The Lark Santa Barbara Reviews from The Last Year
The Lark has been written about in many different forms as
The Lark has been written about in many different forms as the spot to be in Santa Barbara. And I definitely say it's worth a visit! The ambience is moody and trendy, yet warm and sophisticated. The staff was super friendly and helpful! We got seated right away after we had booked a reservation online. They seated us in the adjacent bar/speakeasy restaurant connected to it, Pearl Social. The food overall was really delicious! Definitely a restaurant for the foodie, with creative and new flavors, but probably not the place you want to take for any picky eaters or people that don't like adventurous foods. Portions were a bit smaller than we would have liked, but we ordered six dishes for our party of five, and it was just enough food. Everything was truly delicious though! The big surprise was the pasta dish being one of the favorites of the night. The drinks and cocktails were excellent too! Overall, I definitely would recommend as the vibes are immaculate, the staff is friendly, and the changing menu is a great way to try some exceptional flavors. But the limited menu makes it harder to find something that everyone likes.

Had dinner here on a Saturday night and was glad to have made a reservation in advance because even at 8:30pm they were crowded and had a waitlist for walk ups. We got sat on the outside patio but thanks to the many fire pits and heaters between all tables we stayed cozy on a cold night! Chris greeted us with a bowl of fresh lemon poppyseed popcorn which was a super nice surprise (I'm used to some free bread but never super unique and crave worthy popcorn). We got drinks and a few appetizers and plates (more details below) to share for our party of 3 and left feeling full and happy. The service was amazing from all the staff but our waiter chris stood out with his friendliness, and he did a great job of spacing out our meal really well which made it more enjoyable. We noticed a lot of parties celebrating stuff around us (bachelorettes, birthdays, and even a wedding reception) which didn't surprise us since this place strikes a good balance of fancy, exciting and comfortable. There is general street parking around the Funk Zone area and a public lot closer to state street. Definitely try to snag a reservation and come here for your next meal if you can! Order below: Drinks -time and tide (rosemary heavy) -gold lust (a little more spirit forward than expected) -smuggler's punch (super refreshing and kind of floral) Snacks -brown butter cornbread (got one for an appetizer and one for dessert because it was so dang good) -whipped goat ricotta dip (reminded me of a classic lays and French onion dip but more fancy and sweet, and was easy to share with a group, we even ordered more yam chips on the side) -lemon brined and fried baby artichoke (the aioli was spicy but for those who don't like heat the artichokes themselves were seasoned really well and had lemon to add more zest) Small Plates -crispy Brussel sprouts (super good, the dates add a sweet touch to an otherwise tangy umami dish) -roasted tutti frutti sugar snap peas (not sure why they're called tutti frutti but they were herby and sweet)
What a great spot for brunch.
The espresso martinis are great and the burger was delicious. Great servers and service was on point!

