We were staying in a friends apartment for the weekend, across the street from the Emirates Stadium where a certain London football team resides, and this lovely restaurant was recommended to us. It's quite hip and trendy but thats okay, there was quite a broad selection of punters in there, all thrown in together, sharing tables that had chalk lines separating the seats with the guests names written on the table. I think the next time I come here I'm going to give them a false name like Tarquin or Sausageface or something silly. Anyway, seating arrangements aside, lets move on to the important stuff. The menu is also written in chalk on a blackboard on the wall, which for those of a certain age and in quite subdued lighting could possibly be an issue although our waiter was very helpful in reading through it with us and was more than willing to answer any questions we had. It's a sharing menu, as is quite common these days, sort of a tapas kind of thing where you're given small but very tasty dishes to tuck into, you'll need at least six of them for two people. First up was a fried sprat on pork fat toast that was small but packed a flavourful punch, it was delicious and a great way to begin proceedings. Next was Mussel escobeche on a small slice of bread with very delicate pickled onions, again, tiny but superb flavours, by the time this one was over I was very pleased with myself for picking such a good restaurant on such a cold and miserable evening! Lamb sweetbreads, cooked to perfection with spinach and about a pint of tarragon butter, this was the highlight for me, mouthwateringly fabulous. Spinach and tarragon was a new one for me, brilliant. Hake, which I love, again perfectly cooked with pureed celariac, celery and fennel. It was about this time that it occurred to me that the chefs here, like all good chefs everywhere, are not in the least bit afraid of butter and may god bless them for it. Such a great choice of veg to go with the beautiful fish, so tasty. Last and I'm sorry to say, least, was Baked cuttlefish with fideo pasta and aioli. Unlike everything else we had, this particular dish sounded like a great idea but was poorly executed. The pasta was baked with the ink and barely a mouthful of cuttlefish with a dollop of way too thick aioli. The flavour wasn't bad to be fair to the chef but it wasn't great and for £23 it should have been mindblowing. However, that being said we had some wonderful food, some wonderful wine and a five minute walk home, so I'd call that a winner.
