A wonderful space and luxurious vegetarian cuisine
I made a reservation and visited this restaurant during my trip to Kyoto. This is a shojin ryori restaurant located in the Tenryu-ji Temple Garden in Arashiyama, and is directly managed by the Tenryu-ji Temple's shojin ryori department. It has a very good reputation and the food is delicious, so I definitely wanted to visit. I later found out that it was listed as a Bib Gourmand in the 2023 Kyoto-Osaka Michelin Guide. When I think of shojin ryori at a temple, I imagine eating healthy food in a slightly formal room, but that's not the case at all. A beautiful Japanese-style building, a very open and spacious space, and healthy dishes that are luxurious and vibrant. The food and space are very satisfying. There are also many foreign tourists. There were foreigners before us, and all of them had smiles on their faces when they saw and ate the food. The dishes include a 9,000 yen course with one soup and seven dishes, a 6,500 yen course with one soup and six dishes, and a 3,800 yen course with one soup and five dishes. I had the 3,800 yen course. The volume was more than enough to satisfy me. I was able to order alcohol, so I enjoyed a beer. There is a separate admission fee to enter the Tenryu-ji Garden, but this is a shop that I would highly recommend.

Zen vegetarian cuisine at Shigetsu, Shojin ryori.Japanese food culture experience! Made from vegetable, soybeans and seaweed. Booking Need! The restaurant surrounded by the natural beauty of Tenryu-ji World Heritage Garden. 篩月で精進料理! 天龍寺直営のお店です。 野菜のみとは思えない満足感! ごま豆腐や煮物など丁寧に作られたお食事に感動しました。 平日でも予約お勧めします。
Be the first to ReplyFantastic gastronomic experience
It was a fantastic gastronomic experience to taste the vegetarian dishes of Tenryuji Temple's centuries-old Zen Buddhist cuisine. The chosen course was Hana, prepared with local seasonal products and served on traditional red lacquered wooden trays. Excellent value for money, I recommend booking reasonably in advance.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the things you should experience while in Jap
This was my second Zen Buddhist veggie meal experience (The first one during a temple stay in Koyasan). The set up is large scale, not intimate. Exquisite food, immaculate service. The 3300 set lunch incl tea was just perfect for us. Walnuts, sesame tofu and pumpkin soup among my favourites.

We pre-booked the Hana course which included a private room. After entering without shoes we were seated on the floor at our individual tables and the servers brought the courses. Although each of the 15 or so individual dishes was quite small, there was so much food I was the most full I’ve been in a long time. We were not told what all of the dishes were so I would only recommend this to open-minded eaters. Fussy eaters probably won’t enjoy the mystery! Although it may seem expensive compared to other meals in Japan (around £90 total for the two of us), it was such a special experience which we’ll remember forever.
Be the first to ReplyMost memorable dining experience in Kyoto
The most memorable dining experience of our time in Japan. Bask in the amazing views of the mountains around Arashimaya and take in the beauty of the gardens of Tenryu-ji temple while enjoying a healthy, well-balanced meal. We had originally reserved for 3 couples but 1 couple could not make it, and the staff was understanding of the last minute change. We enjoyed the Hana (Flower) course and had the privacy of a personal dining room. Each piece of the meal was thoughtfully crafted and we felt the love that went into the meal. The ingredients tasted fresh as if just plucked from a garden for the meal. The soups were heartwarming and all the flavors worked in perfect harmony. Toward the end of our meal, our server asked us when we would like to receive the matcha so that we can enjoy it fresh and warm. The matcha was oh-so delicious, warm and frothy! We also were not rushed to finish our meal, so we took some time to meditate and reflect on our experience with the stunning views from the private dining room. I highly recommend this vegan-friendly temple meal if you are planning to visit Kyoto! Definitely take some time to explore the gardens after the meal as well, the temple is gorgeous.
Be the first to ReplyA disappointing experience
We were really excited to have this special meal when we visited Arashiyama but were disappointed. The food was good, although not fabulous, but the atmosphere of the restaurant was really lacking. We hoped to be looking out on the temple gardens, enjoying Zen serenity, but were seated in a line, facing a line of other diners. The staff seemed to be working hard to get us in and out as quickly as possible. It all felt a little institutional.

First time going for veg meal in Japan. Very nice experience, staff tried to explain the dishes to us but limited English. Anyhow we had everything, not 100% knowing what they are but still splendid. Tranquil setting

I was here years ago and when Japan finally reopened for tourism, I knew we would be coming back to Shigetsu. Each time, this has been my favorite meal not just in Kyoto by during my whole Japan trip. It's a little pricey if you add more dishes, but it's definitely an experience I have no trouble spending money on. You can add drinks to your meal but it comes with tea. We had our own little tatami room which looked out on the garden. Seats are available if you have mobility issues and can't sit on the tatami. I reserved our meal months in advance because I'm a paranoid planner. But you should make a reservation. The day we were there in late February, they sold out. I'm vegan and loved everything. The soy milk hot pot that cooked while we started was so cute and very tasty. I'm always a junky for goma dofu and the goma dofu at Shigetsu is so creamy, it cannot be beat. The tempura included fiddlehead ferns. Dessert was white bean mochi and matcha. I will come here every time I am Japan if I can. It's always an absolute joy to dine here.

Stumbled upon this when entering the paid garden area of Tenryuji. Didn’t think much of it as these tend to be tourist traps with poor value and/or quality. It’s lunch time and there was nothing near so I looked up the reviews and relented after seeing so many good reviews. Glad to say this was neither poor value nor poor quality. 3300jpy for a delicious and filling vegan meal, amazing!

Upon arrival, I'm transported to a Japanese Zen Garden with a pond filled with Koi Carps. We were shown to a private room, with tatami mats and fortunately with low chairs for us non-Japanese. After mucking about re-creating Ninja movie scenes and Family wrestling games, we welcomed the lovely Kaiseki experience. Amazing Large Mushrooms soaked in wine.

it was a nice traditional vegan food I had here. the atmosphere is great and I really hope for a tranquility and quiet meals but too bad, there was a couple who keep on talking with each others and its a bit annoying. Overall, everything is great. the food is delicious, the place is quiet and clean, atmosphere... everything is nice!

Wonderful service sitting on the floor, fantastic spread. Look at pictures! They tend to sits groups in a line, so expect to talk to strangers.
Be the first to Replydelicious
The food was wonderful and light and refreshing. We had a reservation but that was not necessary at all since not many people were there. The place is located inside the temple. Do not follow google maps which will direct you to the back door and outside of the temple.
Be the first to ReplyOk but nothing special
A bit hyped up with more style than substance. Food was nice to look at but taste and texture a bit bland.

Hands down some of the best vegetarian food I have ever had. This will be one of those meals that always stays with me. If you are in the area, you must go!
Be the first to ReplyA Must Visit for Vegetarians seeking Shijin- ryori food
We ate by far the best vegetarian food we have had in Japan and perhaps one of the best in our lifetimes. There are many ryokans in Kyoto that serve Buddhist vegetarian meals (Shijin- ryori 精進料理.). This is by far the best! Food of Zen Buddhist monks effortlessly balancing simplicity, harmony, color and flavor.
