The Aviary is truly a unique experience - their menu items
The Aviary is truly a unique experience - their menu items and drinks are very innovative. I tried the Ginger drink and it came in a cool glass vase. It tasted amazing, and the quantity was abundant. The service was really great, felt like the waiter was attentive and tried to make my birthday special. I would say the ambiance would be nice but the place feels so packed.

It's been awhile and I look forward to going back! It's so creative and fun to see what drinks will appear. They could add more gluten free options, but maybe they have more now. Really great experience! Recommend highly!

A truly unique and impressive cocktail bar! The ambiance is great and it is open late. We had a friend get us reservations so can't speak to that part but the cocktails are really cool here and they will get you tipsy!! They mark on the menu which cocktails come with more theatrics which is appreciated. I highly recommend you go with one with more of a presentation if you are like me. I really enjoyed mine which I believe was a sake drink.

Cocktails: 4 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 4 Cost to worth it rating: 3 (3 cocktails $100 including tax/tip) Opentableable: no, but via Tock Return worthiness: maybe Highlights: - Some unique drinks: the rum popping boba, slingshot crack the ice orb whiskey, and signature circular infuser were the highlight presentations. - Atmosphere: felt like a lobby bar which has it's pluses for not being too dark or intimidating. - Tasting menu options: liked having 3 to try and they were full drinks and also pre-paying including tip saves you the hassle when you're there. Midlights: - Drinks were fine and appreciated the high quality ingredients, however nothing stood out on pure taste as being exceptional. - Waitress clearly had a script she repeated verbatim to each table which was a bit more robotic than welcoming to a fun higher end experience. - Menu was a bit confusing with the main order being the weight of the drink and birds on the left side for more impressive presentation. Lowlights: - Because so many high end specialty cocktail places have surfaced, it's not as much of a WOW factor as it likely was when they opened years ago. Had an entertaining stop here post-dinner at Next.

This isn't just a meal people! THIS is an EXPERIENCE!!! It's like an art show (or modeling show) with food and cocktails as the participants. SO awesome! Thoroughly enjoyed our time here. Love that it's prepaid, so one can just focus on enjoying the cocktails, the food, the exceptional service and the fantastic atmosphere. Every single thing I ate and drank was FABULOUS. Words cannot describe. SO glad my friend suggested going here.
Be the first to ReplyWe had the 5 cocktail tasting menu paired with small bites.
The food, as one would expect from the Alinea Group, was spectacular and special - perfect scallop, caviar, blue crab, etc. mostly all paired wisely with the cocktails. The cocktails were visually stunning, and most were superb. The opening ginger tequila infusion delighted, and a lychee mix followed (too quickly) that was a real sparkler. The visual high point - copper bird glasses on a beautiful nest with food served in porcelain eggshells - was a taste letdown. Cloyingly sweet drink we didn't finish, which at this price point is unfortunate. The inevitable smoke cocktail followed, well-paired with pork belly, and then a magnificent Mexican hot chocolate spiked with rum. Pacing, as with my meal at Next last year, was off - far too rushed. It's five cocktails, and I do not expect to be pushed to swill my very expensive drinks and gobble my food to accommodate the kitchen. I asked the waiter to slow the roll and he accommodated, unlike the meal at Next last year where we were the last seating but courses were piled on top of each other. Ambiance is visually relaxing and intimate, with scoopy, elegant banquettes. However, the music was TOO LOUD and almost all of the playlist was rap/Buddha bar music. I came to talk to my companion, not talk OVER a spoken word soundtrack. Our waiter was superb. Overall, at this price point, I expect a more thoughtful pace centered on MY experience, not the whim of the kitchen, and a more appropriate soundscape. The third, super-sugary cocktail was too sweet for almost any palate.
Be the first to ReplyTL;DR: Unique cocktails with flavor and cool presentations.
Be prepared to spend some money This place is great if you want to sip on a nice cocktail. All the servers are very knowledgeable and kind. If you don't care about the presentation or flavor, I would say this might not be your cup of tea. They had great presentations and it was fun to see what other people got too! Cocktails: *Chapulin Colorado: Interesting flavor with Bell Peppers and can smell how fresh they are Two to Tango: Great cocktail that is cold and would be perfect for a resort drink Affogato: High end espresso martini like taste My Neighbor To-Taro: Cool presentation and felt like the drink was very funky since it was warm, but fun to try
Be the first to ReplyThe Aviary was on my bucket list so we went for my birthday.
Hot tip: EAT BEFORE arrival. The cocktails are beautifully & creatively presented, visually stimulating, & extremely high in alcohol content! If you pair with courses, they take extreme care to mind allergies & diet restrictions. The food pairing is delicately presented & very small in portion size. Eating something to absorb the amount of alcohol will save you from a very rough day after. ;)
Be the first to ReplySuburban sugar factory.
I really wish I could have given a better rating. We did the 5 course menu with drinks and bites. Pros: the food was excellent. Interesting flavors, well plated, and perfectly cooked. The drink presentation was beautiful. The ambiance was interesting though not beautiful. Cons: it took 25 minutes for us to get a drink or bite after we sat down with a reservation. The drink pairings were so heavy on simple syrup and juice that you couldn't taste anything else. As a business that built its reputation on cocktails, it was so sad to see what they are serving now. Even the "spirit forward" drinks were just sugar and booze. In their defense, they did put effort into addressing our comments on the sweet drinks by offering a couple of replacement drinks. The first was also super sweet, the second was the best drink we had there (some kind of frozen ball where you broke it open to have the drink spill out). Our server tried to address our comments but also set down the last drink and never came back (we pre-paid). No manager ever came over despite our table clearly not enjoying the drinks (we left most of them half drunk on our table by the end). Sadly, I think this has become a tourist trap and not a real restaurant/bar up to the standards of the Alinea Group of the past. It gave us an interesting story to tell at a dinner party. But we won't be back.

