Sad surprise
We ask 4 different plates . Only the dosa was not bad . What's going on? Still effects of the pandemic???
Be the first to ReplyWe went to Berkeley Bowl and then to this place for lunch
It is very popular but the service is quick. We ordered our food and had a 10 Mins wait time. Poori Aloo, Dosa, Samosa all were great.

What to Order: 100% do not leave without ordering their Pani Puri - it's the best I've had in California. They are creamy, crunchy, spicy and sweet and every time we introduce someone to Vik's, this is always the reigning favorite. Vik's also has some really delicious curries but they rotate every few days so I can't recommend a consistent favorite - if you see their yellow fish curry, that is the one we love the most. Their other curries have been okay but not as good as the pani puri and yellow fish curry. We always get a young coconut too, which helps cool down some of the spiciness of the food. Tips: Vik's is a cafeteria style restaurant where you order at the front and your food gets called out when it is ready and you go over to the counter and pick it up. They also have a great Indian market attached to the front of the restaurant so leave some time to browse around before you go! It's also a good budget meal and it's great for a date or with a group of friends where you can split and taste multiple things! We always leave very happy and satisfied.

I've been to Vik's a couple of times. It's always been very tasty and delicious. The photos are from a lunch I had in May 2022. And then from a dinner the day before Thanksgiving 2021 that could have gone wrong! After ordering, they called to tell us that they closed before we were to pick up our order. Since we had ordered a couple of individual meals, they offered to package it like they would family dinners! Great! We ended up getting more food than we thought. It was all very delicious. When I'm in Berkeley, I always stop there to buy Indian staples from the shop.

My son is a recent transplant to the Bay area. A work associate of his recommended Vik's for authentic Indian food. We were looking to be a little adventurous when in town visiting him a couple of weeks ago and went there. The food was well prepared, delicious, varied, very reasonably priced. It is very casual, and customers seat themselves at picnic benches and pick up the food when called. They could be a little more on top of cleaning the tables, because you bus them yourselves. I now consider myself introduced to Indian food, and I'm coming back.

Vik's has some of the best Indian food in the East Bay. Everything we've gotten has been great - no complaints. The food is flavorful and delicious. The attached store is great too for all sorts of Indian ingredients and brands (tea, spices, lentils, snacks, etc). Most recently we got samosas, tandoori chicken, fish stew, uttapam, and veg pakoras. Delicious!

Customer service and food quality
I placed masala dosa and lunch special order over the phone on Sunday, November 14, 2021, noon. I went for food pickup at the restaurant. As soon as I entered the restaurant, a small Indian guy yelled at me for not wearing a face musk. I told him that I forget the mask in my car. I will wear it if you provide one. The guy told me in very loud voice, "You have not read the sign at the door for face covering; and go out side and come back with the mask." I told him that I came just to pickup the food and leave. The guy was really very loud and rude. A few customer were watching us. I thought he might punch me. I asked him not to give the food and refund the money. Still he was angry but refunded the money. I told him that I am sorry and will never come back at your restaurant ever again. He replied, " I don't care."
I have been eating lunch and snacks at the restaurant for last 10-12 years. I have noticed the quality and quantity of food have deteriorated much.
Pretty terrible lunch
We ordered the Daily Veg Thali with Kofta and a dosa. The kofta didn't taste anything like kofta. The dosa chutneys were sour - a sign that it was not fresh ( in fact they gave a tiny bit) and the sambar was equally bad. The potato bhaji was ok at the best.
Perhaps this place is great for chaats but not dosas or vegetarian thalis.
popular indian street chaat mecca ...quality has steadily declined
I first ate at Vik's when all they served were samosas or cholle bhature for $2....since they are now a behemoth retail and restaurant operation...however the quality and taste have steadily been declining...till the point that I am no longer interested in visiting

Where I live all the Indian restaurants serve, aside from vindaloos, basically Punjabi style dishes. It's always a special treat to find a place serving the southern specialties. The dosai here are excellent and very ample, and the sambar served with them is also first class. If I could fault anything, it would be that the coconut chutney was not as hot as I expected -- but this would be a plus for most whose palate is sensitive to hot peppers. I also loved the market.

Being starved for decent Indian food in the Boston area, we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of food at Vik's. It a clean, efficient counter service. We tried the vegetarian thali and the pani puri and both were excellent. The accompanying store was also clean and well laid out. Worth a visit for tourists and repeated visits for locals.

I came here by myself for dinner after work on a Friday night. They have a grocery store in the front and a rather large restaurant in the back. You order at the counter and then they call your name to pick it up. They had a good selection of the normal Indian foods. I had chicken biriyani and it was good. They had quite a selection of desserts so if you love Indian desserts that's a good spot for you. I got one that was green and white with pistachios but it was crazy sugar sweet. Too much for me. I also got a mango lassi that was excellent.

We are coming here for atleast two decades. The quality of food and service is hard to beat. It is not easy to find a sitting place in peak hours. I would avoid peak hours.

It's like an Indian cafeteria right down to the partitioned trays. Food was good and spicy. A friend and I shared an entree, samosas, and chaat. It looked like an enormous amount of food and I am ashamed to say that we ate it all. It was delicious too. There is no ambiance, but the food is good and quick.

A lady friend asks me to meet her at this restaurant. By the way they have a nice parking lot and parking in front and sides. We entered in through the store and went in a maze to get to teh restaurant! Found! Nice and big, tables and chairs, inside a area sort of closed but you eat where you want! You order at th counter and pick up when they call your name! Sort of self service, bacause at the end ( when you finish eating) you have to bus your plate, waste and drinks. Oh well that is Berkeley! The food was terrific! I invite you to check it out! I really enjoyed my meal and I am sure if you head out over there you will like it as much as I did! Don't hesitate go try it, you just might like it!