Emiliano was our bartender and was incredible! We were in town to get married and he was so friendly and helpful and made us the most incredible espresso martini. The ambiance was lovely and perfect for our evening out. Thank you again for great service Emiliano!
Beautiful place located in Santa Barbara.
It is a pretty busy place and the waiting time might be even more than 20-30 minutes. It was our first time here. We actually liked the place and we thank the bartender for assisting us and others at the same time. (If I am not mistaken his name starts with G). Because it is a busy place, apparently your food will arrive pretty late. The bartender had to check on the order's status every 10 minutes. When our food arrived I noticed my food was very cold, meanwhile my boyfriend's dish was fresh and warm. I understand that my dish is not something should be warm , but it felt as it came out of fridge (even the toast). The desserts got delivered in the same way as well . The banana bread was cold, the pecan one was hot enough to burn mouth and also it was way too sweet... so if you're someone who does not enjoy sweets I wouldn't recommend it. The time that we spent on eating was not that long but we sat almost 2 hours waiting on each order to get delivered and served. Overall it was somehow a nice experience, but the waitings are really not that great.
Amazing meal and service! The fried chicken is the best
Amazing meal and service! The fried chicken is the best I've had. The pappardelle pasta...ridiculous. I just loved it all. The crudo with passion fruit aquachile blew my mind. And the snap pea dish?!? Never knew those things could be so exciting but wow. Just wow. AMAZING!!! Thanks chef!!!! And our wonderful server Jordan made the night even better! Can't wait to go back!
Unfortunately, deceptive and misleading service we endured
Unfortunately, deceptive and misleading service we endured here during Mother's Day. It took over an hour to get 1 oyster and after an hour and a half of asking for our food and them telling us "it'll be out" it never was. They finally told us that they had a waffle maker issue and reason why it was taking forever. It doesn't make sense as they told us it was coming out multiple times and it never did. They could have easily communicated us the issue hours back and we would've ordered another item as we had our toddler with us and needed to eat. My toddler was starving and we had to leave as our food was STILL not ready. Went to Lucky Penny next door and it was absolutely the best pizza we had.
Super fresh and innovative
One of the best dinners I’ve had this year! Great atmosphere, super service and the best part: delicious food! Everything we ordered was perfection: three fresh oysters for my friend;the olives, simple but MANY;the Brussels sprouts with garum was a revelation;the snap peas with feta and harissa was amazing; the pappardelle tender and fresh, lightly creamy…. Wish I lived here so I could return for more goodness. The atmosphere in the Funk Zone is fun and lively too!
Delicious deliciousness.
Cool place with lots of outdoor and indoor seating. Recommend reservations as on a Wednesday night it was packed. Server very attentive. The brown butter cornbread is a must! Pictured are a couple more delicious bites.
LOVE this place! Most delicious food, best service & nicest
LOVE this place! Most delicious food, best service & nicest inside & outside dining ambiance in Santa Barbara. Great variety of choices offered on the menu. We enjoyed the endive & citrus salad which was so refreshing. It has just enough shredded cheese and sliced kumquats on top of the salad. All dishes are conducive to sharing. The mussels are made with an addictively delicious garlicky & slightly spicy broths with little chunks of fennel & shallots. Our server (Kelly - he's the best!) brought additional sourdough bread for us to sop up the broth. The barbecue pork ribs were perfectly cooked, tasty and served with coleslaw made with a creamy dressing. For dessert we had the warm strawberry crisp served with ice cream and the dark chocolate pot de creme. Both were so good that we kept eating even though we were full. The French coffee press is a special treat and is offered in two size pots. Extensive wine list (we were offered a couple of sample tastes to help us decide). Nice cocktails list too. This restaurant is especially interesting as the building is in an old fish market and named after a train (The Lark) that used to travel between San Francisco & San Diego as a party train for folks. The restaurant also up-cycles old things: check out their silverware that is old and mismatched but still elegant and interesting. The door knobs on their front patio doors are made with old pool balls. Old 1920s urinals hang on the walls and are repurposed into planters. Old metal bathtubs are artful planters. And old tiled cook stove serves as a service station for dishes. An old catholic confession booth is repurposed as dining booths and storage for service ware. Part of an old train interior is made into dining booths and with old church pews as the benches to sit on. So cool. And old warehouse windows even with some missing panes line the outside wall of a dining area. Lovely outdoor dining patio and garden area, with pretty plants and plenty of heating lamps. Love this place. Great food, excellent service.
I don't understand the negative reviews.
We had a delightful dinner and was treated with top notch hospitality - despite having made a reservation for another night by mistake. Every course was excellent and service was friendly and informative (I like hearing about the ingredients and preparation). I felt the price was a good value- it's not inexpensive, but I was pleased with every aspect of the experience. Definitely will be back. Ignore the cranky reviews.
Good food and good service.
We sat in the shaded outdoor area . One of the better restaurants in Funk Zone.

The Lark has a charming outdoor eating area that welcomes diners with vertical greenery and outdoor heaters allowing ambiance and comfort to be in tact even on chilly evenings. The menu offers a variety of flavor combinations and after tasting many appetizers and main dishes, all are filled with unique ingredients and masterful flavor profiles. The Brussels sprouts were incredibly flavorful with chopped dates providing a sweet balance to the savory sauté or roasting oils and spices. The fried chicken was a huge winner as the crispy breading was perfection. The service was fantastic and they helped us decide the perfect amount of food to order and their suggestions were very helpful!

