Fun with food
Enjoyed our outdoor visit to this foot spot which specializes in multi-national comfort with a twist. Enjoyed conventional classic cocktails with delectable food. I'd pass on the head of cauliflower, which was good not great. I took matzo ball soup to go. It was among my favorite things that I ate during this visit and was able to eat for days hot and cold.
Be the first to ReplyUnconventional, creative and delicious dessert
Stopped in for dessert and sat at the bar. Great service. One dessert was stellar - it looked like breakfast eggs and bacon and was full of flavor. The other dessert was a cheesecake that was good, yet very conventional and not that exciting.
Be the first to ReplyGreat pre tour dinner and drinks
Just had a pre tour dinner with my daughter and the food was great. My daughter had the alcohol free fruit punch and meatloaf (a lot of food) and it came with a side of mashed potatoes- all delicious. I had the pina colada and I haven’t had one that fresh with real coconut since I was in Puerto Rico ( I would come back for that alone). I had the sweet potato curry and it was fantastic. We also got the cornbread and it was good but beware the iron skillet they bring is hot- they didn’t warn me and I burned my finger - but when I come back in a few months I’m bringing the rest of our family here.

Superb cuisine! This is described as a diner adaptation but it definitely exceeds any expectations. It has a Mediterranean and middle eastern flair, with items like falafel that you can add to a broccoli /quinoa salad and cornbread with some paprika like butter atop. Yum. I didn't want the meal to end and wish I lived nearby to frequent!
Be the first to ReplyGreat food . Well worth a visit
This was a great recommendation from a member of the family. So good we came back twice. On the first night we sat outside and were served by Hugh who was an undoubted enthusiast for the menu. What was so good was that many of the mains could be added to by a variety of proteins making the menu adaptable for all tastes. The first night we both chose the Lebanese Fried Rice with chicken in my case and shrimp for my wife and it was spectacular. The other dishes we tried over the two nights, Bonsai Broccoli, Cuban Stew were great as were the desserts. The Hibiscus Citrus Cocktail is a must try! Sadly service on the second night was not so good and we left without dessert as it was slow. I'm not going to mention the server's name. Great value for money EXCEPT that at the bottom of the bill it says" 20% service charge will be added to your bill. 100% of this is used to pay our service team members' wages. Additional tips are not expected but always appreciated." I find this insulting. I am happy to tip for good service, although as a Brit where 10% is acceptable 20% is not, but in the case of the second server he did not deserve a tip as his service was poor, but put this way it almost suggests that tips ARE the wages. I hope this is not the case.

I stayed here three times during my stay in Washington DC. The food was truly delicious every time. That's why I kept coming back. The restaurant looks cozy on the inside. Two out of three times I was also helped and spoken to very kindly. Had nice conversations during breakfast at the bar. I would like to give 5 stars, but on my third visit I unfortunately had to deal with an overbearing bartender who could not say a kind word and who, without asking, shoved the bill under my nose, while I wanted to order a dessert and a drink. Hopefully this experience was an exception. Nevertheless, I would recommend going here.

Cool vibes, amazing unique breakfast - loaded biscuit and chicken & waffles - delicious mix of flavors. Service was great! Everything was 10/10. Still dreaming of the food 🤤

Food and cocktails was very good! And server Henry C was so nice, always checking on us if everything was good and the wait for the food was short!
Be the first to ReplyGreat experience. Outstanding service
Excellent meal. The Unconventional Diner was firing on all cylinders the night we went. The service was exemplary, drinks were outstanding and the food was fantastic. What a diverse, friendly crowd of people. Lovely watching the crowd of guests. Being pampered by the outstanding staff.

Be the first to ReplyDelicious interpretations of classic dishes
This was our first time at Unconventional Diner and we enjoyed it. I had the shrimp and grits, my daughter had the Cubano and my friend had the matzo ball soup. My shrimp and grits was very tasty. It's a Carribean version with a somewhat sweet, tangy sauce and grilled pineapple. The grits were creamy and the dish was full of flavor. I thought the portion was a bit small but I was very hungry. My friend enjoyed the soup and my daughter also liked her Cubano.

Great Breakfast stop whilst in DC. We searched the internet looking for a place to eat but was recommended this place by our hotel staff. It opens at 9am and we were there early. The staff are engaging and the food is cooked to a high standard. It’s not cheap but as a treat it was worth it. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone. I had the loaded breakfast biscuits and my wife had the buttermilk pancakes both of which were awesome.

