Tim Ho Wan - Waikiki Honolulu Reviews from The Last Year
Food tasty and quick.
Service was good and cute decor. Tasty dumplings and flavorful wonton soup
This is THE place for dim sum
We've done THW in Singapore, Hong Kong and Taipei, and this one's food is just as good. Especially, of course, the pork buns. The staff seemed bored and uninterested here; in the other cities they radiated that they were proud and happy to be there. Maybe it was a sad day or something. But such food! It's upstairs; best way to find it is to look up from the street, it's easy to spot from there.
Need to do better with Chicken feet dish
We tried this while in Waikiki beach after hearing it winning Michelin star. Nice environment and setting in Hawaiian village. We ordered chive and shrimp dumpling, chefs special chicken steam bun, wonton noodle, steam lettuce with oyster sauce, turnip cake and chicken feet. They are all good except the Chicken feet dish. I did not expect the Michelin star restaurant made an awful dish. We loved this dish as Asian but somehow the chicken feet were not fresh and not the soft cartilage texture we had that other place. overall a 4 stars
The dimmsum was cooked when ordered so it comes steaming
The dimmsum was cooked when ordered so it comes steaming hot. Wlthe shrimp chive dumplings, Har gau, shu mai, turnip cake and spare ribs with bean sauce were very tasty and fresh. We wish they had offered sauces like chili sauce, xo sauce, and mustard sauce. I wish they had the Taro balls. Wlthe staff were friendly and attentive. We were amazed that they were able to seat large families. There were only two of us and we got in right away.
Question for Yelp and Tim Ho Wan.
How is this restaurant listed with only 2-$$? I think when the restaurant opened way back when, but if you look at the prices showing and compare them to photos of the menu 5 months ago this should be at least a $$$$ restaurant. The special Kona Abalone cost in menu is almost double the cost shown in photos. Yelp whose responsibility is it to verify things are up to par. I love yelp and hope what I see is somewhat truthful and kept up dated. Yes since Covid many of our restaurants are having cost difficulties, but so is the public. Sorry but I tend to look over more $$ restaurants than the higher end restaurants as money is harder to come by. I'm sure Tim Ho Wan is worth every penny and more but I have to watch my budget too. We are so lucky that Oahu has excellent dim sum restaurants at a slightly lower prices. One day I will be able to treat myself and dine in at their beautiful restaurant. Mahalo!
Very disappointed!!! Food is not good at all for the
Very disappointed!!! Food is not good at all for the overpriced and limited menu, also poor service. It seems that Tim Ho Van restaurant chain is not consistent with their food preparation.
Excellent dim sum.
Loved the spring roll and har gow. Delicious and excellent service. Would go back again.
I love eating at the locations in Hong Kong unfortunately
I love eating at the locations in Hong Kong unfortunately the food here is not up to par at all. The famous baked BBQ pork buns are what they are known for at THW, however, the ones here are waaaaay too sweet! The taste is totally off. I'm not sure if this is the Hawaiian version but it's not good. Same with the beancurd rolls, the sauce is sweet. What gives? The siu mai dumplings are a lot smaller than in HK, like half the size. The good stuff were the custard lava sesame balls and the grilled eggplants with shrimp cake. But I was glad to try it as I know now you are just paying for the expensive Waikiki rent here. Service is good and I can hear the workers speaking Cantonese. It is located on the 3rd floor of the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center.
This is a gem in the Royal Hawaiian shopping center.
We were unfamiliar with the center, so took the long way to find it, but it was worth the walk! We had garlic shrimp, siu mai, short ribs, and the pork buns - of course! All deliciously prepared and a perfect dinner for 2. My friend is a pork bun person and had just done a search to see what there was. She'd never been to Oahu and this was my first time back in many years. This was THE place for pork buns! We each could have eaten an order (3) but restrained ourselves! The bun is flaky and the pork delicious - so so good! That's saying something from 2 women born and raised in San Francisco with every Asian flavor on the planet available to us! Staff was helpful and friendly and we had to tell our friends about it!
Disappointed.
Was hoping to try the Lunar New Year specials since the last time I came was two days before the specials started (the special started on 2/5), we came on 2/3 when the Royal Hawaii Center (where the restaurant is located) started hosting Lunar New Year events. That day (2/3) couple of the dishes were great but the rest was just okay. Which brings me to today. Was going to give it another try since today is the last day for Lunar New Year events at the Royal Hawaiian Center but come to find out they had already stopped having their specials. You would think it would make sense when people are coming for a Lunar New Year event that the Chinese restaurant would have something still yet.
If you're staying in Waikiki with no car and have a craving
If you're staying in Waikiki with no car and have a craving for dim sum, then this place will certainly suit your needs. While it meets all the standards of a good dim sum place, it's not necessarily any better than other local favorites. I do like the snow-capped char siu bao, a light sugary flakey covering on the bao that's offered in maybe only 2 other places in Honolulu. However, these and pretty much all the other dishes are smaller than elsewhere but at Waikiki prices. I do enjoy their selection of teas especially their oolong tea. Pictured are their shrimp dumplings, which are decent (dainty also comes to mind) and noodles (I included a tea cup for size reference - this may be "family style", but more for a family of one?) Waitstaff are very nice, enthusiastic to taking pics of you & your friends/family. They all work well together bringing dishes out as they become ready and clear empty dishes in stride. Overall an enjoyable experience good food but expect to order a bit more and pay more because you want to stay in Waikiki!
I love me some dim sum and this place had great dim sum.
And aside from the tasty food, the service was nice and friendly :)
Good Meal and Service
Good value for money. Service was good, food was tasty and they had the food to us pretty quickly. We sat in the outside area not inside and it fine.
Dim sum for dinner in Royal Hawaiian Center - some nice plates (har gao)
We wanted an early dinner while visiting Royal Hawaiian Center, and this was the right fit. Got a table outdoors with nice breeze, really enjoyed that over the AC. Got some simple dim sum plates: har gao being the best. The steamed bean curd with meat and vegetable was just average. The bean curd was a bit undercooked. Also got the teamed rice roll with BBQ pork, that was pretty delicious. The beef meatballs were just OK. Staff was efficient and friendly. It made a quick dinner. On the pricey side, but we do recognize it is Waikiki.
Chinese food in Waikiki
We always had lunch at Tim Ho Wan when visiting Waikiki (twice a year) That was our first time having dinner before Mother’s Day and we were kind of surprised that foods were not as good as before But the service was always very good
