OK to try, but dont come in a hurry
Quality of food was so-so, really on the salty side. But the menu variety is good and the service was relatively good. Portions are average. Conveniently located and worth trying again. Elderly patrons should avoid as it's a steep climb up the stairs.

DANGER: STAY AWAY FROM THIS RESTAURANT Tipping culture in America is fine, however when a business encourages it's waiters to chase after diners and demand higher tips, this is probably the worst experience I've ever had. Pay your waiters better and stop demanding them to go rudely ask diners for a higher tip. I've never been chased out of a restaurant by an aggressive waiter, been told culturally, he expects a higher tip. Incredibly offensive and I would never recommend anyone come here unless you want to see a waiter shame themselves in believing they deserve a higher tip.
Be the first to ReplyJapanese Yakitori
Most of the servers are Japanese and they were very friendly. They offer many kind of Yakitori as well as other meats and vegetables on a bamboo sticks. It was located at a great location, 55th, and the price was reasonable. Since this is a small restaurant upstairs, you should have a reservation.
Be the first to ReplyGet the skirt steak skewer and green tea affogato
Tl;dr - try whatever skewers you want to. Not all of them will be great but you will have a great time.
I love yakitori, so I was super excited when my hubby said he was bringing me here to celebrate our one-year wedding anniversary. We were on the fence if we wanted to go all the way out to the city or not but when we decided that we did want to go, we were lucky to be able to make 7:30 PM ressos for the same (Saturday) night.
Here is everything we ordered:
Lamb chop - this was my least favorite. It tasted fishy - I'm thinking probably because they might have grilled either shrimp or scallop beforehand. Too bad, because this could have been good.
Tsukune (chicken meatball) - they ran out of the shishito stuffed with chicken meatball, which was what we wanted so we ended up getting this. It wasn't bad - pretty standard. Probably not something I'd get again now that I've tried it once.
Kalbi (short rib) - again, pretty standard - nothing special. Less chewy than kalbi can be
Kawa (chicken skin) - we loved this. In fact, since my husband has been here before and tried this, and knew I would love it too, he ordered four for us right from the start, and it was amazing. But it's pretty rich. I would say one is good, one and a half would be perfect, two is doable, and anymore than that is too much
Combo Mambo (eel/shrimp/scallop) - skip this. I don't like eel but I was hoping that the shrimp and scallop would be good but it was kind of disappointing
Wagyu - OK, you can't go wrong with wagyu. If you're willing to pay the price, it's worth it ($10/skewer) for a splurge
Harami (skirt steak) - one of our favorites. This was so tender and usually, skirt steak can be a hit or miss. This was almost half the price of the wagyu and honestly, we liked it just as much, if not better. HIGHLY recommend
Momo (chicken thigh) - another goodie. Not as extravagant as its other neighbors on the menu, but a great, perfectly cooked addition to the meal, though not a highlight
Liver - very rich, so we got one to share (as opposed to at least two of everything else) and I'm happy we got to try it, but also happy we only got one. Liver isn't for everyone. It is for me but even I felt like one whole skewer would have been too much
I appreciate that they use little to no salt when grilling, so that you can adjust it to your own taste. They have these cute little salt/pepper/chili shakers at the table to make the skewers perfect for you.
For drinks, I had the Fresh Fruit Sour (shochu + soda) - I picked lemon soda, and he had the Calpico Sour (shochu + Calpico soda). We weren't fans of either of them and actually ended up just getting some draft Asahi, which is what we should have gotten to begin with. Nothing beats a freshly poured draft beer, especially when you're eating yakitori.
For dessert, we had the green tea affogato and it was amazing. I'm not even a dessert person but I probably could have eaten one of these by myself, even after all the skewers we had. It had a little bit of red bean, which was the perfect amount for us because he likes red bean but I don't - and the green tea was perfect. It was quality matcha and not the ones you'd find at Trader Joe's.
Service was amazing, They weren't overbearing, yet somehow, every time we tried to look around to order something else/needed something, someone just magically appeared. I also want to add that they had plastic partitions per two patrons (at least by the bar where we sat), so it made us feel safer dining during Covid times.
Will definitely come back, especially now that we know which skewers we like.
really good yakitori here
full covid safety in place here-except maybe 6-foot option. tight quartered upstairs yakitori spot. Reminiscent of similar places Iโve seen photos of in Tokyo. Opens at 5:30 and those wanting to eat early or couldnโt get a reservation were lined up outside the front door and down the stairs waiting for them to open. The seating process appeared to be based on how many in your party and how soon the reservations of approximately the same size were scheduled. Those of us arriving at opening were informed of how long we could occupy the table for our meal. One hour no problem for the two of us. Started with our usual choice, edamame, which were done very well with just the right amount of salt. Our yakitori choices were as follows:
Negima-Chicken breast with scallions-best of the bunch. Enjoyed 2
Bacon wrapped asparagus-also delicious cooked perfectly
Negi Pon-pork with scallions & ponzu-this was very good ordered 3 of these
Harami-skirt steak-light on flavor except beef
Shitake Mushroom with sea salt-boring. Barely cooked. Needed sauce to enjoy
Unagi-eel-just for me as wife wonโt eat. Very well executed here.
Friendly servers kept up with our desire for more without being intrusive. They know how to keep things moving but not disturb your dining enjoyment. That plus very good food adds up to a place Iโd visit again. Recommended.
Food is bad.
worst food ever. Service is good, but food is worst ever. I try several Japanese food. This place is worst one. I never recommended .

This little restaurant really does feel like you are in japan. It's lovely. We got on the waiting list online and our table was ready when we arrived. The skewers were a bit hit or miss. The hearts and gizzards were great but the chicken wasn't. The mushroom side dish and kimchi were excellent. The shishito and mushroom skewers were very good. They were out of the lamb so we may have to try again.
Be the first to ReplyWe always try to stop here
We always try to stop here for dinner on our trips to NYC. The Yakitori was excellent as usual. Understand that there is an initial charge for the tea (although many Japanese restaurants donโt charge) but to charge $5 for the refill seems a bit over the top. They should rethink that policy.
Be the first to ReplyUnbelievable yakotori
Seriously check this place out. It is just like the izakaya (bar) in Japan. They have house-made plum wine (umeshu) and the chicken meatball brought back memories of little restaurants in Kyoto for me. Everything was top notch quality, flavorful, and the staff was amazing. Oishi! Delicious!

Tiny, very Japanese, restaurant. You will feel like you are in Japan. Entrance at the top of a narrow flight of stairs.
The Mizore Gake goes deliciously well with sake! Small grilled meat plates, yakitori and and amazing lamb chop are fun to share. Be adventurous and try the beef tongue! Wonderful service.
Average at best
We had very high expectations for this place. The ambiance is nice. Close to what you might find in Japan. The food however fell short. Most of our grilled items were just ok. None of them stood out.