I went there for a business dinner with four others. I knew it was going to be special because the locals raved about it. When you walk in, you sense the buzz. When the menu opens, the choices are wild and imaginative. I think I liked the Moroccan Taquitos and the Caribe Grits the best.

Be the first to ReplyNot worth a detour
The place is not deafening. The servers were too busy. The choices on the brunch menu were not very appealing. I had thought we would get a lunch menu on a Monday. The bacon jam fora biscuit is delish.
Be the first to Replywell-located, vegetable-forward, delicious
This restaurant, conveniently located, offers an exceptional veg-forward menu with many creative and delicious options. Kale nachos are particularly outstanding; we also enjoyed shiitake spring rolls and stir-fried okra and broccolini. Service is excellent. We would return anytime we find ourselves in DC.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing breakfast
Decided to try this for breakfast and the meal is truly unconventional. Unconventional Diner is a tidy and clean place with an extensive brunch menu. Tried the French Dip Poutine and it is a hearty, fulfilling option. Beef is juicy and tender and the jus-immersed fries is simply decadent. Service is warm and price just like typical diners. No wonder it gets the Michelin.

Great options for all including gluten free and vegan. Eclectic and fun menu. Nice place to catch a better meal - like a casual date.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Comfort Food
All our choices that rainy evening were just what we were hoping. Excellent comfort food and so much more! Pot Pie Poppers were amazing! Corn Bread fantastic. Chicken Dinner so good! Mashed potatoes with morel gravy perfect. The service was wonderful. From the young man that filled out water, our server, the person that stopped to clear some dishes, even those that brought out our dinner were polite and made you feel that this was a special place to sit, eat, and visit with friends and family. Prices were exceptionally reasonable when compared to the service, the flavor and the amount of food served! We arrived at this diner around 5:15 PM. The place was moderately busy. By the time we left, around 6:20, the place was filling up quickly. Visiting from out of town, or you want to experience that feeling of a home cooked dinner with friends and family again, come here!

On vacation in DC and decided to try this place out based on reviews. Loved the chicken parm florentine dish…3 of us got it! Meatloaf also great. Delicious Brussel sprouts as a side dish enjoyed by the whole table. Appetizer of corn muffins with habanero butter and honey crystals was to die for! Sat outside and got a good people watching spot. Our waiter was delightful and helpful with menu suggestions. Would definitely go back.

The menu has great variety for both food and drinks. We visited for dinner, got the chicken pot pie poppers and burgers. Food was delicious. Would recommend to anyone visiting DC. Make reservations in advance as tables will likely be limited or not available otherwise.
Be the first to ReplyBubbly Service
Milton, our server made our dinner exceptional. His enthusiasm was more bubbly than my cava. He was patient with our indecisiveness and professionally polite.
We chose this restaurant as it was fairly close to our hotel and had positive reviews. We were not disappointed.
We had the broccolini okra “shareable” dish as an appetizer and the black ink pasta with crab and duck as entrees. Vanilla ice cream was dessert. All we’re tasty and we’ll prepared. The Oregon Pinot Noir paired well.
The only disappointment was the coffee. No espresso and the coffee was old.
Creative & Delicious--but desserts are underwhelming.
For the most part the food is delicious, creative and a great balance of comfort and flavor. As a trained cook and foodie I had high expectations knowing the reputation of the chef of this restaurant, and for the most part the food doesn't disappoint. But it's frustrating when there is a lack of consistency in quality. The ice creams, for example, while homemade, were icy and claggy in consistency. The vanilla had an off flavor like it had freezer burn. This was a let down, for sure. I am less inclined to go back when I can depend on the entire meal to be great. Having said that, the service here is wonderful and the woman who helped us was quick to replace our dessert when we found a piece of broken rubber inside the brownie.

Be the first to ReplyDelicious, innovative diner cuisine
We had a wonderful meal here last night. Service was attentive and friendly. Cocktails were good, and we enjoyed our shared small plates, including kale nachos, shiitake spring rolls, Caesar salad, and cauliflower appetizer. Many of the flavors were unexpected but they were all delicious. We also had a really good ice cream sandwich for dessert. We enjoyed the meal so much we made a reservation to return tonight with our nephew. We are looking forward to trying other menu items.
