18% mandatory gratuity + mediocre food + bad neighborhood
Do not go to Toki Underground. Bad neighborhood, mediocre food & 18% mandatory gratuity added. First, Toki Underground is located in a bad neighborhood. We were followed by a crazy man who kept yelling behind us as we were about to enter the restaurant. The food at Toki Underground is below average. The food is a 4 out of 10. The ramen is not authentic at all. The cooks spoke Spanish and not Japanese. The noodles are rubbery. The ramen broth of the Toki Class ramen lacks flavor, while the Kimchi Ramen broth is super salty. If you want good ramen try Ichiran (but I don't think Washington DC has Ichiran). Also, the hostess/waitress kept rushing us. She called us to see where we were at. Then she said we only have 1.5 hours to eat. When she gave our bill she said an automatic 18% gratuity was already added to the bill. This 18% was never mentioned when we made the reservation or on their website. This is illegal practice. The food, service and ambiance is below par. Toki Underground does not deserve a Michelin Gourmand designation.

The food and service were amazing. The flavors were great and it was a really unique blend of ingredients. The Toki Monster and crispy chicken thighs were awesome

Excellent service, fabulous food and enjoyable atmosphere. The food was everything I expected from the reputation and more.
Be the first to ReplyCould have been a contender!
These guys had great beer, great appetizers, and even great ramen flavor. But those were NOT ramen noodles! They were like yaki-soba noodles. So I don't know if they just ran out that night, so maybe cut them some slack? But they have to fix that.
Be the first to ReplyGreat spicy vegan ramen
We loved our dinner at Toki and had fun sitting at the bar... be sure to make a reservation as the place doesn't have a ton of seats. The spicy vegan ramen is great. Loved the broth and the spice level. I'd recommend getting extra tofu if you're looking for protein. My cocktail was great, and so was our prawn appetizer. He enjoyed his ramen with added pork belly.

I will have to say that I had such high expectations for this place given my love for tonkatsu ramen. I felt that with a Michelin star, this would be an easy slam dunk. So, the ramen just seem to fall short. It had just a hint of that fatty mouth feel of a good broth (when you know, you know) but just seemed to be lacking. It had good flavor but needed more. The egg was fantastic, noodles nice and springy, and the touch of red ginger great. I love the latel spoon that is provided. I also have never had shredded pork for the meat opposed to sliced pork which was a nice switch up. The sides we ordered in an effort try a little of all were the pickles- meh (pickled daikon, cucumbers, and cabbage). I could’ve done without as they didn’t add anything to the meal for the cost. We sampled the chicken thigh which was fantastic and maybe the highlight. The dipping sauce was great. And lastly, the gyoza/dumplings were probably the worst thing. They were doused in an oil that was over powering and simply not good. Sadly, I would not have spent the money to travel to and from the Wharf where we stayed and would’ve looked elsewhere. The interior is small and diverse. Recommend a reservation if you decide to go.
Be the first to ReplyTrendy, artistic and casual dining scene serving top notch food.
Perfect place to devour Bao buns before moving on to a ramen or noodle bowl. I ordered the wagyu beef ramen - the beef melts in your mouth and works perfectly with the broth and udon noodles. Be sure to book a table in advance and turn up hungry because you will want to try everything!

Very cool “speakeasy-esque” restaurant! My husband and I went for our anniversary and would recommend.
Be the first to ReplyStill delicious
It's been a few years since I last visited and happy to say the ramen and the dumplings were still delicious. Unfortunately, the place is still cramped, crowded, and uncomfortable - not an ideal setting in these plaguey times.

I found this true hole-in-the-wall on a recent trip to DC. I travel allot and always try to find foodie destinations like this place which was visited by DDD. I ordered a bowl with a added pork cheek protein. The broth had a complex and great depth of flavor. all ingredients worked very well. I talked to other patrons who stated this is the best Ramen in DC...I agree!
Be the first to ReplyI don’t get the excitement
A very crowded, loud, and tiny space (though quite stylish).
The ramen isn’t as good as I was expecting. I also tried the baos and eggplants and they were average.
The staff is very stressed about kicking customers out to make room for other customers, so be prepared to fit into your 1-1.5 hour spot :)
I don’t think I’ll go back.
Best Ramen in DC
Toki Underground has the best ramen in the city and was also the first one to open in DC. They have vegetarian and vegan options on the menu which I really appreciate. Cocktails are amazing and I'm so excited to drink Calpico when I go there. The art on the walls and all around you is incredible. Especially the hand-drawn sharpie wallpaper pattern in the bathroom. Toki looks like it was built by artists and not a cookie-cutter construction company. You can tell there is heart and soul in the small space. It is an intimate and hip atmosphere with a very cool urban ambiance and every meal I've had there has been absolutely delicious.
Be the first to ReplySqueeze into excellent ramen
Top 3 ramen places, with great flavor, excellent quality ingredients, appetizers are super, broccoli sprouts and gyozas, fun and delicious drinks. But be willing to squeeze and will be compensated.

Loved the food and unique atmosphere. Authentic flavors. This is a hot DC spot there you don’t want to miss.

My favorite ramen place. Great food, great drinks, great atmosphere. Stuff is always attentive. We had 4 adults and one kid, got a good seats and a good selection of meals, even for kid, he ate his kid’s ramen with a big pleaser. Highly recommend 👌🏼
Be the first to ReplyLoved The Soft Egg
Great Ramen, one of the best I have tried. Got the Toki Classic, it is very good. Loved the soft egg. Most Ramen, if they have egg it is hard, really like the yolk in the Ramen. Place is small, strongly suggest reservations - and don't be late.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing! Ramen as good as in Japan.
It is impossible to overstate just how good the ramen is here. It is as delicious as any ramen I had while in Japan. The place is tiny and a bit of a hole in the wall, so go expecting good food, not a quiet or elegant atmosphere. Don't try it at dinner without reservations. Reservations are recommended at lunch too, but if you are willing to wait, it seems like most get seated.
There is a limited bar with excellent drink specials. The appetizers are as good as the ramen.
Lunch date
