I wanted to update my review from a lifetime ago.
Bombay Club is among my favorite Indian restaurants in DC. The atmosphere is very inviting and classy, and they have a pianist on the weekends and perhaps other evenings. The food options are traditional if not dependable selections and the drinks are inventive as well. It is not a lively/trendy venue but rather a traditional and tasteful restaurant. I tend to prefer the chicken dishes especially but there are a variety of quality offerings.

We have eaten at the Bombay Club for 18 years, every time we come to DC; it was our "First date place" The food is wonderful. The service is great. But last week when we were there, we had a surprise. My wife, a vegetarian ordered one of their vegetarian mushroom entrees. I had a seafood dish. Our companions had two meat based meals as well. We all had wine. we had appetizers and Nan. All of our dishes were in the $28-$35.00 range. When the bill came, I noticed we were charged for a rice extra ($5.00) that we did not order. When we questioned it, the waiter explained that it was a charge for the rice to accompany the vegetarian entree. This was the $28.00 entree. None of the meat based dishes were given this charge for their rice. Never has this kind of "extra" charge happened to us for a vegetarian dish at any Indian restaurant anywhere, or there before. How does one eat a vegetarian dish with no rice? I objected to the charge, mentioning that all the rest of us had our rice as a "given" with our meal. They refused to remove the charge. We have loved this restaurant. We felt however, that the charge was simply padding the bill. We will never return to this restaurant. They lost loyal customers over a $5.00 bowl of rice upcharge. Sad. Goodbye Bombay Club.

After a dream dinner over the holidays in 2023, my husband's birthday meal today disappointed. Beware parties of two - you'll be seated in a secondary dining room where one diner faces a wall and you miss the lovely atmosphere of the main dining room. Just moving the tables so the main dining room is in view would be an improvement. We had a thali and green chili chicken and a crab roti appetizer. Food was delicious but portions of thali so small (one bite of fish, two small bites of lamb, and 2 small bites of chicken in addition to very small portions of saag, dal and raita) I ate two cheese sticks when I got home. Service is always gracious so I have no complaints there. I would prefer to pay a bit more and leave the restaurant pleasantly full. Unfortunately for my husband this was a forgettable meal.

Located near the metro station, it's no wonder this place gets so much traffic. On a busy weekend, I would make sure to make a reservation. The dress code is smart casual, so no athletic wear or torn clothing! It is quiet, simple, and romantic, perfect for a date. The aloo ragda is a sweet and savory dip that goes well with the naan. The truffle naan is just very standard naan but is very light and airy; it tastes the same as a regular naan, however, so don't be fooled by the name truffle! The lamb vindaloo is just a tiny bit spicy. I would definitely try their very spicy next time. The chicken tikka is also very good, although the meat was a little tough.

When an establishment is open since 1988, things that could be said about it have likely already been stated, repeated, written about and then cemented into the hall of fame of the restaurant business. The Bombay Club, located a block away from the White House, is a place where white tablecloths reign, where major decisions happen and where one might just find themselves very lucky to be dining. Obama, Clinton and Bush have all dined here. So have many celebrities over the years. Demi Moore, Bruce Willis and Michael Douglas just to name a few. The place is owned and ran by Ashok Bajaj, who also runs the famous Rasika and has a proven record of very successful restaurants. It is now equally an American meal to dine here as anything else could ever be. The tandoori salmon is served bursting in juices, unique flavor and a side of lemon. Lamb Rogan Josh is delicate to a level where it simply falls apart with a rich spinach curry that's going to soak up every bit of basmati and naan that comes its way. A side of lamb samosas is a pleasant add for those who may not have had enough lamb yet. To complement the perfectly executed entrees, there is a vast wine list that's priced at an extremely reasonable 2x up charge vs retail, which is starting to become less and less common these days. Service is sharp, with waiters well trained and dressed to the theme of this fine dining establishment. Bombay Club can now be referenced to as a legendary place in the city and is an absolute must to visit.
Be the first to ReplyHorrendous.
I'm baffled that the staff charged our group $375 due to a missed reservation. One of our team members accidentally called this location rather than Bombay Club in New Orleans to ensure our reservation was still confirmed. It was the staff member's error to not correct my co-worker when she asked about the New Orleans reservation (which I specifically heard her ask about earlier in the day). It is also no where on the website about this missed reservation fee. Assuming they will add the disclaimer after seeing this review. We'll be in touch.
Be the first to ReplyLOVE this place.
I know its sister restaurant gets all the spotlight but I will always choose this one for its ambience and exceedingly comfortable space. I can forget Im in Washington altogether and could have once found such a place in London.