The Lark in Santa Barbara is hands down the best place to eat in town! Every time we go, the atmosphere just blows us away--so inviting and perfect for any special occasion or a romantic date night. Although it's not the cheapest option in town, every dish is worth it, making it my go-to spot for a fun night in SB. The service here is always top-notch; you feel taken care of from the moment you walk in. And the food? Absolutely impeccable. It doesn't matter what you pick from the menu, it's going to be delicious. My personal favorites are the brown butter cornbread and the hope ranch mussels--they're out of this world! Also, if you're here in the right season and looking for a cocktail, the Summerland is incredible. If you like Whiskey, it's the perfect drink to start off a memorable evening. I can't recommend The Lark enough. If you find yourself in Santa Barbara, make sure you give it a try--you won't regret it!

Came for brunch in the hipster "funk zone" area, at the fairly well-known restaurant, The Lark, for my first time. Service was friendly and great, although our food came out a bit slower than expected. Still, the hostess, waitress and bussers were all informative, fun and kind. The food was fantastic! My spouse loved the shakshuka, as it was powerfully flavorful with cast iron to have that roasted touch. We could've done without the green olives in it, but more for personal taste. My chicken and waffles were also excellent. The waffles were surprisingly light and crispy, with some heavy honey butter to kick you in the mouth. Fried chicken was good. We enjoyed our mimosa flight- particularly with the sparkling wine/champagne served in a separate chilled container to dole out for the flavors (pomegranate, grapefruit, orange and cranberry, iirc). All the other sides like the oyster and hangover fries were well-suited to curb any remaining appetites. Love the decor too, particularly in the booths. Very charming, and classy, while still chill. Easy to find this restaurant nestled with other shops, pastries and coffee. Definitely would come again!

Welcome to the most below average dining experience of your life... Showed up and seemed like no one was prepared to have us there. Staff was nice. Seemed like the hostess was doing more than she is paid for and entertained us while our waitress lagged. Super awkward experience all around server was okay. After reading all this and you still decide on coming here for dinner, get the brussel sprouts. They were the only thing that impressed us for our grand total of $240 (for 2 of us) So disappointing
We sat outside.
It is a great patio area and sheltered from any wind. The food was exceptional. It was the best meal we had in Santa Barbara. Our group started with several small plates, including beets, crudo and Brussels sprout's. For the main course we tried the fried chicken, pork ribs and fish. The fried chicken was fantastic. Everyone loved everything we ordered. The service was top notch as well. Highly recommend The Lark for a nice evening at an upscale but casual restaurant that epitomizes Santa Barbara.

The lark's ambiance was very cozy and vibey but that might have been my favorite thing about the experience. We got the beet salad, the catch of the day, and the brown butter corn bread. The cornbread was my favorite of the three but even that didn't blow me away. Service was fine, but we probably won't return just because there wasn't any standout dish for us.
This is such a great place in Santa Barbara.
We first visited a few years ago and loved the food, but didn't have outstanding service or a great table location. It still didn't ruin our experience. During this visit, we had a different yet equally bad seating location, but the service was perfect, and the food was delicious! We tried the cornbread (DO NOT MISS THIS ONE!), the Brussels Sprouts (yum!), the oysters (Skip this one, it was the only let-down of the night), the ribs (Great), and the Mussels (Ridiculously tasty!). We finished with a delicious matcha ice cream with macadamia nuts and coconut. Manager, Patricia, was so welcoming and made sure that we had a great experience, and we sincerely appreciated it. 100% recommended restaurant in Santa Barbara.

