We came to the '76 house for a small wedding lunch
We came to the '76 house for a small wedding lunch reception. We have been here before for parties. We had the party room on the left when you first walked in. The room was the perfect size for about 25 people. We were very private there and were able to get up and walk around as we pleased. They had bread plates on the table, but they never brought out bread. The salad was the best thing I ate, I liked how they cut up the vegetables for it. For an entree I had chicken francese which was just alright. For a child that was sitting nearby, they brought chicken fingers. I didn't have one, but they looked great. I had a french fry and that were delicious. For dessert, they had apple crumb. I do not like apples, so I did not eat any of it, but everyone said that it was outstanding and one of the best things they ate. Service was decent, they came and checked in multiple times. I thought the room was nice, the place had a lot of history, it is on the older side but that is part of the history of it.

We were visiting Tappan from Washington DC, where plenty of excellent restaurants are available to us, and the '76 House matched or topped all of them. We made definite plans to return to Tappan specifically for this restaurant. Its history, too, adds a fascinating element to the dining experience. Several members of our party have food allergies, and this was handled with tact and expertise, perfectly in all details. Our server, Laura, was knowledgeable, professional and personable--just wonderful. Highly recommended!

Absolutely fantastic! Food, service, drinks, entertainment, and building are stellar.
Be the first to ReplyWe had an early dinner during restaurant week.
We stuck with the prefix menu. I had the sirloin steak with blue cheese drizzled on top-it was fabulous. The rigatoni with bolognese sauce was the appetizer I chose-fantastic! I would definitely go back and have this as an entree! My dessert was the lemon tart-OMG another winner. My meal was so good. I definitely look forward to returning with my family. Also of note-there are a few historic sites in the neighborhood worth visiting while walking off your excellent meal! I highly recommend this restaurant.

If you want history setting this is the place - and awesome brunch. Service was great and something new to try and they now have events coming up - do not pass the opportunity
Be the first to ReplyService was excellent.
Setting was excellent. Food was good to very good. We had a birthday dinner here with the little ones. They sat us in the big room next to the fireplace, which was nice. Our server was very nice and personable, had good history and details to tell about the restaurant. I ordered the pork chop with sweet potatoes and sauteed vegetables. It was good and thick. A little hard and dry but that's the nature of pork chops. They overcook easily. Wife has the scallops, very good and cooked perfect. Little one had the burger, which came redder than I would have preferred. Flavor was good. George Washington has a favorite beer on tap, which was like a porter and very good. It was interesting to drink something historical like that. After said and done it was not an inexpensive dinner. The location is factored in the price. If I could do this review properly it would have been 3.5 stars.
Be the first to ReplyMy sister and I happened upon this place awhile back.
Stopped in for a cocktail one Sunday afternoon and we're amazed. A lovely jazz singer was performing. She was incredible!!! We decided to come back for dinner this past Saturday night. I can't say enough about the Service. Our Waiter, Joe, was incredible. His knowledge about the place was fascinating....my brother in law, being a history buff, as well as my sister and I were so impressed. Joe suggested menu items to us and I have to say he was dead on.....my scallops were done to perfection...my brother in laws steak AMAZING...my sisters Crab Cake was delicious...then to our surprise..there was a Brazilian Jazz guitarist performing, who was so incredible we stayed for dessert and Cafe. Nice Crowd, wonderful Ambiance....we will certainly be back. Thanks Joe for making our night so special!!! Hope to see you again soon!!!

..visiting was such a pleasure, we walked around the town and saw the history stories about President George Washington during his stay in the Midhudson region. There's a lot to see and enjoy at the 76 House in Tappan
Be the first to ReplyAlways excellent food and service.
Great for every day dining or special occasions. When music is playing best to sit in back room for easier conversation.

...did not disappoint. Great old historical building, full of charm. Extensive menu, do not pass up the table side prepared from scratch Caesar Salad. Creative entrees, served by our world class waiter, Joe. Throw in the live entertainment and you have a first class evening out.

The food, service and the entertainment was great. Orders came out for everyone at the same time. Love the history when your there you feel like you are back in time, you can ask questions the owner and staff know the history which my family loved. The staff is very friendly and the kitchen was able to to accommodate a request my husband ask for on his meal. My husband and I have been going for years and will continue to go.

I had dinner here and I am usually a frequent visitor with family or with my job. I was part of a dinner party with a pre-chosen menu. The restaurant was made aware someone in the family had food allergies and would be specific about them. Everything that was brought out, I asked what was in it or if it contained nuts.I had the Chinois Salad, but told them no cashews or ginger dressing because of my allergies. So they bring out a Chinois salad with balsamic dressing instead. As I'm eating it, I find cashews in the salad. I brought it to the attention of the waitress who said "oh I thought I got them all out". That made me stop. Food service industry should know how to serve food properly to those that need accommodations. Taking the nuts off the salad is still dangerous as its now cross-contaminated. My salad should have been prepared separately away from nuts or nut products...not thrown on a plate and the nuts picked out.Thank goodness the epi-pens didn't have to be used, but the anxiety over eating anything greatly increased. I ask for you to better train your restaurant staff - kitchen and wait staff about the dangers of this. They need to know how to handle food allergy preparation.

We found parking in the parking lot, we were quickly seated with reservations made, the service was great, and the food was delicious and filling, the atmosphere was very nice Lille going back in time with live jazz music playing. Our table felt like it was about to collapse unlike an old sturdy wooden tables made by hand to last forever.

easily the most unique dining experience in our area! where else can you get history lessons, ghost stories and an amazing meal all in one spot?! we had the pleasure of being served by joe & laura who are amazing friendly and so so kind. the owner, robert, was full of historical knowledge and took ample time to chat with us and the rest of the patrons which made the experience so special. an absolute must-try -- we are repeat customers and leave happy each and every time. thanks guys!!
Be the first to ReplyThis place was simply amazing.
Not only is the history fascinating, but the staff and owner were incredibly gracious. The owner gave us a tour of the place and even gifted our handicapped daughter a present to make her smile (she has cerebral palsy). We drove all the way from Virginia just to eat here, and we are so thankful we did. The food was superb and the atmosphere was just as we hoped. Wonderful experience from beginning to end! Make sure to read the history of this place before you go--it's remarkable
Be the first to ReplyPlace was really amazing.
Those thanksgiving egg rolls are one of the best things ever. I had a terrific chopped salad that I added salmon to. Amazing history and great food. On the pricey side but you get a museum experience along with your meal
Be the first to ReplyDon't ever go here.
Huge mistake and total embarrassment as host of special family occasion. Place is dirty and neglected. Staff awkward and unprofessional. Food is processed and clumsy. Nothing fresh. Charging NYC prices - just about fell off my chair when the bill arrived. Such a shame.
Be the first to ReplyWe enjoyed a very good meal.
..all 4 of us had different appetizers and main courses and agreed the food was very good. The live music was a welcome addition...not too loud and the song selection was perfect. Joe was an excellent waiter...very attentive and personable. food was hot and fresh. I would definitely recommend this restaurant....both for the food experience and the historical background.
