated to be 1/2 cup of plain white rice. I questioned the server and she said that's what comes with a dinner. By this time I was becoming weary of arguing. I just said ok, just leave it and proceeded to serve up my Sunday evening treat. IT WAS COLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG!!! I'm normally very subdued, especially in public, but I couldn't help myself, I called the woman from behind the counter and informed her that the food was cold and went on a mini tirade about everything else. With that I got up and walked out. I've been frequenting restaurants for 40 years, all over Europe and America and have NEVER walked out dues to poor service or food. From my one visit I can say that the place is more like a fast food joint, intent on packing the gullets of patrons with as much food and as quickly as possible. The masala is the only dish I can specifically comment on and it was dreadful, no real taste and dreadful processed chicken, pre-cut into exact squares for 'convenience'. 1st and last visit. You have been warned.
Be the first to ReplyA good place for a quick lunch/dinner
Although I gave this an average rating, its not because it has bad food, but its not great either. I've eaten her many times and its ok food for the price. Its well worth your time if you want a quick lunch/dinner. I'd recommend the buffet. The staff are always friendly.
Be the first to ReplyMediocre at best
There are too many great places in this town for cheap grub to waste time and money here. Most buffet items during our visit were actually cold, not to mention flavorless. The cold salads were well past their sell-by date. Naan was OK, but not enough to offset the rest of a regrettable meal.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious Indian food and the best mint chutney in San Diego
We had take-out (delivered via a service). We had Chicken Curry, Lamb Karahi, Mushroom Masala, Papadums, and plain Roti. We asked for extra mint chutney. Each dish was delicious. The mushroom masala was creamy, while the chicken curry and lamb karahi had complex flavors. The level of hotness was as requested. I need to call out the mint chutney, which was fresh and the best tasting I've had in years. (A long time ago, Bombay in Hillcrest had mint chutney that was as good, but the past few years there's has been the standard stuff you get everywhere.) The Tandoori Hut's mint chutney has a texture and flavor that you can't get out of a jar. I could eat it right out the tub!
Be the first to ReplyGreat indian food in unpretentious place
We visited Tandoori Hut a regular wednesday night and given the somewhat scruffy exterior of the place, we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. My partner had the buffรฉ which he enjoyed greatly. I had the mutter paneer w garlic naan from regular menue and it was really tasty. Very nice and attentive staff as well. In summary: an unpretentious place with great Indian food for reasonable prices.
Be the first to ReplyGood lunch buffet
Nice place and a decent variety of food on the lunch buffet for $9.99. As noted by others--indifferent (no) service. You get your own food, and your own drink, and no one ever even came to my table except to deliver the naan. They DO bring freshly made garlic naan to your table instead of having it on the buffet. For my visit, good chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, tandoori chicken, mushroom masala and several other decent choices. Not quite the spiciness I expect from Indian food, but overall a place I would visit again.
Be the first to ReplyWrong Address
This place is actually not in La Jolla, it is in Hillcrest at 5th Avn. The server didn't look happy to serve us (group of 6), could be more friendly, did not explain the dishes when we asked and was always busy when we called. The food good be better. The chicken samosa smelled old. The rice was not good basmati rice and the chicken curry had just few taste o curry. I would recommend to go to other indian restaurants in Mira Mesa area.
Be the first to ReplyVery very poor

Be the first to ReplyBest Samosas in the USA and beautifully spiced curries
I have travelled in India many times and now I have finally found a restaurant in the USA that can match the food over there !!! The vegetarian samosas were absolutely perfect ! The pastry was light and lightly fried, with a soft and deliciously spiced vegetable mix inside. The curries were beautifully spiced, each one maintaining their individual flavor. We asked for medium spiciness level and the "heat" was perfect- just like in India-being just on the verge of being too hot but not too hot, a pleasant warmth. The interior dรฉcor is plain, looks more like a fast food place, but don't let that deter you. Their portions are large. The price is right, it cost us $20 for a meal for two. Eat in or takeout. They have a buffet. (Note: I did not eat at the buffet so I cannot comment on the buffet.)
Be the first to Replyoverpriced, mediocre food, indifferent service
We opted for the dinner buffet, which is grossly overpriced at $12/person. Chicken korma is usually one of my favorites, but theirs is the worst I've ever had--insipid sauce, chicken dry and hard. Same for the tandoori chicken. The only good dish was chicken jalfrezi, which was delicious. The service was indifferent: bored, inattentive young Indians in the customer area, Latinos in the kitchen. The place didn't seem totally clean, either, especially the buffet area. Walk past this place by and go to the much, much better India Palace, a block away on the north side of University.