Excellent drinks that are powerful, provided you are not a vodka lover. Good for dates, business, or casual hangout.

While the cocktails at this venue were creative and delicious, I'm not so sure if they are worth the high price tag given that many restaurants are now catching up on the level of crafty cocktails. That being said, the one-bit truffle explosion was simply outstanding. It was a flavor explosion.Overall, I would recommend this cocktail bar to anyone looking for exceptional appetizers and drinks. The ambiance, service, and quality of the food and drinks were outstanding. However, it's important to note that the bill may be on the higher side.

When this was located in NYC, it was my favorite bar on the planet. I've been to a lot of places, but this was special. Since moving to Chicago, the magic is gone. The location is sub par and the drink list wasn't as impressive. I got charged $50 for these rainbow chop sticks that came with a drink.... Should I have kept them?! So confused. We were in such a hurry to rush off to our dinner reservation at Obelix (which you must try) that I couldn't stick around and argue about the charge. Find another spot to impress your friends in town, because this isn't it.

I've never felt compelled to write a Yelp review until now! The cocktails and food are great. Very tasty and unique. However the service is atrocious for the price. We booked the three cocktail progression and then ordered additional food. Very pricey. But every cocktail was served to us before we were even halfway done with the current one! We were expected to drink 3 cocktails in less than 45 minutes! The server also never checked on us, never refilled waters (which was desperately needed after 3 cocktails in 45 minutes) and never explained anything. At one point I was given chopsticks, but never explained what for? (Apparently a seaweed salad under one drink?) Also the ambiance isn't great - it's pretty bright inside and all two top tables are very close together. Ugh it was really not worth the money! Maybe it was a Sunday night problem, but wow it was terrible.

My husband and I went to The Aviary to celebrate our anniversary. I had been there one other time with my girlfriends. When I went the first time, we had a good time together. We really enjoyed the drinks, but our waiter was less than friendly and barely checked in on how we were doing. I decided to give it another try because I wanted my husband to experience the ambiance and the drinks. However, we still experienced very poor service. Our waitress was even less friendly than the waiter I had the first time. She literally never smiled. We had questions about the drinks because it is hard to tell what each drink really is and she had very little patience in answering our questions. If you do go, be prepared for a 20% service charge on your bill that is NOT considered gratuity. So you are paying them a lot of money for their "service" which is honestly the weakest part of the entire experience. The drinks are nice, but for the price and poor service, I would give it 2.5 stars.

I recently visited this cocktail bar and I must say, it was an excellent experience. The ambiance was upscale and sophisticated, and the service was exceptional. But the drinks and appetizers were the real stars of the show. The cocktails were expertly crafted with style and presentation, and they tasted as good as they looked. The ingredients were high-quality and perfectly balanced, resulting in delicious and satisfying drinks. The drinks were presented like art. Best focaccia bread I've ever had.The one-bit truffle explosion was simply outstanding - it was a flavor explosion in my mouth. The truffle flavor was perfectly balanced with the cheese filling, resulting in a truly indulgent and satisfying bite.Overall, I highly recommend this cocktail bar to anyone looking for delicious drinks and exceptional appetizers. The ambiance, service, and quality of the food and drinks were outstanding. Whether you're looking for a place to impress a date or just to enjoy a night out with friends, this cocktail bar is definitely worth a visit.

