The Sovereign Washington Reviews from The Last Year
Had a cozy time here
It was such a cozy place to have a great conversations with friends over beer. We tried different brews that are perfect to our liking. Our server was so attentive. He asked us about our preferences and made great recommendations. He even offered us a way to customize some of the beer to match our preferences. We also tried some desserts which were also good. If you are looking for a chill place to be, I would definitely recommend The Sovereign but I’d suggest getting the seats on the second floor as it is less crowded and less noisy.
A great find
I'm really happy we discovered this interesting restaurant! Our server, Brooke, was so enthusiastic and helpful. There is a list of 50 beers on tap and she helped us find the right brews for us. We tried the Bitterballen as an appetizer and it was outstanding. Brooke was effusive in her comments about The Sovereign's approach of customizing recipes and making everything fresh on site, including the mustard! We can attest to the fact that it was all delicious. i ordered .mussels and my husband had the rabbit. We also shared a waffle dessert that was a great way to end the meal. The tables are all nicely spaced, so that we didn't feel crowded and the noise level was just a pleasant buzz. We would definitely go back if we were in DC.
What a let down
Really didn’t meet expectations. We lived in Belgium for five years and the food here did not hit the mark, at all. Best thing is the beer selection. Carbanade was not genuine and schnitzel was tough and tasteless. It is supposed to be fantastic but not worth it.
Nice change!
Very attentive staff. Lots of beers on offer, but cocktails and wines are also highly recommended. Onion soup is OK. Cheese platter is undersized.
Fun group outing
A really fun option for a group - they sat us at a large hightop adjacent the bar. Everything was on point - service, atmosphere, food and value. They were still offering a restaurant week menu - that had a lot of variety and beer pairings (which was a tremendous value). As others have noted - it's tucked off the main street down an alley but that adds to the charm and coziness of the interior on a cold night.
Memorable Family Evening
I had read reviews that mentioned Sovereign was difficult to find. Happily, our path to the restaurant was lit by luminaries, and we easily found our way from the main drag. The local bus is a bargain, ( use your metro card), and brought us from Arlington to Georgetown. We walked back. Appetizers of Bitterballen and champignon flat bread, accompanied by beer flights, were a great flavorful start to our Belgian and beer themed dinner. Our choices for entrees were rabbit, and mussels, mariniere and Belgian preparations. Excellent and generous portions, all open shells too. Good bread too.. The beer menu is extensive and very interesting. We stayed away from the sour beers, but among our group, tried a good sampling of the main categories of Roast, Dark, …Crisp…..etc. We eyed the intriguing specialty bottles, one allowed per table, but decided not this time! Fascinating beer menu , especially if you know your Belgian beers ! Wonderful dark, medieval, cellar style ambience makes the dining even more authentic. Our server knew the menu and the beers and stayed attentive. We all agreed this restaurant goes on our family hall of fame list for a memorable family evening.
Hidden in Georgetown
Great little Belgian restaurant in Georgetown. Nice variety and some unusual beers - at least to me. We shared appetizers and everyone enjoyed them. Nice size portions. the schnitzel was very good. Nice ambiance. A little out of the way up an alley so I wasn't sure where I was going at first.
Perfect for Belgian style beer lovers
This is a cool stylish bar situated in the Georgetown area of Washington. They offer a vast array of Belgian style beers and are happy to assist with advice and tips on what you may like. The interior is very smartly decorated and the staff are friendly if maybe a little confident. I love craft beers and especially American ones but I struggled to find something here with the emphasis on saison, wheat etc.. If that is your style of beer you will love this place !
