Excellent dining experience
Our group of 6 went to celebrate a birthday, and each of us completely loved the dishes, the ambience, and the service. The food was very creative and absolutely delicious. The service was not pretentious but still solicitous. It was casual enough that we felt like we were eating in someone's dining room, but the service and quality were of a restaurant that would have typically cost 3-4 times the price. We all want to return to try out a different menu, since it changes weekly. (Also, we had dietary restrictions -- no meat or fowl or shellfish -- and they accommodated them graciously and deliciously.)
Be the first to ReplyNice Set Dinner
The four of us came for a Saturday night dinner. The exterior is very non-descript and no signs except on the door. The interior is modern and large bar area. Fantastic service. I really like the set dinner. There is no choice so you have to be flexible on the entrees. There's a few little extra's aside from the items on the menu. They sent us off with some good bakery too!
Be the first to ReplySuperb. A crown for the city. Wine menu way too pricey.
PROs: secluded enough to give you the feel of a city-center escape. Very nice interior lights. Friendly sevice. Anything that is served is surprising, intriguing. Yes, you eat enough.
CONs: This sensational menu is definitely worth its fee, but I left disappointed for the wine-tasting cost (the double of one person's menu) - my bad, I didn't check it.
CONCLUSIONS: An absolute gem for CHICAGO. Somthing many will talk about and remember.
All but dessert
We had the tasting menu last Saturday night, The restaurant is really cool, with friendly staff and a creative decor. The food was tasty and had some really unique flavors. My only complaint was the dessert was a rum baba cake and it was too rummy. I asked the server beforehand and she said it was cooked so the rum burned off, but the flavor was overwhelming. The restaurant should be considerate of customers who may not drink for medical or recovery reasons and offer an alternative dessert that doesn't taste like a shot of rum! Otherwise, the food was good and we'd got back.

We went in pretty early one night for a drink at the bar.
Interior was really chic and inviting. Bartender was instantly friendly and chatted us up just the right amount as we enjoyed some wines with friends.
Wine list was cool--not so weird as to be inaccessible, but some unusual choices, including some from around the area. We had a great sparkling from upstate NY and a couple of other glasses that we enjoyed.
Cool vibe, good service--can't wait to return for the full experience
Best new place for unique food pairings
Best new place for unique food pairings. We have eaten a lot of places and this is NEW, with different tastes. The small butternut was my favorite. A Chicago version of Dan Barber’s Blue Hill in NY, at a more reasonable cost. Wines were offered from smaller vineyards you may not have heard from.... excellent. All in sll, not to be missed.

Get a reservationIt is tasting menu format with 4 listed courses at $65 (when we went), with a few "free" items not listed included. While certainly not cheap, I thought it was great value for money considering what you would spend for similar in the West Loop or River North.
The cooking is absolutely top-notch. One course we had was Celeraic with Hazelnuts and Brown Butter. Super tasty. I could have sworn it was pasta. Other stand-outs were the Borscht (not on menu) and the Carolina Gold Rice Pudding (fabulous). The only real miss for me was the wagyu. Mine was very, very, very rare which I'm not opposed to, but it also lacked any real flavor and ended up being really chewy and tough to eat.
Where I think they are falling a bit short is in the service and general ambiance. The place is very small, tables are packed in, and noise level is really high. Maybe this says more about me, than anything else but the bathrooms are marked "Toilet & Urinal" and "Toilet & Toilet." While walking out I came face to face with someone of the opposite (?) gender which made for a somewhat awkward moment for both of us.
Service is very friendly, but lacking polish. It's small things like empty wine glasses sitting on the table, courses "dropped" versus placed, and limited knowledge of the menu preparations. Again, small stuff.
I would definitely go back, assuming I can get a reservation as this place seems like it's going to go big.
A fun place for a reasonable tasting menu.
I thoroughly enjoyed this place. The food was excellent though non of the tastes were exceptional. When we reserved we requested alternatives in case the tasting menu included sweet breads -- non of our party was that adventurous. But the menu when we went was duck and trout, so no problem. The extra tastes, not on the menu, were indeed a real treat. Service hit the perfect balance between attentiveness and being unobtrusive. The place could have been a little quieter. They have wonderful felt shades on the lights, to help quiet things; but the walls were bare, adding to the noise level.

Cute place, but too bright. We went for dinner, and two of us ordered the regular tasting menu, while one had the pescatarian menu (only 1 course was different). The server brought out some finger food first (not listed on the menu). We started with green apple slices paired with a soft cheese (good). Then came the fried cardoon (artichoke stalks) with a sauce on the side, also pretty good. Next was a mushroom broth, which was very tasty. The bread that came with it was served warm and was so soft and delicious (the serve said it's made at a bakery in Logan Square). The first course from the menu was pumpkin velouté with cream and mushrooms. That was my favorite part of the meal - thick, rich and surprisingly filling. After that, we had the scallops (served with lime and orange). My friends liked them, but I did not (not a fan of raw scallops). The steak came next, which was okay. Before it came out, the server informed us that the chef prepares it medium rare, and asked if that was okay with us. I asked for medium, and she said there are no substitutions/they don't do that. I guess I could have had the mushroom course instead (which was on the pescatarian menu), but I just said that was fine. The steak was okay. The dessert was a lemon curd, which I thought was pretty good. Wine list was a little different - some from Michigan, New York, California. Service was good - attentive.
Be the first to ReplyToo adventurous and pricey
Prix fixe menu we knew we had to trust. But sweetbreads, really? Lump in throat. No! We tried. Lesson learned. Manhattan cocktail excellent. Also soup course, bread, and one appetizer great. Weird- shishito peppers, cheese course odd, sorbet bitter, and 1 of 4 wine pairings weird. Super pricey super disappointing.
Be the first to ReplyA Gem From the Owners of Parachute
Assuming you're comfortable with the notion of a "chef's menu" that changes nightly, Wherewithall is a great addition to the ever-strong Chicago food scene. Great beverage program: On the wine list, lots of old world varietals from biodynamic, niche North American producers. Servers were attentive. The wife/husband team at Parachute have done it again!

The food was delicious. I absolutely loved the trout, and I am usually not much of a fish lover. The steak was also delicious. The food was simple and elegant and made in a very creative way. Get the wine pairing. We loved the Canadian white that they served. It paired perfectly. We cannot wait to return.