The quality and ambience is unlike anything else. Excellent location. Some dishes are hit or miss but definitely will come back. Great location near Washington DC as well.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best dining experiences in DC hands down.
Service is impeccable. Food is top notch Indian cuisine. Live piano player is cherry on top.
Be the first to ReplyOverall good experience here.
Ordered drinks which were served quickly. The ambiance is nice with some tucked away tables that feel private. The best dish was the lamb vindaloo. Quite spicy but super delicious. The portion sizes are small for the price but I expected that. Overall, tastes pretty authentic and very flavorful food.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent in all ways.
Meal was superb and service was first class.. everyone is very friendly
Be the first to ReplyJust came back from dinner at Bombay Club.
I went there after almost 8 years. The ambiance is still great love the pianist playing soothing music. The service is great. Overall, just a great experience. This restaurant is owned by the same management that owns Rasika (one of my favorites). Here is what we ordered:- Crispy Kale Chat -- this is a signature Rasika dish. After it became famous at Rasika, many restaurants adopted it. The chat is good here but not as great as Rasika. - Bhalla Papri Chat -- this is a bit misleading. There is no bhalla (Indian dumpling) in this. It's just like Sev Puri. It's very good. - Bombay Thali -- this comes with rice and 1 Lachcha paratha. The portion is more than enough for one person. The daal makhani was delicious. - Gulab Jamun -- general dessert. Was good. Nothing fancy about it. - Pistachio Kulfi -- wasn't a huge fan of this. Didn't like the taste. Overall, great food and ambiance. Had an amazing experience with my family and my parents loved it.

Made a reservation for dinner and I was told that they do not allow children under the age of 8. The guy on the phone was rude and dismissive. The only thing on their website is that they do not allow strollers nor have high chairs. I've eaten at their other properties but this one is the worst. They are forever off my list.
Be the first to ReplyAs an Indian girl, I have to say.
.. this is probably my favorite Indian restaurant in DC. 10/10 Everything is elevated here- the service is amazing, the live pianist is a great touch, and the interiors are really nice. - the thali was fabulous, daal was so rich, sabzi was really flavorful - drinks were really creative and reminded me of home- the sticky toffee pudding is 100000/10, one of my fav DC desserts If it's good enough for bill Clinton, I guess it's good enough for me lol
Be the first to ReplyOnce upon a 4-5 stars.
Alas, came the bill, and the stars fell down.First time here. Wifey and I ventured to something new and different. Outside, we thought the place was closed or abandoned for the night. T'was after all, a weekday night, albeit Friday night. When we walked in, boy were we surprised! Ivory keys playing some good romantic jams and lighting was dim that you know this was special and people abound. We asked for some recommendations and the appetizers seems to be the ones they pushed a lot besides the main meal. Then I asked if the main meal comes with rice and the waiter replied, yes, it comes with rice. So we decided one of the two mail meal orders that he recommended, the Nalli Gosht lamb shank, and to add to that, the TND Salmon and garlic naan. The wait was worth it as we listened to some familiar American soft classics. Then the food came. The Nalli Gosht was delicious enough to make this place almost a 5 star food. The Salmon was ok. The Naan, was, well a garlic Naan. Then came time for deserts. They admittedly say they are weak in this area, and I would say so too. But that's all ok and I would accept it.But what makes the intro the way it is is that when the bill came. Remember, I asked about the rice? They charged us for rice as extra. Then not only that, the garlic naan that I ordered. We were charged for 2 orders. Wtf??? That wraps the cake for the rating. Screw me once, maybe. Screw me twice, we'll, that's where the ratings plummets!!! I was ecstatic until the fiasco. So, will I ever come back here? Probably not!
Be the first to ReplyOrdered lamb vindaloo.
Taste was ok but nothing great. Maybe 3 of 5. More sweet than spicy and no potatoes. The lamb itself was very dry.Aside from food quality , I was disappointed because I wasn't given a fork or napkins for my takeout order. I actually walked back to get one and was told they don't give forks. I kind of feel like this is basic for takeout but I was told they didn't have any and to get one from seven eleven. Even if this is something that the restaurant doesn't want to provide, why weren't they more upfront about it? It felt intentional to me. Cannot recommend this place to anyone.
Be the first to ReplyWent here for our Anniversary-Was just an OK experience.
They gave us a table in the room with the sliding glass doors and my seat overlooked the swinging kitchen doors!Appetizers were below average - shrimp was over cooked and deep fried - I expected grilled. The crab appetizer had a messy presentation and looked like someone had spooned on cooked crab masala on pieces of cold dosa - not greatFor the entrees the dal makhani was a standout. Railway lamb was good -as were the naans. Biryani was flavorful but lacked presentation - the chicken kebabs were not good. Overcooked and dryWill not go here again

Classic, casually elegant restaurant one block from Whitehouse. Great people watching. Same owners as Rasika. Get the crispy Kale. Speak with waitstaff to help you order so you can try something new, but the Chicken Tikka Masala is always an option!