Came here with my wife at the recommendation of almost everyone when we said we were going to Chicago. Made a reservation a few weeks out, and still ended up with a pretty late start time. The staff was fairly hospitable. The drinks here are unique, and very pricy, which we knew coming into it. I thought the cocktail list was the most distinctive I have seen, with creations I have not seen anywhere else. Our cocktails were good, but it didn't quite live up to the hype that I had heard. If in Chicago again, I'd be open to trying here again, but it wouldn't be a top priority.
Be the first to ReplyOur waiter spilled an entire drink on my husband.
I don't mean poured a little, I mean the entire drink and dropped the glass on him. They offered to dry clean at our own expense, then send them the bill. They also "made up" for the mistake by giving us popcorn and chips to-go, hmm. After such an egregious mistake one might think they would aim for flawless service after, however, that was not the case for us sadly. For example, on several occasions our waiter would set up for the next course only to come back and remove everything to then return yet again and put the correct utensils out which interrupted our conversation far more than necessary. For a place such as this and what you prepay for the experience including the service, that should come with higher levels of execution than a typical bar. We were so excited to finally try The Aviary after having great experiences at other Alinea group establishments, but this was not it at all.
Be the first to ReplyThe Aviary's Kitchen Table Experience is officially cheap
The Aviary's Kitchen Table Experience is officially cheap and skimpy now, so don't bother. Just get the regular menu and go a la carte.Back in 2020, they served excellent dishes (from NEXT) and the cocktails were the premium drinks you see in their cocktail books; they required a lot of work and the result was a beautiful and delicious drink. Cut to 2023 and you get the cheap bites from Aviary's appetizer menu alongside very simple cocktails that would be considered easy to make at home. Worse, they were plain and just tasted like a bunch of blended vodkas, whiskeys, whatever.Food-wise, you get promised like 7 courses, but each appetizer counts individually, so now popcorn, focaccia bread and cornbread balls pass as 3 courses?! Yikes, lol...Overall, a very disappointing return to the Kitchen Table and we are getting fazed by the entire Alinea Group line-up and their lack of observation/care. Roister is needlessly loud, NEXT is severely overpriced (by 30%) and Alinea is no longer deserving of 3 Michelin stars... 2 for sure, but the bar is too low for modern-Alinea's 3.

I came here in 2012, and the place was tranquil with classy, well-behaved clientele. The cocktails were well-balanced, visually appealing, and so refreshing. It was a real pleasure and quite a memorable experience.I went this past weekend, and the clientele were loud, drunk business school-type d bags. The cocktails were overly sweet, and several tasted like cough syrup. I get approached by a guest from another table, asking if I want to go with him to a strip club. We ask to be seated elsewhere or if the host can ask the customers to be quiet, and they do neither.Let's just say the Aviary has been infiltrated by the MBA people who chose short term revenue over the long term quality of the brand.

We had a gift certificate burning a hole in our pocket for this place dating back to 2019. All I can say is we were not let down. The cocktails they serve here are art worthy. We had an app that was just ok but the cocktails are what you come for here anyways. They are a bit pricey but honestly it's worth it. A must try!!!!!
Be the first to ReplyI have long heard of The Aviary and its absolute outwardly
I have long heard of The Aviary and its absolute outwardly thinking cocktail program. From their from-scratch cocktails to their creative drinking vessels to even the recipes from their famous cocktail book, there was absolutely no way I was visiting Chicago for the first time without going to The Aviary. We made reservations online weeks in advanced and had to pay the total beforehand. We got two of the 3-course cocktail progressions which totaled to $130. We had some questions regarding dietary restrictions so I sent them an email and they replied the next day saying they would be able to accommodate them. For the cocktail progression, you choose a drink from each section to mix-and-match different flavor profiles you want. When we arrived for our reservations we almost didn't see it because there was only a very small sign for it. However when we stepped through the door it's like we were entering a whole new world. We were seated at a small countertop table instead of in the lounge area which meant we got to see the action behind the scenes up front. There was basically an assembly line of workers building the drinks. You can tell that there was so much preparation that went into making the drinks like pouring things on scales to be precise and call-and-response phrases. It was a well-oiled machine with everyone in sync. I really could've watched them all day because it was so mesmerizing. For my cocktail progression I started with the great pearing which was delicious and pear-y as expected. The popsicle that came with it was yuzu and pine nut and as it melted the whole drink changed flavor profiles. At first it was more pear and whiskey flavored but then it became more tart and sweet. Then I continued on to the don't you sassafras me which contained root beer and vanilla. It was a sweeter drink and there was basically popping boba at the bottom. Finally I ended with the in the rocks which was a bittersweet and boozy cocktail. The drink was in the sphere itself and they had a mechanism to crack the ice sphere open so the drink could escape. It was more than just a bar that served drinks; it was art, science, an experience, a show. I've been to many unique and different bars and this is one of the most unique bars I've ever been to.

I've been wanting to go to Aviary since I heard about them opening up years ago. I'm sad to say it didn't live up to my expectations. We ordered the drink and food pairing flight. Most of the drinks were cloyingly sweet. My favorite drink had a curry flavored ice cube which slowly changed the taste. The best food dishes were the crab soup and duck confit. This wasn't quite worth it for $200. If you are visiting from out of town I would not recommend prioritizing this on your itinerary.
