I surprised my girlfriend with dinner at Umi, to celebrate her getting a new job. We went on a Saturday at 5:30pm, as that was the only time they had at a reasonable hour for Friday/Saturday. I made the reservation like 3 weeks in advance, and there wasn't much to select from. I highly suggest booking at least a month in advance, as this place always gets super busy, especially on the weekends. Apart from that, everything was EXCELLENT. This was both of ours first time at Umi, so we wanted to make sure we tried a few things. We got the house salad with ginger dressing, rock shrimp tempura, brussels sprouts, spicy tuna w/ crispy rice, hurricane roll, Madai sashimi, Bincho-Maguro nigiri, and then this really cool breakable chocolate dessert. We also got two drinks each as well, I can't remember what they were, but they were excellent. We are huge fans of spicy tuna w/ crispy rice, so we had to get this off the menu. It tasted excellent. The rice was super crispy and the tuna was fresh. The rock shrimp tempura was also a huge hit. I liked how the pieces were bite sized, and you could eat them in one bite. We don't really like shrimp tempura when it's huge pieces and takes a few bites to eat them. The salad wasn't anything special, pretty standard. The brussels sprouts had a nice tangy-charred taste, we enjoyed them. The hurricane roll was recommended to us by our server, as it's pretty popular. It's a spicy salmon and cucumber roll topped w/ salmon, yellowtail, and avocado. It was SO GOOD. It came with 8 pieces, so perfect amount to share. I am not the biggest fan of sashimi and nigiri, but the ones we got were pretty good. They didn't taste super fishy. The two we got we had never tried before. I personally liked the Bincho-Maguro one more. The food was all so tasty and tasted pretty fresh. A 5/5 for food. The drinks we got were pretty good too. I can't remember which drinks we got, but they were quite good and refreshing. The service is decent. Our server did forget to check on us a few times, but we didn't mind. But I wished he had been a little more attentive. We wanted more water and it took a second for him to come and refill our glasses. The vibe is a upscale kind of feel. They do have a dress code which they enforce. But this is common, because this is a much nicer restaurant. Not saying you need to dress to the nines. But for guys, a shirt with buttons is recommended. My girlfriend wore a dress. For parking, you can drive and get a portion validated, or you can valet your car. We Ubered, since we were going to be drinking. The price of Umi is pretty expensive. This is definitely a special occasion type of restaurant. I wouldn't come here on the regular, but it's great for a birthday or a anniversary or a new job!!!Umi is one of Atlanta's finest. You definitely need to make the visit here at least once and immerse yourself in the entire experience. You won't be disappointed.*Side note: The entrance is pretty difficult to locate. We had a little trouble finding the entrance. If you get lost, definitely just ask someone or even pop into Garden Room and ask somebody that works there.*