Amazing food - my family has been going here every year for my brother's birthday and it's always great. The staff are fantastic and so kind. "The Moroccan guy" (as he said to call him!) was so nice and gave us champagne and extra dessert for his birthday. Highly recommended!
Be the first to ReplyService was amazing, food was amazing, vibes were amazing.
I came here for a romantic dinner with my partner and that is exactly what I got. The food was delicious and I would come back just to try more items. Unfortunately we were seated next to a drink station which was a little upsetting, since the waiters were constantly grabbing dishes, talking around us, and places a lot of open wine bottles/other dishes there.I would recommend the Thali to try a variety of items!
Be the first to ReplyWe had a reservation for a graduation party.
We had the worst experience ever in any restaurant. First and foremost the manager was extremely rude. Hope the administration realizes that he is not at all suitable for any customer service. I have never seen anyone restaurant being run by such rude manager. The AC stopped working and today was one of the hottest day in DC. My daughter found a bug on the table. We complained but they were not concerned about it as if that was the norm in this restaurant. Hope the food inspectors check the kitchen . I am concerned how the condition of the kitchen is. The room was very hot and they did not even provide a fan in absence of AC. Somehow we finished this tormenting experience and left. There was no apology by the manager. Food was below average. The palak chat was dribbling with excess oil. The palak entree was poorly made and the serving was too small even for one person. Even the mango lassi which is the easiest thing to make was not good. The beer was not chilled. Cannot believe that they have been in business with such management. Such a shame that they provide such bad experience to their patrons who come there for a special occasion like graduation!
Be the first to ReplyClassy but flexible, what a treasure.
The staff is attentive and professional. Lunch attire is flexible and the the portions are perfect for those long days. There's is a lot of love put into everything they make here. The simplicity of the menu make the complex flavors a memorable treat. Definitely would make a reservation for dinner. Thank you Lawrence for a wonderful experience.

Be the first to ReplyThe Bombay Club is tucked away on Connecticut Ave.
in DC on a street with views towards Lafayette Square & The White House. Having somewhat good memories on a prior visit probably about 15 years ago, I made a reservation on OpenTable for dinner, but was sadly disappointed with the overall dining experience. The ambiance and decor is definitely a highlight, complete with live piano music which you'll probably never find playing at an Indian restaurant. Service (3/5) was friendly with plenty of wait staff, but dropped the ball with some customer service basics. We ordered a glass of wine, a beer, & a mango lassi for drinks, but we had to question the staff since they didn't come out for over 25 minutes. One party member ordered the mulligatawny soup (3.5/5), which came out first. A family member wanted to try some, so we asked for a small bowl for it so that it could be shared, but the waiter made a big fuss over it, and rather than be customer centric in providing a bowl, he offered to bring an additional spoon over. Very odd not to do right by the customer considering the $10 price tag on a bowl of soup. For meals, we ordered the saag, chicken makhani, & vegetarian thali. It wasn't until after the meals came out & we alerted the staff that we received the drinks we ordered. The mango lassi (2.5/5) was light in flavor without being overly sweet, but at $7, it was expensive and quite unmemorable. Despite ordering all meals with "Indian medium" spice, the food had virtually no flavor or kick to them. The chicken makhani (1.5/5) was a disappointment and quite possibly the worst preparation I've had of it in many years of dining. The gravy was flavorless and bland, and the chicken odd in texture with chewy pieces which we wound up spitting out. It came with a medium sized bowl of rice which really wasn't sufficient for the meal, and any additional rice cost $3. The saag (3/5) was probably the highlight of the meal, but still very average in comparison to other preparations. It seemed like the flavors were muted down to appease the palates of diners who can't handle any level of spice (necessary for proper flavor). The Bombay (vegetarian) thali (3.5/5) had a decent mix of items between dal makhani, a potato dish, a paneer dish, rice, & bread, but similarly lacked the spice levels to make it great. The naan (2.5/5) was small in portion & was very average tasting. While the restaurant decor & ambiance (4.5/5) was excellent, it simply didn't make up for the below average to average food. To be honest, we were all in agreement after the meal that we wouldn't return and would rather try another restaurant next time. A 2.5 star experience at best.