My wife and I made a reservation here to try out their coastal and Texas-inspired dining experience with shareable plates. The food comes out as it is prepped and the expectations were set high but fell a little bit flat towards the end. Time and Tide - A herby vodka cocktail with mellow citrus to start and a slight bitterness finish. Easy to sip on throughout the meal with not too strong flavors Crispy Brussel Sprouts - Incredibly savory first bite with umami and acid on the first bite! Brussels sprouts are cooked crispy in the outside yet tender on the inside. Tastes like soy sauce, lime, and a little bit of spicy kick. Handcut Pappardelle Pasta - A light carbonara sauce on firm pasta. Seasoned well and the citrus breadcrumbs add a nice depth of tang and crunch to each bite. 6 Hour Smoked Duroc Pork Spare Ribs - Taste and texture really varies on this one. I had an end piece that was tough and dry, but I also had a rib that was tender and fatty. Decent smokiness on the first bite with a mild kick at the end. Coleslaw was creamy and compliments the dish but nothing out of the ordinary. Service and advice on navigating the menu was easy thanks to our server Corina. I could've ordered the not as popular dishes but I wanted to try something different than the seafood items. Maybe I'll come back for those next time.
Highly recommended
Great food in a very nice atmosphere. Great service, also suitable for families. We were recommended to order several dishes to share and we went a bit overboard. Still ate everything because it was so good! Only the chocolate dessert was pretty unimaginative.
You’re having a lark
Great ambience with low ceilings and the vibe of a Swiss mountain lodge but where did the food go? I bet a deli in Downtown Mogadishu has a better selection and yet this place was packed. Obviously doesn’t hurt that it is in the tourist hotspot of The Funk Zone, but young Molly and I were so unimpressed that we ordered Brussels sprouts and a wedge salad and moved onto lusher pastures down the street. Hats off to the Italian maitre des who worked hard to get us seated, and maybe they can now set him a new task of fixing the menu.
Food tasty, but overall, will not go again.
The menu is super limited. The popcorn appetizer is excellent! We understand that the food is served "family style". We ordered corn bread, Brussel sprouts, and fried chicken to share. The brussels came out first (huge portion, way too much for 2 people), then the cornbread (perfect size for 2 to share), and 30 minutes later (no joke) the fried chicken came out. A surprise was that it was served with grits, which is new, and not advertised on the menu. All very good, but the timing was awkward, who wants to eat brussels and corn bread, then wait a half an hour for chicken? We were almost full by the time the chicken arrived. It really took away from our overall satisfaction of the meal. The atmosphere is cozy and comfortable, but the music is very irritating! boom beat dance music. Super pricey for the overall experience. We probably won't go again.
Let down for lunch
Lark was one of to go places when in Santa Barbara so when we heard it had now opened at lunchtimes, we gave it a much anticipated go! Yet our experience was that the lunch menu was extremely limited with limited to a good few egg dishes and a not so great fried chicken. Lunch was a total and utter let down.
Not worth the hype!!
We had heard good things about the Lark, but boy were we disappointed. Service was poor at best, bathrooms were dirty, out of order and not maintained and many areas of the restaurant need upkeep and regular maintenance. Maybe they've changed ownership or managers. THERE ARE BETTER CHOICES IN THE AREA! TOMAS, BOUCHON, LA QUITA are all similar priced and offer a much better experience.
Highly recommend
Loved everything we ordered at The Lark. Dishes are served family style so we shared quite a few options between four adults - everything was delicious. It was a perfect choice for dinner in Santa Barbara for our family (kids loved it too).
Good experience
PROS -good wine selection -delicious and creative food items -great service from Laurel (?) -good vibes -food reasonably priced except for oysters at $4 each and way too tiny -friendly front desk checkin CONS -very very hard to find parking -wines a bit high priced -bathrooms dirty
Nice casual spot
Loved this place! Fresh ingredients, inventive menu items, lovely location, and excellent service. Lots of shaded outdoor space, set off from main drag so limited noise. Highly recommend the Brussels sprouts, but honestly everything was great—fried chicken, pasta, oysters, cocktails….
Amazing Hanger steak
The bartenders were extremely professional and knowledgeable! We love eating at the bar just to have the friendly interaction with the bartenders. The ambience was great! We ordered a few apps and the hanger steak to share and it was incredible! The popcorn the hand out is so addicting! Must go if you are in Santa Barbra!!
Rather disappointing. Does not live up to reputation
Rather disappointing evening meal. Service was slow to start. Menu limited and a sharing dish experience which is hard if someone in the group has allergens. Food was underwhelming. Would not recommend for a family.
